Creasey seeks re-election to Anderson County Commission, District 7

Oak Ridge resident Jerry Creasey is seeking re-election to the Seventh District seat on the Anderson County Commission in the county general election on Thursday, August 2.

Creasey grew up in High Point, North Carolina, where he attended High Point College and graduated from Guildford Technical Institute in Electronics Technology following his four years of service with the United States Air Force as a B-47 Radar and Weapons In-flight Trouble Shooter, a press release said. Coming to Oak Ridge in 1968 to work at the Y-12 plant, Creasey retired as radio systems manager after 27 years of service. He has since been involved with his wife’s small telecommunications business.

Creasey has served as chairman of the Anderson County Commission, as well as chairman of the Legislative, ADA Oversight, Computer, Legislative, and the Veterans Committees. He is presently serving on the ADA Oversight, Broadband, and Budget committees. [Read more…]

Bouchard seeks election to Anderson County Commission District 7

Jimmy Bouchard is seeking election to the Anderson County Commission to represent District 7, which covers the Glenwood, Pine Valley, and Highland View precincts, a press release said.

In a press release, Bouchard said he is a local small business owner of In & Out Maintenance, a renovation and construction company.

“I am a longtime member of the community where my wife and I are happy to be raising a family,” Bouchard said. “I am married to my best friend, Kelsie, and have two boys Kolton, age six and a rising first-grader at Glenwood Elementary, and Kaison who will be turning two in August. We are also very excited and happy to be welcoming our third boy later this fall. I am an extremely hard-working father and take pride in all my efforts, and I want to work hard for all the families in District 7.” [Read more…]

State grant will help with national park signs, waterfront improvements

A state grant of more than $50,000 that was announced Tuesday will help create interpretive signs for historic sites in Oak Ridge that are related to the Manhattan Project National Historical Park and improve the waterfront for events such as rowing, cycling, and festivals, officials said.

The $56,250 Tourism Enhancement Grant, part of the third round of grants, was announced Tuesday at the Oak Ridge Municipal Building. A few Oak Ridge officials attended, and so did representatives of the Tennessee Department of Tourism Development and Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.

“Through this grant, the City of Oak Ridge, in partnership with Explore Oak Ridge, will receive funds to support projects that improve some of the city’s key tourist attractions,” a press release said.

Marc DeRose, president of Explore Oak Ridge, said there are two parts to the grant. One is to enhance the city’s component of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. The grant funding could be used to create interpretive signs at historic places like the Guest House and Chapel on the Hill. The interpretive signs will be accessible and include pictures and content, DeRose said. [Read more…]

Catherine Denenberg receives endorsement from Tom Beehan, Kay Brookshire

Former Oak Ridge Mayor Tom Beehan and his wife, Kay Brookshire, are supporting Anderson County Commissioner Catherine Denenberg in her race to return to her commission seat representing District 6 in Oak Ridge, a press release said. Election day is Thursday, August 2.

“We support Catherine Denenberg because we believe it’s important to have an independent voice representing Oak Ridge on Anderson County Commission,” Beehan said. “She’s a great problem solver, a good listener, and as a County Commissioner, she works well with other commissioners and with those in Oak Ridge city government.”

Denenberg has represented District 6 since Commissioner Harry “Whitey” Hitchcock stepped down from the position early this year. Hitchcock asked her to seek his commission seat, and Denenberg said she was humbled and honored to do so. County Commissioners voted unanimously to appoint her to the seat, the press release said. Appeals court upholds Applewood warrants, board’s order to vacate

It’s not clear if it will make much difference now, but a state appeals court has upheld administrative warrants used by the City of Oak Ridge for inspections at Applewood Apartments and a city board order that had once called for vacating and demolishing six of the buildings.

The Tennessee Court of Appeals in Knoxville issued its opinion on Tuesday, July 24.

Joe Levitt, the owner of the former 13-building apartment complex on Hillside Road and Hunter Circle, had appealed a September 2016 order of the Anderson County Chancery Court in Clinton. That court, where M. Nichole Cantrell is chancellor, had granted summary judgement to the City of Oak Ridge, the Oak Ridge Board of Building and Housing Code Appeals, and former codes enforcement supervisor Denny Boss. Levitt, who has battled the city for years, had sought to overturn an Oak Ridge order that the six Applewood Apartment buildings be vacated and demolished.

