The Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association is performing Tchaikovsky’s “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, November 18, and Sunday, November 19, at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.

Directed by Molly Koon Quist along with assistant director Sharon Nicklow-Cousins and assistant Sarah Jett, “The Nutcracker” offers artistic entertainment for family members of all ages.

“We have so many talented dancers in East Tennessee,” said Wendie Aurin, assistant production manager. “We are excited to have them showcase their creativity in such a classic ballet.”

Courtney Walker, Fancisco Aguilar, and Murillo Barbosa of the Georgia Ballet, as well as Howard Merlin of the Boston Ballet as Drosselmeyer, will join the talented cast, a press release said. Frank Murphy from Classic Hits 93.1 WNOX will also make a guest appearance. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Symphony performs Saturday

The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra will perform this Saturday. The “Baroque to Modern” concert will feature Telemann’s “Don Quixote,” Stravinsky’s “Pulcinella,” and Tchaikovsky’s “Serenade for Strings.”

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, November 21, at First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. The church is at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The concert is free to all students 18 and under, and special discount tickets are available to young adults, 19-29.

“It will be a fun, family-friendly concert—all are welcome!” organizers said. [Read more…]

Celebrate love, ‘Romeo and Juliet’ with Valentine’s Day at the Symphony

William Shakespeare once wrote, “If music be the food of love, play on.”

It is in that spirit that the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will present “Valentine’s Day at the Symphony” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, February 14, at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.

The professional Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Maestro Dan Allcott, will present music by Cole Porter, Prokofiev’s “Romeo and Juliet,” and Tchaikovsky’s “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture.”

They will also be joined by the Oak Ridge Chorus, led by chorus conductor Seth Maples, for Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music.” [Read more…]

Concert debut: Lefkowitz conducts ORCO in Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian, Sibelius

New Music Director Gabriel Lefkowitz will conduct the Oak Ridge Community Orchestra in September performances of compositions by Tchaikovsky, Khachaturian, and Sibelius.

During the September 13 concert, the orchestra will play the “Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture” by Tchaikovsky, “Adagio from Spartacus” by Khachaturian, and “The Karelia Suite” by Sibelius, a press release said.

“This is some of the finest orchestra music one can listen to,” the release said.

The free ORCO concert will be performed in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 13. It will be Lefkowitz’s debut with the ORCO as music director and conductor. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association is inviting the community to their fairy tale world with Tchaikovsky’s “Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan Lake” in April.

Professional guest artists Tory Morton and Erin-Elizabeth Morton will perform as Prince Seigfried and Odette in “Swan Lake.” Special guest Frank Murphy of Classic Hits 93.1 WNOX will portray the King in “Sleeping Beauty.”

Tickets are $20 for adults and $15 for seniors. Student tickets are $10, but ORCBA is proud to once again participate in the Penny 4 the Arts program, which allows up to three students to attend for a penny each with a paid adult or senior. Tickets may be purchased at the door, at www.orcba.org, or at Flutterfly’s Consignment in the Manhattan Place Shopping Center. All productions are open seating. [Read more…]

Holiday concert on Sunday features Oak Ridge Symphony, Chorus, Sound Company

The Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra will join Sound Company and the Oak Ridge Chorus to “ring in” the holiday season during a concert on Sunday.

The concert starts at 3 p.m. Sunday in the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.

The holiday concert is presented by the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.

The orchestra, under the direction of Dan Allcott, will open the concert with the “Hanukah Festival Overture,” composed by Knoxville’s own Lucas Richman. Music from “Mass of the Children,” and “Colors of Christmas,” will feature the children and the civic choruses. The performance will be dedicated to the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Connecticut last year. [Read more…]

ORCBA celebrates 50th season, Tchaikovsky

In recognition of its 50th season, the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet Association is celebrating Tchaikovsky, opening its season this weekend with the annual production of “The Nutcracker.”

The season will end in April with “Sleeping Beauty” and “Swan Lake.”

The University of Tennessee Chamber Orchestra will perform The Nutcracker this weekend with ORCBA.
