Michael Rhodes, age 62, of Louisville, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at his residence.

Mike was very giving and kind-hearted. He adored his boys and grandkids. Mike enjoyed playing cards, traveling, and football.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and Helen Rhodes; stepmom, Judy Rhodes; daughter, Tammy Braden; and sister, Vickie Hunckler. [Read more…]

Lloyd William Jones, age 67, from Clinton, passed away on Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Lloyd was born May 13, 1946, in Jefferson, N.C., to parents Kermit Clifton and Okla Fay Jones.

He is survived by his children, Cindy Woodring, Christopher Beatty, and Ashley Jones Salem; a sister, Carol Johnson; grandchildren, Phillip Woodring, Leigh Ann Isaacs, Alexander Beatty, Elijah Beatty, Andrew Beatty, and Lydia Hope Beatty; great-grandchildren, Ariah Isaacs and Braxton Woodring; a nephew, Barry Johnson; a niece, Sherry Barker; and a close friend, Pat Crisp. Dennis James Farr

Dennis James Farr, age 63, a resident of the Batley Community in Anderson County, passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Farr was born March 1, 1950, in Morgantown, W.V. At an early age, his family moved to Mentor, Ohio.

Following his high school graduation, he entered into the United States Air Force and served his country during the Vietnam War. Following his military discharge, he began college at the Deep Springs College in California, receiving the first of several degrees. He later attended college in Texas, before completing his education in Ohio, where he received a master’s degree in both math and science.

Dennis retired from Cisco Systems Inc. in Knoxville as a software engineer. He enjoyed solving mathematical problems, and he was known for a patent he received for an Alpha Numeric Keyboard that he constructed. Other hobbies include long-distance bike riding and taking things apart and sometimes getting them back together. [Read more…]

Dennis Gene “Denny” Carroll, age 65, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at his home.

Mr. Carroll was born in the New River community in Anderson County, on Nov. 27, 1947. He grew up and lived in Rosedale before moving to Oliver Springs, where he has continued to live.

Dennis was a retired residential builder and painter. His greatest pleasure came from working and going to church. He was a faithful Christian and a member of the Big Mountain Baptist Church. [Read more…]

Minnie Louise Thompson

Minnie Louise Thompson, age 83, of Oak Ridge, celebrated her home-going at her home on Nov. 25, 2013.

She was born to the union of the late Linzie and Frances Lott of Duck Hill, Miss., on June 7, 1930.

She leaves to cherish her memories, her sons, Lindsay (Shirley) Nix of Chicago, Ill., J. C. “Jerry” (Dorothy) Nix of Pikeville, Tenn., David Nix and Henry Nix of Knoxville; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; specials friends, Mrs. Janice Thomas, Elvin and Pearl Staples, Mr. and Mrs. Gary Henderson, and Mrs. Mary Threat; and a host of other friends.

She was an active member of Oak Valley Baptist Church for more than 50 years. Mrs. Thompson was an LPN with the Children’s Clinic for many years and retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory. [Read more…]

Rosa Estella Melton, age 102, of Andersonville, passed away on Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, at Golden Living Center—Windwood in Clinton.

Mrs. Melton was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Oliver Springs. She had been a member of the home demonstration club and enjoyed sewing, cooking, canning, gardening, being with family, going to church, and singing.

Mrs. Melton was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Oakley Melton; daughters, Emogene Nelson and Betty Snapp; and 10 brothers and sisters. [Read more…]

Michael Andrew “Andy” Tinker, 38, of Oak Ridge, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Andy was a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church and was employed by Melhorn Trucking Co.

He was a well-traveled child attending school in Germany, Kentucky, Kansas, and Tennessee while his father served in the military. He attended Oak Ridge High School, where he was a member of the Wildcats football team. Andy graduated from Coalfield High School in 1993, where he also played football. [Read more…]

Ulys was of the Baptist faith. He enjoyed fishing and restoring antique cars. Ulys was a “pure ole country boy” and loved helping others who were in need.

Charles Edward Jackson, age 66, a resident of Decatur, Tenn., passed away Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

Mr. Jackson was born Oct. 28, 1947, in Oak Ridge. He lived most of his life in the Oak Ridge and Oliver Springs area before moving to Decatur, in 2011.

Charles was a retired heavy equipment operator and truck driver who worked in both the coal and construction business before his retirement.

He served his country in the United States Army during both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received several medals, citations, campaign ribbons, and awards while serving. He was a member of the V.F.W. Post #1073 in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

Mary was a member of First Baptist Church in Briceville and enjoyed working there. Mary was also an LPN at the Lafollette Hospital for many years.

Mary Evelyn Berryman

Mary L. Berryman, age 94, formerly of Kingsport, Tenn., and Blowing Rock, N.C., died Monday, Nov. 18, 2013, at the Courtyards of Briarcliff in Oak Ridge.

Born Oct. 23, 1919, in Burnsville, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Maude W. Lyon and John Proctor Lyon.

She graduated from Queens College, Charlotte, N.C., in 1941 with a bachelor’s degree in history and married Clarence H. Berryman Jr. in June of 1941. Mr. Berryman passed away in 1999 after a loving marriage to Mary of 58 years.

Mrs. Berryman is survived by three daughters, Mary B. Hendrick of Lynchburg, Va., Kathy B. Shaulis of Oak Ridge, Margie B. Dyer and her husband Jim, of Knoxville; and one son, Clarence H. Berryman III and his wife, Mary, of Lakeland, Fla.; and five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. [Read more…]

Ida “Edna” Wheeler

Ida “Edna” Wheeler, 85, of Oak Ridge went to be with The Lord on Nov. 18, 2013.

She was born June 14, 1928, in Guntersville, Ala., the daughter of the late Hubert and Edna Bain Caston.

While attending Jacksonville State Teacher’s College, she met and married her husband Sam E. Wheeler Jr. in 1950. She and Sam both received their Bachelor of Science degrees in education. They moved to Oak Ridge in the early 1950s as both began their teaching careers. Edna retired from the Anderson County School System in 2002.

Her husband Sam passed away in 1984, after a loving marriage of 34 years. [Read more…]