Inspections conducted with the help of Corum Engineering in 2009 had found multiple code violations and structural deficiencies at the six buildings, including cracks in foundations, damaged and rotten floor joists, and evidence of wood-destroying insect activity, as well as dead animals and animal feces in the basement and crawl space, and excessive debris, lack of smoke detectors, plumbing leaks, and damaged roofing materials, among other issues, according to last week’s opinion. Unless the defects were corrected, the 2009 engineering report said, the top floors of the buildings could collapse because of a lack of structural support, according to the opinion. FAA comments on Oak Ridge Airport could be received this week

Officials working on the proposed Oak Ridge Airport could receive comments this week from the Federal Aviation Administration about a revised layout plan, a project consultant said Thursday.

Officials are finalizing an airport runway plan. If it is approved, that would be a very positive step, project consultant Billy Stair said.

In February, Stair said the FAA wanted project officials, who are proposing to build what is known as a Class B airport, to plan for a future expansion to a Class C airport—sometime around 2040.

“To plan for such a future expansion, we need to widen the runway and taxiway at the initial construction,” Stair said in February. “We do not need to lengthen the proposed 5,000-foot runway. The new runway alignment avoids encroachment by Highway 58.” [Read more…]

Tennessee Avenue road work to continue into fall

The road work on Tennessee Avenue near Methodist Medical Center is expected to continue into the fall, Oak Ridge officials said Friday.

The contractor, Adams and Sons Inc., is rebuilding a portion of Tennessee Avenue beginning east of New York Avenue down to the intersection with Michigan Avenue.

“The Oak Ridge Public Works Department is using this project as an opportunity to replace the existing 1940s-era water main along Tennessee Avenue, in addition to making curb, gutter, and sidewalk repairs,” a City of Oak Ridge press release said.

The new water line is being installed from west to east and the first section has already been placed in service, the press release said. Work has progressed to an area near Methodist Medical Center, which is approximately the halfway point for the water main. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge announces August hours for outdoor pool

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will extend open hours at the outdoor pool on Providence Road into the month of August. The schedule is as follows:

  • Monday-Friday: 100 meter lap swim, 9 a.m.-12 p.m.*
  • Monday-Friday: Kiddie/Shallow open swim, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.*
  • Wednesdays: After school open swim, 3 p.m.-8 p.m.
  • Saturday and Sunday: Open swim, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.

*The 100 meter lap swim and kiddie pool will be closed for a special event on August 1, 2018. [Read more…]

Animal adoption fees will be lower on Aug. 18

Animal adoption fees will be lower at the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter on Saturday, August 18.

The Animal Shelter is participating in the nationwide “Clear the Shelters” pet adoption event that day.

“Reduced adoption fees of $55 will be available all day as staff work to find a forever home for each adoptable animal at the shelter,” a press release said.

Animal shelters all over the U.S. are teaming up as part of the effort to find loving homes for pets in need, the press release said. This is the fourth year for the event. Oak Ridge is one of three animal shelters in East Tennessee to commit to the cause so far this year, the said. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission has recommended a rezoning that could allow about 200 homes on 32 acres near South Illinois Avenue and Centrifuge Way in south Oak Ridge.

The Planning Commission approved the rezoning request 8-0 on Thursday, said Stephen Whitson, Planning Commission chair.

There was no opposition.

The Planning Commission also voted 8-0 to recommend an associated land use plan map amendment.

The rezoning request and land use plan map amendment will now be considered by Oak Ridge City Council.

The property is currently zoned industrial. If approved by Council, the request would rezone the 32 acres as low-density residential. [Read more…]

Tonight: AKIN representative to speak to Democratic Women’s Club

Karen Latus, representing Allies of Knoxville’s Immigrant Neighbors (AKIN), will be the guest speaker at the Anderson County Democratic Women’s Club meeting on Monday, July 23. The club will meet at 6 p.m. at Swifty’s Atomic Grill, 119 South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.

Latus will discuss immigration and how the current political climate affects families, teachers, and school children, a press release said. She is active in AKIN, a network of people in the Knoxville area who work to encourage dialogue about issues related to immigrants and refugees.

“The network works to promote just and reasonable policies toward immigration and asylum and to foster a welcoming atmosphere in which all people are treated with dignity and respect,” the press release said. [Read more…]

Temporary lane closure on Oak Ridge Turnpike this week

One lane of a short section of Oak Ridge Turnpike will be closed this week.

“Southern Contractors Inc., working under contract to the City of Oak Ridge, will have the outside eastbound lane of Oak Ridge Turnpike from Lafayette Drive to East Division Road closed starting Monday, July 23, at 7 a.m.,” a press release said.

The work is necessary to set new forms along the roadways as part of the Intersection Improvement Project, and it is expected to last until the evening of Wednesday, July 25, the press release said. [Read more…]
