Twenty-four indicted in second cocaine conspiracy of 300 grams or more

Twenty-four people, most of them Oak Ridge residents, have been indicted by the Anderson County Grand Jury in a second alleged cocaine conspiracy of 300 grams or more. That makes a total of 33 people who have been indicted in two separate conspiracies to allegedly manufacture, distribute, and sell 300 grams or more of cocaine last year.

There are other charges that apply to some of the suspects as well.

The indictments allege that the two conspiracies, one involving 11 people and the other involving 24, both occurred between May 14 and December 23, 2015. The indictments are being posted by the Anderson County Circuit Court Clerk following a drug suspect roundup that started Thursday and continued into Saturday in Oak Ridge. Itâ€™s not clear yet if other communities were involved, or if authorities have alleged additional conspiracies. Also, all the charges against all the defendants donâ€™t appear to be posted yet.

Two of the defendants are named in both conspiracies.

Authorities have said little about the case so far. But they plan to release more information about what they have described as a complex, multi-county criminal investigation during a Monday afternoon press conference in the Clinton office of Seventh Judicial District Attorney General Dave Clark. For members: Man charged with conspiracy to distribute cocaine, heroin, meth

A 42-year-old Anderson County man is facing federal charges of conspiring to distribute cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine after a search of a home in Claxton in July allegedly found about 230 grams of a white, crystal-like substance thought to be methamphetamine and roughly 69.5 grams of a brown powder substance suspected to be heroin, according to state and federal court records.

The defendant, Joshua Andrew Koch, has also been charged with federal financial and firearms crimes, and he has seven co-defendants in the case, although the charges vary by defendant. A seven-count federal indictment filed in U.S. District Court in Knoxville in November alleged a two-year conspiracy.

Eleven indicted in alleged conspiracy to sell 300 grams or more of cocaine

Eleven Oak Ridge and Knoxville residents were indicted May 3 on charges that they conspired to manufacture, distribute, and sell 300 grams or more of cocaine-based products last year.

The alleged cocaine conspiracy occurred betweenÂ May 14 and December 23, 2015. The indictments were filed May 3, 2016.

The 11 indicted are:

Jordan Antwan Jones, 28, Tracy Lane, in Oak Ridge;
Deangelo James Galbreath, 28, Deer Run Drive, Knoxville;
Laquan Bernard Barber, 32, Hillside Road, Oak Ridge;
Derrick Jemail Anthony, 38, South Fisk Avenue, Oak Ridge;
Christopher Shane Black, 28, West Pasadena Lane, Oak Ridge;
Nicholas Oâ€™Brien Mitchell, 32, Tracy Lane, Oak Ridge;
William Ralph Sanders Jr., 38, South Benedict Avenue, Oak Ridge;
Alfred Lee Jones, 49, Black Rock Circle, Knoxville;
Ellen Michelle Sanders, 31, Nasson Lane, Oak Ridge;
Sarah Denise Cupp, 30, Aloha Avenue, Knoxville; and
Efia Ann Hull, 38, Deer Run Drive, Knoxville.

They are each facing Class A felony charges of:

conspiracy to manufacture 300 grams or more of cocaine,
conspiracy to distribute 300 grams or more of cocaine,
conspiracy to sell 300 grams or more of cocaine, and
conspiracy to possess with the intent to manufacture, deliver, or sell 300 grams or more of cocaine.

First guilty plea in cocaine conspiracies leads to 10-year prison sentence

The first defendant to plead guilty in one of two alleged conspiracies involving close to three dozen defendants and 300 grams or more of cocaine has received a 10-year prison sentence, according to court records.

Marvel Lynette Carpenter, 45, of Oak Ridge, pleaded guilty to 10 drug-related charges in Anderson County Criminal Court on Friday, November 18.

Carpenter had been indicted May 3 in an alleged 24-person conspiracy. There was also an alleged 11-person conspiracy.Â A roundup of the cocaine conspiracy suspects started Thursday, May 5,Â as several law enforcement agencies swept through Oak Ridge and possibly other communities in what authorities described as a complex, multi-county criminal investigation. Authorities saidÂ parts of the investigation were unprecedented.

