Juvenile Judge Fisher taking new job, leaving chancellor’s race

Anderson County Juvenile Court Judge Brandon Fisher is withdrawing from the race for Anderson County chancellor because he is joining a nonprofit mental health provider in Pennsylvania in September, a press release said.

Fisher will be the assistant general counsel at the national headquarters of NHS Human Services Inc., the release said. The September start will allow him to finish his term, which ends in August.

On Friday morning, the Anderson County school system celebrated the kickoff of a $9.7 million energy efficiency project that will make significant improvements to all 17 county schools, all with the aim of improving the learning environment, reducing energy use and, subsequently, the cost of energy across the system.

The Anderson County Commission recently approved a 15-year contract with Energy Systems Group—or ESG—to design and implement a $9.7 million energy efficiency and building modernization project throughout Anderson County Schools. All 17 county schools will receive energy improvements, including upgrades to the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning—or HVAC—systems and electrical systems as well as energy-efficient lights, water conservation measures, and advanced energy management controls—including sensors that will detect when a room is occupied and adjust heating and lighting automatically, and new suspended ceiling systems. Officials say little about Monday hearing on Y-12, Pantex contract

Officials said little about the federal hearing held Monday to discuss the consolidated but contested contract to manage the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge and Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas.

The hearing is related to the protest filed by Nuclear Production Partners LLC, or NP2, which has contested the decision to award the contract to Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC of Reston, Va. Originally announced in January 2013, the contract could be worth up to $22.8 billion over a decade.

The hearing had originally been scheduled for Jan. 29, but it was rescheduled. [Read more…]

Sewer rehab work continues this week

More rehabilitation work of the city’s sewer collection pipes is scheduled to continue this week.

The work is being done by Hurst Excavating and Morgan Contracting under contract with the city of Oak Ridge. It includes rehabilitating sewer collection pipes within city easements in yards and in roadways, a press release said.

Residents should already have received color-coded letters and door hangers (orange for Hurst Excavating and purple for Morgan Contracting) providing general information and each contractors’ contact information. [Read more…]

Two road closures this week for sewer rehab work

Two roads will be temporarily closed this week so three sewer lines can be replaced.

The work is part of a project to repair Oak Ridge’s gravity wastewater collection system. It’s being done by Hurst Construction LLC under a contract with the Oak Ridge Public Works Department.

On Monday and Tuesday, West Arrowwood Road will be closed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Arkansas Avenue, South Alabama Road, Cedar Road, and California Avenue may be used as detours. [Read more…]

Clinton Library offers free programs in February

The Clinton Public Library will be offering a variety of free programs in the month of February in addition to its regular programming. These programs include classes for adults, a Valentine’s Party for teens, and an exhibit for the entire family.

On Monday, Feb. 3, the library will offer a Valentine’s-themed craft class at two times: 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. Adults and high-schoolers are invited to join Janie Wolfenbarger in making a heart-shaped paper wreath, the perfect homemade gift for the Valentine in your life. Limited seating is available for these classes, so register today by calling the library at (865) 457-0519.

A free Computer Basics Class will be offered by the library on Friday, Feb. 28, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. This class will teach a basic understanding of computer hardware and peripherals, Microsoft Office, Adobe Reader, the Internet, and search engines. TDOT: Lewallen Bridge in Clinton slated for replacement

The Tennessee Department of Transportation will be replacing the Lewallen Bridge—known as “the green bridge” to locals—that connects Clinton and South Clinton on Highway 25W within the next couple of years.

Clinton city officials met last Friday with TDOT representatives to learn more about the project and its tentative schedule. TDOT spokesman Mark Nagi in an email said that the new bridge will be realigned to the park side of the bridge, which is upstream from the current bridge, so that the state can avoid “the costly acquisition of several homes” downstream of the bridge in the other side. Weston Wamp, a Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Tennessee’s Third District, announced the first members of his campaign staff and leadership team this week.

The group includes three notable Chattanooga entrepreneurs as well as a former staffer for the incumbent, Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, and a 25-year veteran of the Chattanooga Police Department, a press release said.

The Committee to Elect Lauren Biloski for Anderson County Juvenile Judge is planning two public events in Oak Ridge and Clinton to allow voters to meet her, a press release said.

The Oak Ridge event is Thursday, Jan. 30, at Centennial Village Apartments on Edgemoor Road from 4-6:30 p.m., and the Clinton event will be at the Clinton Community Center from 4-6:30 p.m. on Feb. 4.

Roane County Property Assessor David Morgan recently received an outstanding new member award from the Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers.

Morgan received the award during the TNAAO Regional Educational Seminars on Jan. 23. It was presented on behalf of the TNAAO by Executive Director Will Denami.

“The Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers proudly recognizes David Morgan for joining in the leadership of this organization in the service of Roane County and the assessment profession in Tennessee and names him Outstanding New Member 2013,” said 2013 Tennessee Association of Assessing Officers President Betty Burchett. Clinton city judge running for Anderson County chancellor

Michael Farley, a local attorney and Clinton city judge, is seeking election as Anderson County chancellor.

The seat is now held by William E. Lantrip, who is retiring at the end of his term.

Farley is a Clinton native who graduated from Clinton High School in 1988. He obtained both his bachelor’s degree in business administration and Doctor of Jurisprudence degrees from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Farley is also a graduate of the Tennessee Law Enforcement Training Academy, where he graduated first in his class, receiving the “Most Outstanding Officer Award.”

Prior to earning his law degree, Farley worked for both the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and the Clinton Police Department, where he also served as a volunteer firefighter. Farley has served the City of Clinton as a council member, and while serving, he donated his council salary to the Clinton City Schools. [Read more…]

U.S. Rep. Chuck Fleischmann has retained seats on all three of his House Appropriations subcommittees, including the Energy and Water Subcommittee, which is important to work in Tennessee’s Third District, a press release said.

The congressman said House Appropriations Committee Chairman Hal Rogers announced the subcommittee assignments on Wednesday.

“I take my role as an appropriator very seriously and am thrilled to continue my membership on the Homeland Security, Labor Health and Human Services, and Energy and Water subcommittees,” said Fleischmann, a Tennessee Republican whose district includes Oak Ridge. “We made great progress over the past year, and I look forward to continuing my fight for responsible spending levels. As Tennessee’s sole House appropriator, I will continue to keep the needs of the state in mind throughout all of my work on the committee.” [Read more…]
