New COVID case average fluctuates, hits recent daily lows

The daily average of new COVID-19 cases in Anderson County this past week was about the same as it was two weeks ago, roughly nine new cases per day.

But the number of new daily cases fell to three and two on Monday and Tuesday. Those are the lowest numbers of new daily cases in Anderson County since early July.

There have been two more deaths in Anderson County reported due to COVID-19 in the past week. Eight people have now died from COVID-19 in the county, according to the Tennessee Department of Health.

And there have been two more hospitalizations. A total of 34 patients have been hospitalized for COVID-19 since the pandemic began in Anderson County on March 20.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the county rose to 841 on Tuesday.

New COVID-19 daily case average drops again in Anderson County

Although it has climbed back up some, the average number of new cases of COVID-19 per day in Anderson County fell by about 50 percent in the week that ended Tuesday.

It was the second consecutive week of a smaller number of new cases per day, on average, of COVID-19 in Anderson County.

It’s not clear what led to the drop in new cases per day or whether it might be related to the more widespread use of masks, including at businesses that started requiring them in the second half of July.

In the week that ended Tuesday, August 11, there was an average of 9.7 new cases of COVID-19 per day in Anderson County. That’s a level not seen since the first half of July, after the growth in COVID-19 cases had started to accelerate in the county.

The average 9.7 new cases per day last week was about 50 percent fewer cases per day than the average 18.6 new cases reported each day in the previous week, the seven-day period that ended Tuesday, August 4.

But since Tuesday, the average number of cases per day has climbed back up a bit to 12.2.

The highest average number of new cases per day, as tracked by Oak Ridge Today, was in the week ending Tuesday, July 28, when there were about 24.7 new cases per day. July appears to have been the worst month of the pandemic in Anderson County so far.

Updated: Crews repairing water main break

Oak Ridge crews repaired a water main break at the corner of Rutgers Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike, the city said last week.

Just before 5 p.m. Thursday, the city said Oak Ridge Public Works crews were shutting valves to isolate the break. Crews could be repairing the main for the next several hours, the city said. Water was cut off for the Jimmy Johns and Home Federal Bank on the Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Oak Ridge has mask policy for city employees

The City of Oak Ridge has a mask policy for municipal employees.

Here is what the city said last month:

Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson issued an administrative memo on June 29. It detailed a policy that requires city employees to wear masks or other face coverings when close to the public.

Inside of all municipal buildings, employees should conduct temperature checks and health questioning before they admit any resident to city-secured work areas. City employees will also be required to wear masks inside of any buildings when performing official city duties and interacting with the general public.

Dodson running for second term on City Council

Jim Dodson

Oak Ridge City Council member Jim Dodson is running for a second four-year term in the November 3 municipal election.

Dodson has been a teacher in Oak Ridge Schools for 33 years.

He was elected to City Council in November 2016, and he serves as the Council representative on the Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission and Youth Advisory Board.

In a press release, Dodson said he has a strong record of community service and leadership on several civic boards, organizations, and commissions.

“I will definitely work alongside my Oak Ridge and East Tennessee neighbors for a better quality of life in our community,” Dodson said. “I hope to continue giving our residents a voice on City Council and promoting excellent educational opportunities for all our kids and young adults.

“I will also continue to help recruit businesses and families to Oak Ridge as the place to relocate. I look forward to working as an Oak Ridge City Council member to maintain and improve all city services while providing safe and thriving neighborhoods.”

Youngest, oldest have highest COVID rate increases; young adults, middle aged have most cases

The two youngest age groups and the oldest age group had the highest rates of increase in COVID-19 cases in Anderson County in July, and young adults had the most cases and the largest number of new cases.

The two youngest age groups and the oldest age group started the month with the lowest number of cases. But the 11-20 age group ended the month about in the middle of the nine age groups in terms of number of cases.

Cases among patients 0-10 years old grew from one on July 1 to 29 on July 31, according to data from the Tennessee Department of Health. That’s 29 times as many cases at the end of the month as the beginning, and an increase of 28 new cases during the month. It’s the highest rate of increase among all age groups, starting with the lowest number of cases.

Cases among patients 11-20 grew from six on July 1 to 74 on July 31. That’s 12.3 times as many cases at the end of the month as the beginning, and an increase of 68 new cases during the month. It’s the second-highest rate of increase and the third-highest number of new cases among all age groups.

