Historian Dan Pierce will discuss his upcoming book “Corn from a Jar: Moonshining in the Great Smoky Mountains” on Wednesday at Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus.

Workers are repairing a 13-foot sinkhole under the Oak Ridge High School soccer field.
It started as an 18-inch hole two weeks ago, said Allen Thacker, Oak Ridge Schools maintenance and operations supervisor. A section of the field “fell out,” and water was observed at the bottom.
Workers dug down about eight feet and found water running in, Thacker said. [Read more…]

New principals will start this summer at Robertsville Middle School and the Oak Ridge Schools Preschool, officials announced Friday.
The new RMS principal is James Hundertmark, Oak Ridge school officials said in a press release. Hundertmark is now lead associate principal of Klein High School in Klein, Texas.
The new preschool principal is Melinda White. She has been interim principal at Oak Ridge Schools Preschool since May 2012. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Board of Education unanimously approved a four-year contract with new superintendent Bruce Borchers in a short special meeting Monday.
Borchers will be paid $178,000 per year, and he starts June 18, said Bob Eby, school board vice chair.
“We’ve got a top-notch superintendent that can take us to the next level,” Eby said. He led the contract negotiations on behalf of the board with the help of Oak Ridge Schools Human Resources Director Christine Lee and school attorney Larry Giordano. [Read more…]

Deirdre Barrett, a psychologist on the Harvard Medical School faculty known for her research on dreams and hypnosis, will return to her hometown to speak on “Dreams and Innovation” on Friday, April 26, in Oak Ridge.
Barrett is the featured speaker at the “Dreams and Innovation” program hosted by the Oak Ridge Public Schools Education Foundation to honor teachers who have received the Foundation’s 2013 grant awards, beginning at 5 p.m. at New Hope Center.
The free event is open to the public, and no reservations are required.
Barrett is an Oak Ridge High School graduate, and she will describe how dreams contribute to innovation and problem solving, relating research from her book, “The Committee of Sleep.” The book is subtitled “How Artists, Scientists, and Athletes Use Dreams for Creative Problem-Solving—How You Can Too.” [Read more…]

“VolsTeach” will be the focus of a presentation by university faculty member Peggy Bertrand, the guest speaker at “Lunch with the League” at noon Tuesday in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.
“VolsTeach” is a University of Tennessee program targeted to undergraduate math, science, or engineering majors who are interested in expanding their professional skills and exploring a career in secondary teaching. Without any additional credit hours, students can graduate in four years with a degree and obtain licensure as highly qualified teachers in their respective content areas. Oak Ridge City Schools has announced that the application period for renewing or applying for tuition and cross boundary applications is April 8 thru April 26. The approved applications are good for one year.
If your child remains in good standing during that time period, you will need to complete a cross boundary application for the upcoming school year and return it to your child’s school. [Read more…]

Three-time Grammy award-winner Bill Miller will perform Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Princess Theatre in downtown Harriman.
Presented by Roane State Community College’s Arts and Lectures Committee, Miller plays rock, country, and folk music blended with Native American flutes and drums. His hits include “Reservation Road,” “My People,” and “Trail of Freedom,” and he has performed with artists such as Tori Amos, Eddie Vedder, the BoDeans, Richie Havens, and Arlo Guthrie.
A highly regarded lecturer on cultural awareness and race relations, Miller will also speak about addiction in the Native American community at the college’s Oak Ridge campus and at the Roane County campus in Harriman. [Read more…]
Roane State Community College’s Music Department will host an alumni concert on Saturday, April 6, from 7-9 p.m. in the O’Brien Theatre on the Roane County campus in Harriman.
Admission is free.
The concert will feature alumni from Concert Choir, Celebration Singers, Jazz Band, and Bluegrass Band. As this year’s virtual choir project, the Music Department will debut an original composition, “Diversity, Similarity,” by Roane State professor Geol Greenlee with lyrics by student Chris Arnold. Frisbee-flinging robots took over the Knoxville Convention Center last weekend, as thousands of high school students, mentors, and volunteers gathered for the third annual FIRST robotics Smoky Mountains regional competition.
Local teams Hardin Valley Academy, Oak Ridge High School, and Halls High School netted the championship title in a nail-biting finale at the regional event, qualifying them to compete in the national finals held April 24-27 in St. Louis. A team from Roane County High School, which won the Rookie All Star award, is also bound for nationals. The four high schools are among 14 teams sponsored by UT-Battelle, the managing contractor of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The FIRST robotics competition gives high school teams six weeks to design, build, and program a complex robot that can meet the intense demands of the year’s game. Throwing discs and climbing pyramids were among the challenges of the 2013 game, called Ultimate Ascent. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge school board has offered the superintendent’s job to Bruce Borchers, who is now superintendent of the Rockwood School District in Eureka, Mo.
The position, which has a salary range of about $175,000, is still subject to contract negotiations.
