Congratulations to Norwood Elementary School students Ronnie Rigney, Kristin Lindsay, Landan Lowery, and Jason Bolden. They have been selected as Classworks All-Stars. This honor is only given to 500 students nationwide. This award is for math and reading achievement on the Classworks program sponsored by Anderson County Schools.

Stephen C. Malone, director of the Homeland Defense and Security Information Analysis Center in Oak Ridge, has been selected as a 2014 Distinguished Member of the Chemical Corps of the U.S. Army Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear School, or CBRN.
The Distinguished Member award is extended to living members who served the Corps in their professional lives and continue to serve it in their personal lives, a press release said. Malone has been involved in CBRN activities since the mid-1970s as an officer in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps and later, in private industry positions. He has been an IIa employee and director of HDIAC since June 2013.
HDIAC is managed by Information International Associates for the U.S. Department of Defense. [Read more…]

Twenty-two members of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church held a sunrise service on Easter morning at the site of their new building at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
While the building won’t be finished until this fall, members received permission from Hickory Construction to use the site for this special purpose, provided they each wore hard-hats. So, it was with a light spirit that the small group celebrated the in-breaking of a new light, of new life, and the resurrection of Jesus. [Read more…]

CLINTON—The University of Tennessee honored Anderson County Circuit Court Clerk Tyler Mayes as a certified public administrator at a Capstone event at Montgomery Bell State Park on April 11, a press release said.
Mayes serves as clerk for the Criminal and Circuit Court, both General Sessions courts, and the Juvenile Court of Anderson County. He has worked and served in the Anderson County court system for more than a decade, the press release said.
To achieve the designation, Mayes completed 80 credit hours in the County Officials Certificate Training Program (COCTP). The program is administered by the UT County Technical Assistance Service and is available to every county employee in the state. [Read more…]

The Center for Public Safety Excellence has notified three members of the Oak Ridge Fire Department that they have received national accreditation.
The Center for Public Safety Excellence Inc. is a nonprofit organization that, for more than a decade, has helped local public safety agencies around the world streamline and improve the services they provide their communities, a press release said. Through its individual commissions, CPSE provides a host of programs including accreditation for fire and emergency service agencies and professional designations for senior-level fire and emergency service officers.
Capt. Charlie Elliott, Capt. Brandon Payne, and Firefighter Engineer Jordan Alcorn have received notification from the Center for Public Safety Excellence that they have been approved for the designation of fire officer, or FO. [Read more…]

CLINTON—Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank recently displayed the reports and artwork of the second-grade classes of Amy Ogle and Jamie Linkes from Andersonville Elementary School.
After a recent visit by the mayor as part of the second grade’s focus on government, the students worked on a project where they talked about what they would do if they were mayor.
“I promised the students I would post their reports if their teachers brought them to me,” Frank said. “I’m excited Ms. Ogle brought their reports and artwork so we (could) share them with folks here in the Courthouse. Brian Hunt, a candidate for Anderson County Juvenile Court judge, recently made a donation to the Oak Ridge Wildcats boys’ basketball team.
The boys team traveled to Murfreesboro in March to play in the state championship game for the first time in 51 years. The Wildcats lost 60-58 to the Blackman Blaze 60-58 in the championship game, but they were named 2014 State Runner-Up.
“I want to acknowledge and commend the team and their head coach for all their hard work this year and let them know their community is proud of their efforts,” Hunt said in a press release.

Michael Farley, a candidate for Anderson County chancellor, made a $500 donation to the Oak Ridge High School boys’ basketball team in March to help them travel to the state tournament.
“The donation was extremely helpful in covering our cost, and myself and the team are very appreciative,” Coach Aaron Green said in a press release.
In the press release, Farley said he has always been a big donor to athletics in Anderson County, supporting individual athletes and teams at the optimist, middle, and high school levels for more than 20 years. [Read more…]

Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands, Tennessee’s largest nonprofit law firm, has welcomed Michelle Darsey to the Oak Ridge office location as receptionist.
Darsey brings more than 10 years of client service and office support experience to her new role. She has served in public interest positions through the AmeriCorps/Volunteers in Service to America, or VISTA, program as a homeless outreach specialist for United Neighborhood Health Services and as a prisoner reentry liaison for the San Diego County District Attorney’s office.
“Michelle is a service-oriented individual who is dedicated to her work and to helping others,” said Janet Mynatt, managing attorney for the Oak Ridge office of Legal Aid Society. “She previously excelled in a legal office setting and we are certain she will do the same with Legal Aid Society. Leadership Anderson County Class of 2014, a program of the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, and members of the Leadership Anderson County board of directors, visited Nashville for their state government trip in March.
The class, shown at left with Rep. John Ragan, Sen. Randy McNally, and Rep. Dennis Powers, participated in a mock session, visited the Tennessee Fusion Center, toured the Capitol and Supreme Court, and met with Comptroller Justin P. Wilson and Secretary of State Tre Hargett.

Despite heavy rain Saturday, about 21 volunteers turned out to clean up trash in Highland View.

Eight employees at the Y‑12 National Security Complex recently earned a master’s in industrial engineering with a concentration in engineering management at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville.
Students pursuing this degree complete the 16-course, four-semester program as an ensemble, attending all-day Friday classes not held on the university campus.
“This particular program is one of the success stories of the Y‑12/University of Tennessee Partnership,” reported Debbie Reed, Y‑12’s UT liaison director. “But setting up the program was the easy part. Being a nontraditional student isn’t easy. Anyone who works full-time and still has the discipline and drive to take on college studies deserves special recognition. Putting in a 4/10 workweek and then taking another full day of classes—along with doing the homework that comes with those classes—that’s a lot of extra effort.” [Read more…]
