Football: Powell eliminates Oak Ridge

Powell eliminated Oak Ridge from the Class 5A football playoffs in a 43-13 quarterfinal win on Friday.

The Panthers (11-2) advance to a semifinal game against West (13-0) next Friday, November 25. It’s a rematch of a semifinal game last year. Powell won that game 35-7 on the way to a state championship.

The season is over for the Wildcats (7-6). They lost to the Panthers twice this year, once during the regular season in a 30-14 loss on September 30 and then again in the playoffs on Friday.

Powell had almost twice as many yards on offense on Friday as Oak Ridge, 442 to 249, and more than double the number of first downs, 14 to 6. The Panthers had one player run for more than 100 yards and another with more than 100 yards receiving.

Powell senior quarterback Jordyn Potts, who has committed to Tennessee Tech, threw for 250 yards against Oak Ridge with five touchdowns and one interception. He was 16-of-26 passing (about 62 percent completions), according to preliminary game statistics by Oak Ridge’s Mark and Shawna Haste.

Wildcats play at Powell in quarterfinal

Oak Ridge will play at Powell in a quarterfinal game of the Class 5A football playoffs.

The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Friday, November 18. Tickets are $10.

Oak Ridge (7-5) lost to Powell 30-14 during the regular season on September 30. It was the only loss for the Wildcats in Region 3 this year, and they finished 4-1 in the region.

The Panthers (10-2), undefeated in Region 3 during the regular season this year (5-0), were state Class 5A champions last season.

City will pay at least $15 per hour for permanent, full-time work

Full-time permanent employees of the City of Oak Ridge will earn at least $15 per hour starting in January under a resolution unanimously approved by Oak Ridge City Council on Monday.

Seasonal, part-time, and temporary employees would not be guaranteed this wage.

City announces Thanksgiving closures, schedule changes

City of Oak Ridge offices and facilities will be closed on Thursday, November 24, and Friday, November 25, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

The Oak Ridge Public Library and book drop, Oak Ridge Civic Center and indoor pool, Senior Center, and Scarboro Center will be closed through the weekend, from Thursday, November 24, through Sunday, November 27, a press release said.

The Tennessee Centennial Golf Course will be closed Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 24, only and will re-open on regular schedule Friday, November 25.

Tree Lighting ceremony on Dec. 1

The annual Community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, December 1, in Alvin K. Bissell Park.

The tree lighting ceremony, sponsored by the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department, is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. December 1.

The tree, a Norway spruce that was presented to the city by the Womanâ€™s Club, has become part of a growing community tradition, a press release said.

City breaks ground on new water plant

The City of Oak Ridge broke ground Wednesday on its new water treatment plant, which could cost $78.3 million.

The new plant will use a technology known as ultrafiltration membranes, a type of purification that uses very fine membranes. It will be along the Clinch River at the city’s water intake off Pumphouse Road south of Bethel Valley Road.

â€œThis plant provides every drop of water to our 31,000 residents from Elza Gate on the east, to the Preserve on the west, and to all (U.S. Department of Energy) facilities, most notably Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Y-12 National Security Complex, which will soon include the new Uranium Processing Facility,â€ said Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch. â€œOur new plant will produce high-quality drinking water and deliver it through new pipelines more reliably and efficiently than current operations.â€

Oak Ridge tennis court dance is Thursday

The Manhattan Project National Historical Park will host a Tennis Court Dance in Oak Ridge on Thursday, July 21.

The dance is scheduled from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Jackson Square tennis courts.
