Children currently in first through 12th grade who enjoy music and performing are encouraged to come to the Grove Theater (High Places Community Church) in Oak Ridge to audition for Sound Company, the children’s show choir of Oak Ridge, on Saturday, October 19. Auditioners should prepare a song to perform, a press release said. You can sign up to audition and find out more at the Sound Company website, www.soundcompanytn.net.

Sound Company is comprised of approximately 100 children who come from all over East Tennessee. They present concerts featuring a wide range of music, from pop to Broadway to classical to multicultural, incorporating choreography and costumes into many of their pieces, and they have travelled regularly to Switzerland, where they have a “sister” choir, and to other places such as New York City. Sound Company is divided by age into four groups, and is led by Katy Wolfe and Terry Silver-Alford, both on staff at the University of Tennessee in the vocal music/musical theater departments and both regular performers in the area.

Sound Company Songs of Seuss

The Sound Company Children’s Choir of Oak Ridge presents Songs of Seuss in historic Grove Theater this weekend. Performances are scheduled for Friday, May 8, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, May 9, at 3 p.m.

“The rhetorical dexterity of Theodor Seuss Geisel, which inspired the stylings of ‘Seussical the Musical’ on Broadway, is inspiring our young performers today to stretch their imaginations and creativity,” said Sound Company director Katy Wolfe.

“Sound Company vocalists, from elementary to high school ages, will be singing selections from ‘Seussical,’ exploring new ways to express visually and aurally a sense of wonder at the world around them,” Wolfe said in a press release. “Just like the original works of Dr. Seuss, these songs can entertain young and old alike!”

During the performance, you may recognize a certain cat in a red striped hat, the press release said. [Read more…]

To the Editor:

The Historical Grove Theater, 123 Randolph Road, would like to acknowledge the abundant blessing received last Friday at the “Oak Ridge Has Talent” Showcase Event.

We extend our thanks to the 10 local performance groups who donated their time and talent to the lucky audience. Everyone could feel the special spirit of community as we all came together to support an important part of our history. From the Sound Company kids at the beginning, all the way to the Ridge City Ramblers ending the concert with two great sing-along pieces with the audience.

We also want to thank the many volunteers who contributed their support and gifts, not seen on stage. Every donation of time, talent, financial support, and hard work is greatly appreciated.
