Punxsutawney Phil might think early spring is on the way, but there is still plenty of time to enjoy your favorite winter weather comfort foods and help local families!

On Monday, February 10, leave the cooking to ADFAC’s Dine & Donate partners. On that day, participating restaurants will donate a portion of sales to support Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC).

February’s featured Dine & Donate supporter is the Soup Kitchen, located in Jackson Square. Although spectacular any time of year, there’s nothing quite like a hot bowl of homemade soup to disrupt winter’s chill. Free urban gardening workshop on Saturday

The Winter Farmers’ Market will offer a free workshop on urban gardening in Oak Ridge on Saturday.

The workshop will start at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 8. It will be presented by Jacob Resor, manager of the Center for Urban Agriculture at the Knoxville Botanical Garden and Arboretum. Resor will talk about how KBG maintains a series of community gardens that help people grow food for themselves and others.

The workshop is located at the Winter Farmers’ Market, which is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through March 28. The market is in the gym at St. Mary’s School at 323 Vermont Avenue in Oak Ridge. Previous free workshops at the market have included “Making Simple Worm Bins” and “Healthy Eating on a Budget,” a press release said.

U.S. Census seeking workers in Anderson County

The U.S. Census Bureau is seeking census takers in Anderson County for this year’s census.

Larry Carignan, a recruiter for the census in Anderson County, will be at the Anderson County Courthouse in Clinton on two dates this month to answer questions and help anyone who might be interested in applying to work as a census taker, a press release said.

Carignan will be at the Courthouse from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, February 4, and Thursday, February 13, to recruit potential workers for the federal census in Anderson County. He will be set up next to the Courtesy Booth on the Courthouse’s first floor near the elevators.

Local organizations, congregations celebrating community unity

Community Unity Celebration has events this week. During the celebration, local organizations and congregations are working together to offer opportunities for residents of Oak Ridge and surrounding areas to come together to get to know each other and build community, a press release said.

The Celebration kicked off with the Human Rights Rally on Saturday, January 18, and it will end with the World Day of Prayer on Friday, March 6.

“Please join us as you can!” the press release said.

Second annual writing contest under way; scholarships available

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church

Grace Writers of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge is featuring its second annual writing contest in memory of two members: Carol Oen and Cleva Marrow, both Oak Ridge writers.

Carol Oen wrote poetry, freelance articles for magazines, and a senior romance novel, “Songs That Remember,” about Alzheimer’s and caregivers. She taught memoir writing for the Oak Ridge Institute of Continued Learning. Cleva Marrow freelanced for The Oak Ridger and The Knoxville News Sentinel.

Presentation today about taking charge as a medical advocate

At the February meeting of Women’s Interfaith Dialogue, Gay Marie Logsdon will give a presentation about taking charge as a medical advocate.

The meeting will be held on Monday, February 3, at the Jewish Congregation of Oak Ridge, 101 West Madison Lane, with an opening reception at 10:45 a.m. and program at 11 a.m., a press release said.

Logsdon’s presentation is based on her own experience as well as that of family and friends over more than 30 years, the press release said.

“The urgency to speak about medical advocacy grew out of months of in-patient and out-patient medical care, torrents of insurance claims, and gradual recovery following a head-on car wreck in 2016,” the press release said.

Big Ed’s Pizza celebrates 50 years today

Big Ed’s Pizza, Oak Ridge’s most well-known restaurant, is celebrating 50 years on Monday, February 3.

Special merchandise will be available for sale, including 50th anniversary limited editions of Big Ed’s Pizza beer mugs and shirts, a press release said, and there will be free cake from Oak Ridge bakery Sassy Pants Sweets and Treats.

The Big Ed’s staff will be wearing a special “1970” shirt in observance, the press release said.

The festivities start at 11 a.m. Monday.

AC Commission schedules public hearing on TVA request for landfill at Bull Run

The Anderson County Commission has scheduled a public hearing to discuss a request from the Tennessee Valley Authority to build a 60-acre landfill on the Bull Run Fossil Plant site in Claxton.

The hearing is scheduled to start at 4 p.m. Tuesday, February 18, in Room 312 of the Anderson County Courthouse at 100 North Main Street in Clinton.

The proposed new landfill is known Site J, and it has been characterized as a three-cell unit capable of holding eight to nine million cubic yards of coal combustion residuals, according to a public hearing notice.

Roane State Foundation wins $6,000 grant from CNS Y-12

The Roane State Foundation has won a $6,000 grant from the CNS Y-12 Community Investment Fund to help adult students in the community college’s programs in computer science, cybersecurity, and mechatronics, a press release said.

CNS operates the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, and the contractor established the fund through the East Tennessee Foundation in 2014 as part of its commitment to Oak Ridge and the surrounding communities.

Officials said the grant will fund scholarships to help students pay for industry-recognized certifications. Those certifications are important tools for graduates to pair with their college degree to demonstrate to employers they have the skills and documentations that often allow graduates to earn higher wages when going to work, the press release said.

Voting rights to be discussed Tuesday

Voting rights will be discussed in Oak Ridge on Tuesday.

The speaker will be Katie A. Cahill, associate director of the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy and director of the Leadership and Governance Program. Cahill has a courtesy post as an assistant professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.

Her Tuesday talk will be to the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge. Her talk is titled “Voting Rights, Laws and Trends: A Look Ahead to 2020,” a press release said.

REAC/TS retains PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre designation

OAK RIDGE, Tenn.—The Radiation Emergency Assistance Center/Training Site (REAC/TS) received its redesignation as a Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Collaborating Centre recently.

Collaborating Centres serve as key institutions throughout the world providing relevant expertise and functioning as an extension of the international public health agency’s mission to improve health outcomes for all people.

REAC/TS, located in Oak Ridge, has been a PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for radiation emergency assistance since 1980. The centres must be redesignated every four years by fulfilling multiple criteria, including: high scientific and technical standing at national and international levels; prominent place in the country’s health, scientific, or educational structures; high quality of scientific and technical leadership; strong working relationships with other institutions in the country and at intercountry, regional and global levels; clear ability, capacity, and readiness to participate in international cooperative activities; a clear technical and geographical relevance of both the institution and its activities to WHO’s program priorities.

REAC/TS Director Dr. Carol Iddins will continue to serve as head of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre for radiation emergency assistance.

“REAC/TS has been very fortunate to have a strong, long-standing affiliation with the WHO Radiation Emergency Medical Preparedness and Assistance Network (REMPAN) and a close working relationship with Dr. Zhanat Carr, WHO Radiation Program, Department of Public Health and Environment,” Dr. Iddins said. “This relationship is crucially important to already have in place, because we realize when an incident occurs it can affect the global population.”

UT creative writing director to speak at Lunch 4 Literacy in Oak Ridge

A creative writing director at the University of Tennessee will speak at Lunch 4 Literacy in Oak Ridge in March.

The popular annual event is co-sponsored by the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club and the Altrusa International Club of Oak Ridge. It will be held at Oak Ridge High School at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 24.

This year, the award-winning speaker is Margaret Lazarus Dean, an associate professor and director of creative writing in the Department of English at the University of Tennessee. [Read more…]
