The Tennessee Board of Regents on Friday approved maintenance fee and tuition recommendations at its universities and community colleges.
The proposed increases for students taking 15 credit hours would amount to an extra $102 per semester for community college students.
The TBR also approved a new associate of applied science program, a collaborative surgical technology program through Walters State and Roane State community colleges. [Read more…]
The community is invited to attend the third annual Nurturing and Safe World Child Advocacy Seminar on Tuesday. The seminar will be held at the Roane State Community College City Room on the Oak Ridge campus.
Robert May, of ORPD Chaplains; Annette Beebe, of Anderson County Task Force on Domestic Violence; David Kitts, of Knox Police Family Crimes Unit; Margaret Durgin, of the Child Advocacy Center; and others will speak on the issue of domestic violence as it relates to the children who are affected by this challenging problem. John Thornton of Clinton graduated from Roane State Community College’s Advanced Materials Training and Education Center, or AMTEC, a year ago.
Today, he works in one of the most innovative places in the country.
“It’s been an amazing experience,” Thornton said. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a part of this and hopefully develop a career out of it.”
Thornton is one of 13 AMTEC trainees interning at Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Carbon Fiber Technology Facility. The $35 million plant is a new advanced manufacturing facility designed to reduce the cost of carbon fiber—a critical material for efficient, lightweight vehicles, next-generation wind turbines, and a wide array of other consumer and industrial products. Zack Sterner has been named head baseball coach at Roane State Community College.
Zack Sterner has been named Roane State Community College’s head baseball coach.
Sterner served as an assistant coach for two years under Head Coach David Lane, who has resigned to take a full-time teaching position at Roane State.
“I am excited about the future and challenges of the baseball program,” Sterner said.
Before coming to Roane State, Sterner played college ball at Walters State and at Tennessee Wesleyan College and went on to play professional baseball in the Philadelphia Phillies organization for three years and the River City Rascals of Frontier League Independent Professional Baseball for two years. An AAUW luncheon meeting today features a fun program, the introduction of college scholarship recipients, and the induction of new officers, a press release said.
AAUW member Peggy Emmett, who has won many regional and national dance competitions, and her dance partner Sam Gordon will give a program on dance, the release said. They will perform some of the routines that Emmett, with her interest in theater, has created, the release said.

Oak Ridge City Council member Trina Baughn has proposed that the city sell Centennial Golf Course, and terminate the lease agreement with the Chamber of Commerce and sell the property.
Those proposals would convert city-owned assets into taxable properties, Baughn said.
Baughn has also asked the seven-member Council to consider setting up a team that could negotiate voluntary payment-in-lieu-of-taxes agreements with tax-exempt organizations that “are most able to afford paying for city services that are currently paid for by the taxpayer.” Those organizations could include Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge Utility District, Tech 2020, Roane State Community College, and the University of Tennessee, Baughn said in a May 5 e-mail to Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson and City Clerk Diana Stanley. Roane State Community College’s Continuing Healthcare Education Department is accepting sign-ups for its Wilderness First Responder course May 13-20.
The Wilderness First Responder, held at Camp Wesley Woods in Townsend, provides extensive training in handling medical emergencies in the wilderness. The class is designed for those who operate extensively in the outdoors, such as outdoors enthusiasts, wilderness guides, environmental educators, and missionaries.
Roane State Community College will host an open house for homeschool students, private school students, and their families from 6 to 8 p.m. today.
