On Monday, May 8, eleven local restaurants will donate a portion of their sales to support Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties (ADFAC).

Dine & Donate Mondays are always an easy way to treat loved ones to a special meal that also gives back to the community, a press release said.

“With Mother’s Day quickly approaching, Dine & Donate is a fantastic way to celebrate early with the mom(s) in your life!” the press release said.

There is a Jeep Jamboree at Windrock Park north of Oliver Springs this weekend, and close to 250 participants in 125 Jeeps from 26 states are reported to be attending.

The Tennessee Mountains Jeep Jamboree is an event inspired by local coordinator Bob Yarborough. Participants kicked off their three days of off-road trail adventures Thursday morning at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge with a hearty welcome, discussion of trail guides and ground rules, and a review of the schedule of events that includes an awards dinner, the Anderson County Mayor’s Office said.

Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank and Yarbrough welcomed the participants at AMSE on Thursday.

According to organizers, “the mountain vistas create a dynamic back drop for this scenic” jamboree, the Mayor’s Office said. Frank said she welcomed participants to Anderson County and encouraged them to have fun and enjoy the beauty of Anderson County and East Tennessee.

Cast your vote in ‘Dream It. Do It.’ middle school competition

CLINTON—The videos are in, and it is now time to vote in Anderson County’s “Dream It. Do It.” middle school competition. The program is in its second year and has grown from four to six schools, including two from the Oak Ridge school system.

“Dream It. Do It.” is sponsored by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, Anderson County Schools, Oak Ridge Schools, and Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC, or CNS, the managing contractor at Y-12 National Security Complex. It is designed to bring student awareness of job opportunities in advanced manufacturing, a press release said.

Using GoPro cameras provided by CNS, six teams of eighth-graders were paired with area industries to create videos to tell the companies’ stories. These videos are then posted online for public voting. Each winning team member receives a GoPro camera, also provided by CNS.

This year’s participant teams included: Clinton Middle School and Aisin, Jefferson Middle School and Protomet, Lake City Middle School and Techmer PM, Norris Middle School and Eagle Bend, Norwood Middle School and Clayton Homes, and Robertsville Middle School and SL America. [Read more…]

Anderson County Chamber of Commerce has job fair in Oak Ridge on Thursday

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce will host a Job Fair to recruit employees for local businesses and industries on Thursday, April 27, from 3-7 p.m. at New Hope Center in Oak Ridge. This one-day event allows job seekers to connect face-to-face with local businesses and industries seeking employees, a press release said.

Attendees may be able to submit resumes, complete applications, schedule interviews, and make contacts for future job openings. Admission and parking are free, the press release said.

The Little Ponderosa Zoo in Clinton has flooded. The damage is unknown, but the animals are safe and dry, the zoo said Wednesday afternoon.

“We have been hit with a lot of water today,” The Little Ponderosa Zoo said. “We have been able to keep our animals dry, but the damage to our bridges and buildings like our concession stand is for now unknown. We will know more once the water has receded.”

Interior Department protects 75,000 acres from surface mining, including in Anderson County

A federal decision announced Wednesday designates about 75,000 acres of mountain ridge lines, including in Anderson County, as unsuitable for surface coal mining operations, a press release said.

The decision, which affects mountains in East Tennessee, was announced by Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

“Today’s action helps protect a spectacular area of eastern Tennessee that is critical to the region’s tourism and outdoor recreation economy, provides valuable fish and wildlife habitat, and supports a healthy watershed,” the press release said.

The release said the Interior Department designated the mountain ridge lines as unsuitable for surface coal mining at the request of the State of Tennessee. Besides Anderson County, the other affected counties include Campbell, Scott, and Morgan. [Read more…]

Deadline to register is Dec. 12 

Clinton’s traditional Christmas Parade of bands, floats, and many other processional entries will begin at 6 p.m. December 17, a press release said. This year’s theme is “Once Upon A Christmas.”

Businesses, churches, schools, and other marching groups are encouraged to register and participate in the parade. There is no parade entry fee this year. The deadline to register is 4:30 p.m. Monday, December 12. There will be no late entries, the press release said.

Entry forms may be picked up at the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce office located at 245 North Main Street, Suite 200, in Clinton. There will be free hot dogs and prize giveaways for those who drop in a business card, a press release said.

The press release said Atomic City Computers has been in business since 2010 providing computer repair for residential and business customers, as well as mobile device repair, custom built desktop systems for gaming, office, and scientific needs, and onsite repair services for businesses. Roane State, AC Chamber, CNS Y-12 to host Manufacturing Day celebration, Dream It/Do It kickoff

Area middle school students will learn about creative, high-tech careers in manufacturing as part of a Manufacturing Day celebration on Friday, October 21, at Roane State Community College’s training facility in Clinton.

The college is teaming up with the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce and CNS Y-12 to host the event, titled the Dream It/Do It Manufacturing Showcase: Think, Create, Build. The event begins at 9:30 a.m., and it will include tours and equipment demonstrations. The public is invited.