DA: Most indicted in cocaine conspiracies plead not guilty Friday

CLINTONâ€”Most of the defendants indicted in two cocaine conspiracies that were announced this month pleaded not guilty during arraignments in Anderson County Criminal Court in Clinton on Friday, officials said.

Trial dates have already been set, Seventh District Attorney General Dave Clark said. The trial date for the defendants charged in a Knoxville conspiracy is July 2017. The trial date for those charged in an Oak Ridge conspiracy is September 2017.

Officials said there were 34 conspiracy-related arraignments scheduled for 32 defendants in Anderson County Criminal Court on Friday morning.

Almost all of the defendants scheduled to appear on conspiracy-related charges on Friday were indicted by the Anderson County Grand Jury on May 3 in two alleged plots to manufacture, distribute, and sell 300 grams or more of cocaine last year. They were also indicted on charges of allegedly conspiring toÂ manufacture, distribute, and sell more than 0.5 gram of cocaine in a school zone. Each of those defendants is facing eight charges.Â One conspiracy allegedly involved 24 people, and the second allegedly involved 11.Â Two of the defendants were named in both conspiracies.

Feds, local law enforcement dismantle $17.5 million cocaine trafficking ring

Federal officials on Thursday announced they had dismantled aÂ Knoxville-based cocaine ring that is accused of trafficking $17.5 million worth of drugs and distributing more thanÂ five kilograms of cocaine and 280 grams of crack cocaine.

A federal grand jury returned a 58-count indictment on Dec. 3 against 21 Knoxville residents,Â charging them with conspiracy to distribute cocaine and cocaine base, money laundering, and gun charges, U.S.Â Attorney William C. Killian said in a press release.

The 21Â members of the alleged drug ring appeared in court before U.S. magistrate judges this week and entered pleas of not guilty to the charges in the indictment, Killian said. All of them have been ordered held without bond pending trial, which has been set for Feb. 11 in U.S. District Court in Knoxville.

Among the law enforcement agencies participating in the investigation were theÂ Anderson County Sheriffâ€™s Department,Â Clinton Police Department,Â Oak Ridge Police Department, andÂ Roane County Sheriffâ€™s Department, Killian said. [Read more…]

For members: More than 1,300 suspected pills allegedly found during arrest, search

More than 1,000 pills of suspected controlled substances, three bags of suspected ketamine, pill presses, and unidentified precursor chemicals were found during a search of a home in northeast Oak Ridge last week, according to Anderson County law enforcement officers. Two people who live at the home, a man and a woman, were arrested after the search.

The search by the Seventh Judicial District Crime Task Force on Tuesday followed an arrest near the home on Andover Circle in March, when a Knox County woman was detained on a sidewalk near the home with more than 100 pills and other suspected drugs, according to Oak Ridge police.

Including the arrest in March and search and arrests last week, more than 1,300 pills total of suspected controlled substances were found in or near the home, according to lists that officers included in arrest warrants filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court in Oak Ridge. The controlled substances included suspected stimulants and hallucinogens, and drugs used to treat anxiety, panic attacks, and pain.

William C. “Bill” Killian

KNOXVILLEâ€”William C. Killian, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, has submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama effective December 5. He is joining a national law firm.

Killian was sworn into office October 4, 2010, after he was nominated by Obama and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate. He served on the following subcommittees of the Attorney Generalâ€™s Advisory Committee: Terrorism and National Security, Civil Rights, and Healthcare Fraud Working Group, a press release said.

Federal cases that originate in Oak Ridge are heard in the Eastern District of Tennessee, which has offices in Knoxville and uses courtrooms there. Among the cases heard there in the past few years, for example, are the case of three anti-nuclear weapons activities who broke into the Y-12 National Security Complex in 2012, the trademark lawsuit against Lake City when it changed its name to Rocky Top, and a methamphetamine manufacturing conspiracy in Anderson County.
