Get rid of expired, unused medicines on Saturday

You can get rid of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription or non-prescription medicines on Saturday. It’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.

You can drop off the medications at locations in Clinton, Norris, Oak Ridge, Oliver Springs, and Rocky Top.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications, a press release said.

Oak Ridge and Anderson County participate by encouraging residents across the city and county to properly dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired prescription or non-prescription medicines, the press release said. Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) of Anderson County has partnered with the Oak Ridge Police Department and other law enforcement agencies throughout the county to give two convenient options to residents for proper medicine disposal. Lockdown lifted at Oak Ridge High School

A lockdown was lifted at Oak Ridge High School Thursday morning after a staff member called police saying she spotted an unknown person walking outside one of the buildings.

The initial call came into the Oak Ridge Police Department at 10:52 a.m. Thursday, authorities said. The first officers were on scene within minutes and the school was placed on a level three lockdown.

The staff member told officers she saw a man dressed in all black clothing walking by the windows of the Secret City Academy building. She and other staff said they were alarmed after seeing the man act suspiciously, possibly jumping over a fence and several railings, so they called police, a City of Oak Ridge press release said.

ORPD officers searched the exterior school property while the school resource officer assisted staff inside the school. No one was found. Officers believe the person left the area before they arrived. [Read more…]

Cooper, a Vietnam veteran, longtime industrial recruiter, running for Charter Commission in District 2

Jim Cooper, a Vietnam veteran and former president of the Melton Hill Regional Industrial Association, is running for one of eight seats on the Anderson County Charter Commission in the November 8 election.

Cooper is running for the District 2 seat. District 2 includes the Clinton Community Center, South Clinton, and North Clinton voting precincts.

“The City of Clinton has had a charter form of government since 1954, and instituting a charter government in Anderson County presents our county with the opportunity to enact term limits,” Cooper said. “I support term limits (two consecutive four-year terms) for the offices of county commissioners and mayor. I also support electing commissioners for staggered terms—meaning we don’t elect all 16 in just one election year.” [Read more…]

Anderson County Chamber has Job Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 26

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce will host a Job Fair to recruit employees for local businesses and industries on Wednesday, October 26. The Job Fair is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. at Anderson County High School, which is at 130 Maverick Circle in Clinton.

This one-day event allows job seekers to connect face-to-face with local businesses and industries seeking employees, a press release said.

Job Fair exhibitors to date include: 3M, Aisin Automotive Casting Tennessee, American Employer Group, Anderson County Sheriff’s Department, Clayton Homes, Eagle Bend Manufacturing, East Tennessee Personal Care Service, Emory Valley Center, Express Employment Professionals, Greenfield Senior Living, Health Markets, Home Helpers of East Tennessee, King University, MAG-USA, Inc., Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), Powder Cote II, Protomet Corporation, Regions Bank, Roane State Community College, Sears, SL Tennessee, Techmer PM, TempSystems/TSI Industrial, Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Knoxville, Tennessee Truck Driving School, and WoodmenLife. Scott, county commissioner in District 7, running for Charter Commission

Anderson County Commissioner Theresa Scott, who represents District 7 in Oak Ridge, is running for Charter Commission in the November 8 election.

In a press release, Scott said she thinks it is extremely important that the representation of Anderson County residents continues to be both non-partisan and knowledgeable of current government processes.

One of the proposals the Anderson County Charter Commission could consider, Scott said, is changing how the county attorney is selected, possibly making it an elected position.

In Tennessee, 91 of 95 counties appoint their county attorney, rather than electing them, Scott said. [Read more…]

BBB-TV, Channel 12 in Oak Ridge, has posted video from a candidate forum for Oak Ridge Board of Education.

The candidate forum was Thursday, September 29, at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce.

There are three candidates for two school board seats in the November 8 election. The candidates are the two incumbents, Keys Fillauer and Angi Agle, and challenger Myra Mansfield.

Main Street Oak Ridge: New main entrance being built at Belk

A new main entrance is being built at the Belk department store as part of Main Street Oak Ridge, the 58-acre project to redevelop the former Oak Ridge Mall, which has now been demolished.

The new main entrance will face Rutgers Avenue, toward where the mall’s enclosed space used to be.

Belk is also getting a facelift and other work. It includes roof work; exterior painting; and work on the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning system.

Four stores will be built on the south side of Belk as part of Main Street Oak Ridge. The four stores are Maurice’s, Rack Room Shoes, Rue 21, and Ulta. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge: Driver runs red light, crashes into school bus

No students were injured in a school bus crash on Wednesday afternoon when the driver of a car ran a red light and collided with the bus, the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release.

The crash was reported at about 12:20 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Georgia Avenue. A preliminary investigation by Oak Ridge Police Department officers revealed that the driver of a four-door Volkswagen Passat sedan ran the red light, causing a collision with the school bus, the press release said.

There were three children on the bus at the time of the crash, along with the school bus driver. None of them were injured, the city said. [Read more…]

Forum for Anderson County Charter Commission candidates on Thursday

A Thursday forum will feature candidates for Charter Commission in five districts in Anderson County.

The forum starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, October 20, in the “Big Room” at Clinton Community Center, which is at 101 Hicks Street in Clinton, a press release said. The forum is hosted by AndersonCharter.com.

There are 19 people running for eight seats on the Anderson County Charter Commission. Only one person from each County Commission district will be elected to the Charter Commission.

Organizers of the charter effort hope to give residents the ability to have more input and involvement in their local government, the press release said. [Read more…]

Progress PAC endorses Dodson, Lee, Vogel for City Council

The Progress PAC political action committee has endorsed Jim Dodson, Joe Lee, and Hans Vogel for Oak Ridge City Council in the November 8 election.

The endorsements were announced Wednesday.

“From a crowded field of seven outstanding city council candidates, these three most clearly met the committee’s criteria, which includes support of the mission, vision, and legislative priorities of the Oak Ridge Chamber and a willingness to work closely with the Oak Ridge Board of Education,” Progress PAC Chairman Stephen Whitson said in a press release. High school students begin new automotive repair class

Students at Oak Ridge High School now have an opportunity to learn the skills they need to begin yet another high-demand, high-wage occupation after graduating.

The newest course, Automotive Maintenance and Light Repair, started with the 2016 fall semester as part of Oak Ridge Schools’ College, Career, and Technical Education, or CCTE, program. The class currently has 14 students enrolled for a fall and spring session.

Upon completing two full years of the class, each student will have worked with engine systems, transmissions, suspensions, steering, brakes, electrical, and HVAC. Students earn a full year’s worth of credit hours in one semester. The credits are recognized by the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT) as part of a dual enrollment program and will count toward further certifications with TCAT. Students can also obtain some Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications while still in high school. [Read more…]
