Authors speak about delights, frights along Cumberland Trail on Feb. 2

Well-known botanist Larry Pounds and his son, local journalist Ben Pounds, spent a month in 2012 hiking all 200 miles of the Cumberland Trail that existed then. Combining Larry’s extensive botany experience and Ben’s training as a writer, they documented their experiences in a book, “Wildly Strolling Along,” a press release said.

The public is invited to an informational program about their Cumberland Trail experience in a 7 p.m. program on Thursday, February 2. The Pounds will share slides of their favorite sights along the Cumberland Trail and provide basic information about the trail, the press release said. [Read more…]

Registration open for lifeguard certification course

Registration is now open for a lifeguard certification course being offered by the Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department during spring break.

The course will be held Monday, March 20, through Friday, March 24, at the Oak Ridge Civic Center’s indoor pool facility. The class begins at 10 a.m. each day, and it is scheduled to run until 2:30 p.m.

There are some pre-requisites for the course. Registrants must be at least 15 years old and be able to pass the pre-swim test for admission. The test will be held on the first day of class. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Civic Center Recreation Building will be closed to the public on Wednesday, January 25, and Thursday, January 26, for an Electric Department training event.

As a reminder, the Senior Center will also be closed between Monday, January 23, and Saturday, January 28, as it transitions to the Civic Center Recreation Building. The Senior Center will reopen Monday, January 30, at the Civic Center. [Read more…]

All programs are back on schedule after crews had to replace a piece of equipment that controls the temperature of the water in the Oak Ridge Civic Center’s indoor pool.

The pool was forced to close on Wednesday, January 4, but it re-opened at noon on Saturday, January 14, once crews were able to make the needed repairs. The new pool heater is more energy-efficient than the previous model, a press release said. The water was back up to its normal temperature of 83 degrees shortly after re-opening.

Council approves $120,000 for city-owned golf course

The Oak Ridge City Council agreed in a 5-2 vote on Monday to provide $120,000 to continue operating the Tennessee Centennial Golf Course, which the city owns in east Oak Ridge off Edgemoor Road.

The request this year was smaller than it was in 2015, when Council approved a $325,000 transfer, but the golf course is still short of money needed to operate, despite all marketing efforts, Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson told City Council members in a memo before Monday’s meeting.

Most of the $120,000 in funding—or $70,024 of it—will be used for accounts payable. The rest will be used for cash flow and salaries, Watson said.

“The slow winter season now requires funding to pay necessary costs and salaries through the winter quarter (January-March 2017),” Watson said. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge City Council on Monday will consider approving $120,000 to continue operating the Tennessee Centennial Golf Course in east Oak Ridge off Edgemoor Road.

The request comes about one year after Council approved, in a 6-1 vote, a $325,000 transfer for operations at the golf course. About $225,000 of that transfer, a cash infusion, was for outstanding accounts payable, including for expenses that included clothing in the pro shop, a management fee, fertilizer, and irrigation costs. Another $100,000 was operational funding for the winter, including maintenance of the greens.

The request is smaller this year, but the golf course is still short of money needed to operate, despite all marketing efforts, Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson said in a Wednesday memo to City Council members.

Registration for new 3-on-3 basketball league ends Friday

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department has started a 3-on-3 men’s basketball league for the winter 2017 program.

This new league is designed for recreationally spirited athletes seeking a fun and friendly environment where they can get some exercise while enjoying a fun and social basketball program, a press release said.

New Year’s Walk at UT Arboretum on Jan. 2

If you want to get some exercise early in the new year, you can go on a short hike during the Third Annual New Year’s Walk at the University of Tennessee Arboretum on Monday.

The free walk is offered by the UT Arboretum Society. It starts at 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 2,  at the UT Arboretum Auditorium. There, you will be greeted by fellow hikers and offered coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks, a press release said.

At 10 a.m., the group will leave for a guided walk that will last about 45 minutes, the press release said. The hike will follow a forest trail and will visit the Elmore Holly Collection, giving participants the opportunity to see the hollies still covered with berries. [Read more…]

City explains how to request use of athletic facilities in 2017

Organizations are invited to request use of athletics facilities by the end of January for the time period of March 1, 2017, to October 31, 2017.

Please be aware that your request is not a reservation until it has been reviewed and approved. Organizations or groups with delinquent paperwork or fees will not be considered in the reservation process. Only requests for the stated period of time will be considered. Facilities will be block-booked ahead of time for expected city and school use.

The City of Oak Ridge is asking that all facility requests be submitted by 5 p.m. January 31, 2017. Requests received by this date will be given priority over later requests, but please understand that city and school use of facilities will have priority throughout the year. [Read more…]

Jefferson Middle School has been awarded a Shape the State grant from the BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Health Foundation to upgrade its physical education program.

The grants, valued at $10,000 each, provide the nationally acclaimed Sports Play and Active Recreation for Kids (SPARK) physical education curriculum, teacher training, and equipment for each recipient school. In addition, Jefferson received $1,000 to spend on PE, nutrition, and wellness efforts. Members of the Physical Education Department worked with Oak Ridge Schools Office of Coordinated School Health to write the grant.

“We are very thankful to BlueCross for this providing schools in Tennessee with this wonderful grant opportunity,” said JMS Physical Education teacher Katie Bolling. “Jefferson Middle School students will benefit from the wonderful SPARK equipment. Windrock opens mountain bike park in Oliver Springs

Windrock Park is opening a new uplift assisted mountain bike park in Oliver Springs. The bike park features nine trails, including a new flow trail and improved intermediate terrain.

“The terrain at Windrock Park is amazing, and anyone who has ridden the mountain bike trails can see that the potential has always been huge,” said Neko Mulally, professional mountain bike rider who, along with fellow professional biker Sean Leader, designed and built the park. “When the opportunity came up to develop the trails into something bigger, I had to jump on it.”

The bike park is laid out on 550 acres nestled in the Cumberland Mountains on the Windrock Park’s property, which is a total of 72,000 acres. The park includes five trails ranging from one mile to 1.5 miles long, each dropping 1,100 vertical feet taking an average of five to 10 minutes to complete. There are connector trails to give riders the option to combine trails. [Read more…]
