Community Band Concert is Sunday at ORHS

The Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble has its last indoor concert of the 2017-2018 series on Sunday. It’s the “April Showers” show at Oak Ridge High School.

The concert starts at 3:30 p.m. Sunday in the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.

The summer season of outdoor concerts begins on Memorial Day, a press release said.

The Sunday performance promises to be exceptional, featuring a variety of songs including Hoagy Carmichael’s “Star Dust,” featuring trumpet soloist Kim Kasten; Leonard Bernstein’s “Highlights of West Side Story”; Alfred Reed’s exciting “Punchinello”; and James Curnow’s lovely “Cherry Tree” from his “Appalachian Dances,” the press release said. Other numbers on Sunday’s program will be Jean Sibelius’s “Finlandia,” John Clifford Heed’s “In Storm and Sunshine,” and Leroy Anderson’s “Belle of the Ball.” [Read more…]

Holocaust Remembrance Program is Sunday in Oak Ridge

There will be a Holocaust Remembrance Program at the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge on Sunday.

It’s presented by the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge and the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. The Holocaust Remembrance Service is sponsored by the Oak Ridge Interfaith Partnership, and the public is encouraged to attend, a press release said. The City of Oak Ridge has proclaimed April 15 to be Holocaust Remembrance Day for 2018, the press release said.

The Holocaust Remembrance Program will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge Sanctuary, which is at 101 West Madison Lane. There will be a candle lighting ceremony, songs, readings by members of both congregations, and prayers, the press release said. [Read more…]

Under way: Roane State Oak Ridge hosts Open House, Reconnect Ready

Prospective students of all ages are extended a cordial invitation to an Open House at the Oak Ridge campus of Roane State Community College, which is at 701 Briarcliff Avenue in Oak Ridge.

The event is being held on a Saturday, April 14, in the atrium of the campus’s Coffey-McNally Building. It began at 10:30 a.m. with check-in.

Jim McDaniel, director of student enrollment and recruitment, said the Open House is for “anyone who wants to go to college.”

Information about the admission process and financial aid scholarships will be available. Faculty members will be on hand to discuss the college’s academic programs. [Read more…]

Council to discuss Rails to Trails, school resource officer program

The Oak Ridge City Council will discuss a part of the Rails to Trails program, which could convert a former railway in central Oak Ridge into a bicycle and pedestrian greenway, and the current status of the city’s school resource officer program on Tuesday.

The discussion of the design and acquisition process for the CSX Railroad railway, which is no longer being used, will be led by Jon Hetrick, Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks director, and representatives from Morton, Thomas, and Associates of Kingsport, Tennessee.

The discussion of the current status of the city’s school resource officer program will be led by Oak Ridge Police Chief James Akagi. [Read more…]

Andersonville man dies after jumping into pond while fleeing from deputies

An Andersonville man died after jumping into a pond in Claxton while fleeing from Anderson County Sheriff’s Department deputies on Thursday night, authorities said.

The man has been identified as Ron Walter Austin, 41.

The chase started at about 11:45 p.m. Thursday when Anderson County Sheriff’s Department narcotics investigators observed what was believed to be a drug transaction between people in two vehicles in a business parking lot near North Charles G. Seivers Boulevard in Clinton, Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said Friday night.

Deputies attempted to stop both vehicles as they left the parking lot, Lucas said. One vehicle did stop, but the other fled from North Charles G. Seivers Boulevard onto Interstate 75, where deputies saw the driver throw out an article out of the car window, Lucas said. [Read more…]

Two Oak Ridge candidates qualify to run for Roane County Commission

Two Oak Ridge candidates have qualified to run for two seats in District 4 on the Roane County Commission in the August 2 election.

The two Oak Ridge candidates, Charlotte Bowers and Cory Jenkins, are among five candidates who have qualified to run in the election.

The three other candidates are from Oliver Springs. They are James W. Brummett, an incumbent, and Thaxton H. “T.H.” Brown Jr. and Jerry W. White.

Former Roane County Commissioner Steve Kelley, an Oak Ridge resident, had occupied one of the District 4 seats since 2010, and he had been expected to seek re-election in August. But Kelley died in February. [Read more…]

Two Oak Ridge Fire Department swimmers rescued a man who had fallen out of a canoe near Clark Center Park in south Oak Ridge on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

The man, who was not identified, cannot swim, but he was wearing a life jacket, the City of Oak Ridge said in a press release Friday. He was hanging onto a fence post in the water after falling out of his canoe, but he was cold and could not get himself back into the overturned canoe or to the shore, the press release said.

The Oak Ridge 911 dispatch center had received a call that a canoe had overturned in the cove at the entrance to Clark Center Park at about 3:35 p.m. Thursday.

Oak Ridge Fire Department Captain Jason Benjamin has been training a crew of firefighters to become rescue swimmers during the past 24 months, and their training was put to the test on Thursday, the press release said. [Read more…]

Attempted carjacking charge added in crash that injured officer

An attempted carjacking charge has been added to the eight charges already filed against a man accused of injuring an Oak Ridge officer when he fled from police and crashed on South Illinois Avenue last week.

An Oak Ridge High School violist has earned first chair in the Tennessee All-State Orchestra, ORHS Orchestra reported on Twitter.

That means Selena Piercy is the top high school violist in Tennessee, ORHS Orchestra said.

Piercy will be the first chair viola in the All-State Orchestra. This is a first for Oak Ridge High School, according to Oak Ridge Schools.
