The 16th Annual Dick Smyser Community Lecture Series on Thursday, Oct. 3, will feature Professor Jane Maienschein, director of the Center for Biology and Society at Arizona State University.

She will give a talk titled “Embryos Under the Microscope: Negotiating Contested Ground Between Science and Society.”

The event is sponsored by Friends of ORNL. It is free of charge and will be held at the American Museum of Science and Energy at 300 S. Tulane Ave. in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

Anderson Chamber hosts small business seminar

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce Education/Workforce Development Council, in partnership with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center, will host a free workshop for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want a better understanding of starting a new business. The TSBDC advises and assists entrepreneurs and small business owners in our area at no cost to them.

This free seminar will be held from 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. Friday at the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce office at 245 N. Main St., Suite 200, in Clinton, with Jutta Bangs, senior business specialist with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center. The seminar discussion includes the forms of business organization, tax requirements, business licenses, business planning and financing options with additional discussion about SBA loan guarantee programs. Remote Area Medical Clinic a ‘huge success’

Organizers of last weekend’s Remote Area Medical Expedition at Clinton’s First Baptist Church said the event was a huge success.

During the two-day clinic, medical, dental, and vision services estimated at more than $504,000 were provided to patients at no charge. Organizers said the vast majority of the services provided were in the dental clinic to the tune of $413,505, including one patient who received more than $8,000 in dental care. [Read more…]

ORNL, UT receive Energy Department awards for nuclear training, technologies

The U.S. Department of Energy on Friday announced more than $60 million in nuclear energy research awards and improvements to university research reactors and infrastructure, including about $1.5 million to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee.

The 91 awards are meant to help train and educate the next generation of leaders in America’s nuclear industry as well as support new and advanced nuclear technologies from reactor materials to innovative sensors and instruments to more efficient manufacturing, DOE said in a press release. Local agencies receive more than $350K in highway safety funds

Tennessee officials last week announced $21.1 million in grants to Tennessee agencies to support highway traffic safety efforts, with more than $350,000 designated for local law enforcement agencies.

The grants include about $180,000 to the Anderson County District Attorney General’s Office for driving-under-the-influence abatement and prosecution, and roughly $40,000 to the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department for reducing fatalities in the county. The Oak Ridge Police Department received about $25,000 for alcohol saturation and checkpoints. [Read more…]

CONTACT Care Line celebrates 40 years with concert, workshops, new director

CONTACT Care Line of East Tennessee is marking 40 years of service to neighbors in crisis with a fundraising concert, a new series of listening workshops, a new executive director, and a new look.

The Oak Ridge-based nonprofit fields some 10,000 telephone calls annually from people who are lonely, facing a crisis, and at times contemplating suicide. It is staffed almost entirely by volunteers, including a contingent of University of Tennessee psychology students whose time listening to callers provides valuable experience. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra has a free family concert at 3 p.m. today (Sunday) at Oak Ridge High School.

“Hop on the music train as we perform a family-friendly concert ranging from ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ to ‘Polar Express’ to Eduard Strauss’s ‘Bahn Frei (Fast Track!)’ polka,” the ORCMA website says. “Come early for pre-concert activities, and come dressed in your railroad finest to join our costume parade. Pellissippi State receives $4.6 million federal grant

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez on Wednesday announced $474.5 million in grants to community colleges and universities around the country, including Pellissippi State Community College, for the development and expansion of innovative training programs in partnership with local employers, a press release said.

The 57 grants will support 190 projects in at least 183 schools in every state plus the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Pellissippi State’s grant is valued at about $4.6 million. Located near Oak Ridge in west Knox County, the community college is the leader of a consortium that received a total of roughly $12.7 million. [Read more…]

Senate passes Alexander, Udall resolution for nuclear workers’ Day of Remembrance

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Senate unanimously passed a resolution Wednesday by U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, and U.S. Senator Mark Udall, a Colorado Democrat, to designate Oct. 30, 2013, as the fifth National Day of Remembrance for nuclear weapons program workers.

“In Tennessee, more than 14,000 workers have made claims for compensation, many of whom worked countless hours with little-understood hazardous materials to build our country’s nuclear deterrent,” Alexander said. “Many Americans labored behind the scenes, and Tennesseans—like those from Anderson and Roane counties, for example—filed more claims than any other state. It’s these workers, and those all around the country, whose sacrifice we seek to honor with this day of remembrance.” [Read more…]

Sheriff’s Department probes house fire as case of arson

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a fire at a vacant mobile home on Moser Lane as arson. The fire was reported at around 7 p.m. Wednesday at 186 Moser Lane and was extinguished by crews from the Medford Volunteer Fire Department.

A deputy was called to the scene after firefighters reported finding two points of origin for the fire, one in the living room and another just inside the back door. [Read more…]
