David Vudragovich

With the changes to health care over the past few years, there are only certain times when you can enroll in or change health plans.

The open enrollment period, or OEP, ends February 15, which affects most people.

Special enrollment periods, or SEPs, can include the birth of a child, marriage, divorce, some job changes, or moving out of the service area, and they allow for a 30 or 60 day change of coverage.

But if you are not enrolled by February 15 and decide you want coverage at some other point during the year, you will need a SEP or you will not be able to enroll in a qualified health care plan.

If you do not have a qualified health care plan, you may have a penalty when you file your 2015 taxes in 2016. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Animal Shelter

The Oak Ridge Animal Shelter on Belgrade Road is pictured above.

The Anderson County Operations Committee has endorsed setting up a task force to examine the possibility of an animal shelter in the county, a press release said.

That should be good news for Oak Ridge, where there has been at least some concern about the housing of animals from outside Oak Ridge at the city’s animal shelter and the costs of doing so.

“Anderson County has had a strong, long-standing relationship with the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter over the years and continues that solid, working partnership,” Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank said in a press release. “However, as their shelter has moved more towards the housing and adoption of animals, the available contracted space for county animals has diminished. Oak Ridge Reservation Waste Disposal

Submitted

The U.S. Department of Energy has made great strides in cleaning up the Oak Ridge Reservation of outdated and contaminated buildings and soils. But since more work has been added to the original cleanup scope, additional landfill space is needed to handle the additional waste.

DOE has proposed an area near the current low-level waste landfill on Bear Creek Road near the Y-12 National Security Complex.

Join us for a presentation on DOE’s proposal to build a new facility that will handle all waste expected to be generated by the remaining cleanup of the Oak Ridge Reservation. [Read more…]

The TBI is investigating an officer-involved shooting in Roane County after a police chase ended with a sheriff’s deputy firing his weapon through a car’s windshield.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said the shooting occurred at the Airport Road exit off I-40 West.

A Roane County sheriff’s deputy clocked a Hyundai traveling at more than 100 miles an hour on Highway 27 in Harriman. The deputy turned on his lights and sirens and gave chase, but instead of pulling over, the car entered I-40 westbound and the pursuit continued to the exit ramp at mile marker 340. [Read more…]
