Four Oak Ridge students will compete in the Bijou Awards in January.

The Fourth Annual Bijou Awards will showcase the talent of high school students in and around Knoxville. The 2016 Bijou Awards Gala is on January 16 at the Bijou Theatre in downtown Knoxville.

Oak Ridge High School seniors Treston Henderson and Jacob Moreno will both compete in the male singing category.

Sarah Hepler, an eight-grader at Robertsville Middle School, and Marian Vacaliuc, a seventh-grader at Jefferson Middle School, will compete in the rising star category. [Read more…]

Man charged with kidnapping, aggravated robbery after allegedly using gun to steal from ex-girlfriend

An Oak Ridge man was charged with kidnapping and aggravated robbery after he allegedly held a gun to the back of his ex-girlfriend’s head before stealing her cell phones and $1,200 in cash, authorities said.

The robbery was reported at about 9:16 a.m. Friday, December 11, at a home on Northwestern Avenue.

The ex-girlfriend told Oak Ridge Police Department Officer Kevin Merritt that she awoke to a loud noise and found Dmantiz A. Bowser, 21, in the back bedroom. She asked him what he was doing, according to warrants filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court.

“She said the defendant then pulled a small black gun out of his front pocket, grabbed her by her right arm and twisted it behind her back,” the warrants said. “She said he then shoved her face down in the couch, putting his knee on her back, and putting the pistol to the back of her head. The day after he was found unresponsive in a bathroom, with a syringe on the floor and suspected heroin in his jacket pocket, a 27-year-old Oak Ridge man allegedly attacked his 81-year-old grandfather, pushed him down, and stole his wallet, authorities said.

Trenton Johnson of Briarwood Drive was found on his back and unresponsive on a bathroom floor, lying between a toilet and bathtub, at the Briarwood Drive home on Saturday, December 19, Oak Ridge Police Department Officer Kevin M. Merritt said.

A syringe was on the floor next to Johnson, Merritt said. On the edge of the bathtub, there was a pack of cigarettes, lighter, and metal spoon, the officer said. [Read more…]

Whether at home, work, or play, touchscreen devices have quickly become one of the hallmarks of the modern world.

Phones, tablets, computers, and even televisions use the technology, which relies on substances known as transparent conductive films. All but a small fraction of those films are made from a particular class of oxides that, although they do the job very effectively, contain rare and costly elements.

Now, thanks to a breakthrough led by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, that problem could soon be in the past.

“The electronics industry relies heavily on the use of Indium metal for the many situations requiring the right balance of transparency and current carrying ability,” said UT Professor Ramki Kalyanaraman. “While Indium is scarce, our new material contains elements that are far more abundant such as iron, terbium, and dysprosium.” [Read more…]

The City of Oak Ridge has extended elections for six boards, commissions, and committees. Applications are due in the Oak Ridge City Clerk’s Office by 5 p.m. Monday, January 11.

The extended elections apply to the Anderson County Community Action Commission, Personnel Advisory Board, Senior Advisory Board, Trade Licensing Board, Traffic Safety Advisory Board, and Secret City Festival Board of Directors. [Read more…]

Free Medical Clinic accepting new patients in January

The Free Medical Clinic will have openings for new patients beginning January 4.

To qualify for free medical care at the clinic, patients must live in Anderson, Morgan, or Roane County, have no medical insurance of any kind, and have a household income at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, which is:

Ken Senter, an Advanced Placement United States history teacher at Oak Ridge High School, has been named Star 102.1 Educator of the Month. The award was announced December 2.

The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society has a morning hike on New Year’s Day. New Year’s Day is Friday, January 1.

The hike is for everyone that wants to start 2016 “on the right foot,” a press release said.

The walk will begin at 9 a.m. New Year’s Day at the Arboretum Shelter “where you will be greeted by fellow hikers and offered coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks,” the release said.

Sunset Rotary expands Da Vinci Arts, Science Fair to include middle school grades

In 2016, the Oak Ridge Sunset Rotary Club will expand its annual Da Vinci Arts and Science Fair to include middle school grades.

Previously, the fair has been limited to third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students.

The middle-school fair will be held January 23-24, 2016, at the New Hope Center in Oak Ridge. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony in the New Hope Center auditorium at 4 p.m. on Sunday, January 24, preceded at 3 p.m. by an open house when entries will be available for viewing, a press release said. All participants, parents, teachers, and the public are invited to attend.

Waste Connections announces new holiday schedule for 2016

Waste Connections Incorporated has announced significant changes to its holiday pick-up schedule of garbage and recyclables within the City of Oak Ridge, a press release said.

Effective January 1, 2016, the only holidays that Waste Connections will be closed and not servicing the residents of Oak Ridge will be on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If one of these holidays falls on a weekend, then there will be no service day change. If the holiday falls during the week, then refuse and recyclables will be picked up one day later. [Read more…]

The new traffic light in front of Oak Ridge High School on Oak Ridge Turnpike will start operating on Wednesday, December 30.

The stoplight has been operating in a temporary, flashing mode since the week of December 14.

City officials want to start operating the stoplight while school is out, said Roger Flynn, director of the Oak Ridge Public Works Department.

The Oak Ridge City Council approved a contract to install the stoplight in a 4-3 vote in April. [Read more…]

FARRAGUT—Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as “Obamacare,” and he also called for abolishing the Internal Revenue Service during a stop at Farragut High School on Tuesday.

Cruz spoke for about 30 minutes in the Farragut High gym before a standing-room-only crowd of roughly 2,000 people, who helped him celebrate his 45th birthday with a birthday song and cake. The East Tennessee rally was held a little more than two months before the March 1 “SEC primary.”

A first-term Texas senator, Cruz said he plans to rescind every unconstitutional executive order, ask the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate Planned Parenthood, end the persecution of religious liberties, and “rip to shreds” the Iranian nuclear deal, which he called “catastrophic.”

Cruz also said the U.S. Department of Education should be abolished, and welfare benefits should end for people who are in the country illegally. He pledged to protect the constitutional right to keep and bear arms, called for killing the Environmental Protection Agency, and jokingly compared regulators to locusts, with a difference being that pesticides can be used to control locusts.