Updated: Anderson County has more than 500 COVID cases, reports two more deaths

The number of COVID-19 cases in Anderson County rose to 500 on Tuesday, and the county has reported its fourth and fifth deaths due to the new coronavirus.

Three of the county’s five deaths have been in the past two weeks. Two of those have been in the past week.

On Wednesday, Anderson County reported another 36 new cases of COVID-19—just below the all-time high of 39—and the total number of cases climbed to 536.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the county has more than doubled in 13 days. There were 252 COVID-19 cases in Anderson County on July 16.

The 536 cases reported Wednesday means about 0.7 percent of the county’s roughly 77,000 residents have been infected with COVID-19.

The number of active cases (total cases minus recoveries and deaths) continued to increase significantly, rising to 271 on Wednesday, according to data published by the Tennessee Department of Health. (The number of active cases had been 241 on Tuesday.) Active cases increased by 118 in Anderson County in one week. They have more than doubled in the past two weeks.

The county reported a record-high 39 new daily cases twice in the past week, first on Thursday and then again on Monday.

Anderson, Roane report record highs in new COVID-19 cases

Anderson County reported 39 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, another record. And Roane County reported 33 new cases, also a record.

Oak Ridge is in Anderson and Roane counties. Most of the city’s residents live in Anderson County, but the west side of the city and some large federal sites are in Roane County.

Anderson County now has 374 COVID-19 cases, with 171 active cases, and Roane County has 189, with 111 active.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Anderson County has more than tripled since early July, and the number of active cases has more than quintupled. The number of hospitalizations has more than doubled this month.

The last record of new daily COVID-19 cases in Anderson County was Tuesday, when 27 new cases were reported. Before that, the previous high was 23 new cases on July 8.

TVC Virtual Summit Thursday afternoon to focus on Oak Ridge, Huntsville

The second session of the Tennessee Valley Corridor Virtual Summit Series this afternoon (Thursday, July 23) will focus on Oak Ridge and Huntsville, and science and technology in the corridor.

Most of the TVC’s annual $75 billion in federal investments are made in the historic communities of Huntsville and Oak Ridge, a summit advisory said.

You can learn more about the federal missions based in the two cities and how they impact the nation and world during today’s session, the advisory said.

Oliver Springs mayor feeling fine, out of quarantine

Oliver Springs Mayor Omer Cox on Wednesday said he is feeling fine, does not have any symptoms of COVID-19, and is out of quarantine.

Cox tested positive for COVID-19 before a scheduled surgery. He learned of the test result on Monday of last week. The surgery was canceled.

Oliver Springs announced after the positive diagnosis that it was closing City Hall until August 3.

COVID-19 cases triple in county, hospitalizations double

The number of COVID-19 cases has tripled in Anderson County since early July, and the number of hospitalizations has doubled.

Anderson County had 105 total cases of COVID-19 on July 2, when the growth in cases started to accelerate. On Tuesday, it had more than three times as many cases, 327.

The number of active cases—total cases minus recoveries and deaths—has increased even faster. The number of active cases in Anderson County on July 2 was 32. On Tuesday, the county had about five times as many active cases, 154.

The number of total cases and active cases—now 327 and 154, respectively—have both increased about 50 percent in one week.

Anderson County hospitalizations increased to 21 on Tuesday. That’s up from 10 on July 5, meaning more than half of the county’s hospitalizations have occurred in less than three weeks. Seven of the hospitalizations have been in the past week.

Anderson County has reported a third death due to COVID-19, the first since June 4. Joe Lenhard, a former U.S. Department of Energy executive and a founder of the Community Reuse Organization of East Tennessee, died of COVID-19 on Friday at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

Separately, an Oak Ridge employee who worked at the Y-12 National Security Complex and lived in Maryville died of COVID-19 on Wednesday at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

Roane County will not require face masks

Roane County will not require face masks or face coverings, County Executive Ron Woody said Friday.

In an online video, Woody said most essential businesses are now requiring face coverings. That means a mask requirement by the county may not be necessary anymore, Woody said. Stores that require face coverings now include Kroger, Lowe’s, and Walmart.

“The decisions were made the businesses, which we think was the best decision anyway,” Woody said. It’s better than a government mandate, which no one wants, the county executive said.

“Our businesses should step up and be the responsible party, and they were,” Woody said.
