The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society is sponsoring a presentation this evening (Monday, July 22) on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s weather station located at the UT Arboretum in Oak Ridge.

The program will be led by Tilden Meyers, deputy director of the Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion Division of NOAA.  A scientist with NOAA for nearly 28 years, Meyers has worked on issues related to acid deposition, air quality, and climate change. Much of his research is focused on land-atmosphere interactions, particularly the role various land surface types (grasslands, forests, crops) play in both the water and carbon cycles and how these are affected by significant climatic events such as droughts and extreme temperature events, a press release said. Robert Craig, 69, an environmental scientist, manager and corporate officer for environmental companies in Oak Ridge for nearly 40 years, died Thursday, July 18, at his home.

Dr. Craig, of Oak Ridge, was born April 22, 1944, in Washington, D.C. He was the son of Glenn Horace Craig and Evelyn May Craig, who predeceased him. His friends remember him as a very involved and concerned scientist, and a man with a big heart.

He was retired from MSE Technology Applications, where he served as regional vice president from 2006 to 2012. He came to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory Environmental Sciences Division in 1974, where he headed the Environmental Impacts Program.

Dr. Craig was director of the Hazardous Waste Remedial Actions Program (HAZWRAP) from 1984-1994. The program, under his leadership, became a large organization supported by the U.S. Department of Energy and Work for Others program that created hundreds of jobs in Oak Ridge.

In 1994, he helped establish M4 Environmental Technology in Oak Ridge and served as executive vice president until 1997. He later served as vice president of OHM Corporation and senior vice president of Informatics Corp. [Read more…]

The Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge is holding a reverse raffle on Saturday, July 27, at Lincoln’s Sports Grille. The grand prize is $10,000.

The special guest master of ceremonies is Oak Ridge High School Football Coach Joe Gaddis.

“If anyone hasn’t had the opportunity to welcome Coach Gaddis back, this would be a great opportunity to do so,” said Ann Likens, chief volunteer officer of the Oak Ridge Unit Board. “This is always a fun event for the people that attend, and we think this year will be even more so. State approves $1.4 million worth of renovations at Norris Dam park

Tennessee officials have approved new renovation plans valued at $1.4 million at Norris Dam State Park in Anderson County, two state legislators said Friday.

The State Building Commission has approved the restoration of the Tea Room, the Linen House, and 19 cabins built in the 1930s, said representatives John Ragan, an Oak Ridge Republican, and Dennis Powers, a Jacksboro Republican. [Read more…]

Climate change to be discussed at Saturday afternoon event

An event organized by a nonprofit set up to support President Barack Obama is hosting a Saturday afternoon event meant to raise awareness about climate change.

The event—”Turn Up the Heat on Climate Change”—is scheduled from 1:30-2:30 p.m. at the planned new home of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church in front of the Joe L. Evins Federal Building. It’s been set up by Organizing for Action. [Read more…]

Two Clinton teenagers and a Jackson woman have been charged with aggravated burglary after a Shetterly Lane homeowner reported that she had been hit in the arm with a baseball bat during an alleged burglary in Anderson County on Wednesday, authorities said.

A male homeowner said he had also been hit, and his Chevy Blazer was struck and dented, arrest warrants said. [Read more…]

No fire, but Comfort Inn evacuated after heater overheats

A propane-powered heater overheated while workers were doing maintenance on the second floor of the Comfort Inn on Friday morning, setting off the hotel’s sprinkler system, authorities said.

Although there was no fire or flames, the building was evacuated after the 10:30 a.m. alarm, said Josh Waldo, Oak Ridge Fire Department assistant fire chief.

Waldo said there was water damage in four rooms on the first and second floors. He said the hotel was “back in business” by about lunchtime Friday.

The FBI is investigating a report of a man possibly trespassing at the East Tennessee Technology Park on Thursday evening, but so far, they said, it doesn’t appear he posed any danger to the former uranium-enriching site.

“I can tell you right now that there is no indication that this incident involves any kind of threat to the facility or to national security,” said Marshall Stone, supervisory special agent in the Knoxville office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. [Read more…]

‘Pandora’s Promise’ comes to Knoxville; panel discussion planned Saturday

“Pandora’s Promise,” a new film about environmentalists’ support of nuclear energy as a solution to global climate change, will be shown in a limited Knoxville engagement this week, starting today (Friday, July 19) and ending Thursday, a media advisory said.

A panel discussion at 8:45 p.m. Saturday will include representatives of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USEC, and the University of Tennessee. It will follow the 7 p.m. showing of the film. [Read more…]

Federal agents are investigating the alleged theft of a small amount of mail from the Jackson Square Branch of the Oak Ridge Post Office.

Federal agents are investigating the alleged theft of a small amount of mail from the Jackson Square Branch of the Oak Ridge Post Office, a spokesman said Friday.

The Oak Ridge police and fire departments have teamed up with the Oak Ridge Schools’ Preschool and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital to have a quarterly child seat safety checkpoint. By mid-morning Thursday, they had replaced seven expired or damaged seats.

The Oak Ridge police and fire departments have teamed up with the Oak Ridge Schools’ Preschool and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital to have a quarterly child seat safety checkpoint.

By mid-morning Thursday, the team had replaced seven expired or damaged seats.

The free safety checkpoint continued until 12:30 p.m. Friday on New York Avenue across from the preschool. Car seats were checked and installed by certified technicians.

On Friday night, Oak Ridge Fire Department Assistant Fire Chief Josh Waldo said the team had checked 72 car seats and removed 31 unsafe seats.

“Great to know that we have made 31 kids that much safer over the past two days,” Waldo said. [Read more…]
