June Mildred Boone

June Mildred Boone, age 84, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, passed in peace Thursday, April 4, at home with family.

June was born in Oak Hill, W.V., in 1928 and moved to Oak Ridge with her family in 1943. She graduated in 1946 from Oak Ridge High School.

June was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church. As a member of the East Tennessee Writer’s Group, she published articles in children’s magazines, newspapers, and Oak Ridge history books, winning awards with her short stories, plays, and articles. In her later years, she enjoyed gardening and reading. [Read more…]

DOE Environmental Management has public meeting to discuss cleanup funding, strategy

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office of Environmental Management, or EM, is holding a public meeting to discuss the program’s fiscal year 2015 budget and cleanup priorities. The workshop, featuring Oak Ridge’s senior EM leadership, is scheduled from 4-6 p.m. April 23 at Pollard Auditorium.

“As taxpayer stewards, I think these public meetings are a responsible practice that increase transparency and explain our decision process,” said Mark Whitney, Oak Ridge’s Environmental Management manager. “These meetings also provide a forum for residents and stakeholders to voice their opinions, suggestions, and concerns about our vision.” [Read more…]

U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, also voted Wednesday against the bipartisan Toomey-Manchin amendment to expand background checks for potential gun purchasers.

Like U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, Corker said he supported what is known as the Grassley amendment.

“Like most Americans, I want to keep firearms out of the hands of criminals and dangerous mentally ill people,” Corker said in a press release Wednesday evening. “Today, I supported the Grassley amendment to enhance mental health reporting requirements, which I believe is the central issue, and to improve the background check system in a way that is not an impediment to Second Amendment rights. The three protesters who broke into the Y-12 National Security Complex in July want to call a retired bishop, a doctor, a former U.S. attorney general, a civil rights leader, and a retired military officer and diplomat as witnesses in a Tuesday hearing and May 7 trial in Knoxville.

The proposed witnesses include former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, civil rights sit-in participant Robert Booker, doctor Ira Helfand, retired Col. Mary Annette Wright, and retired U.S. Catholic Bishop Thomas Gumbleton.

The three protesters—Greg Boertje-Obed, Megan Rice, and Michael Walli—also want six hours, and not 1.5, to question prospective jurors for their May 7 trial in U.S. District Court. [Read more…]

Marsha Lee Tilley, age 55, of Lake City, passed away suddenly on Saturday, April 13, at her home.

Marsha was an active member of Browns Flat Baptist Church in Briceville. Marsha spent most of her time with her family (especially her grandkids) and enjoyed every moment with them. If she wasn’t spending time with family, she was on the phone with them, or special friends, which she had many of.

Her family wanted everyone to know that she was a very giving person who always put others before herself, and she never went a day without a glass full of coca-cola. [Read more…]

Doris Ruth Noey

Doris Ruth Catherine Snow Noey, age 92, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Monday, April 15, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

The daughter of James M. and Elizabeth Doyle Snow, she was born on Jan. 22, 1921, in Au Sable Forks, N.Y. Graduating from high school in Au Sable Forks in 1939, she moved to Schenectady, N.Y., where she worked for General Electric and met John Lynn Noey in 1942.

After his service in the United States Army during World War II, the couple married in 1946. Lynn Noey completed his degree in electrical engineering from Cornell University in 1949.

In 1951, Doris and Lynn Noey moved with their growing family to Oak Ridge, where he worked for Union Carbide Corporation at the Y-12 Plant. He retired from Martin-Marietta Energy Systems in 1986.

Doris and Lynn Noey raised their four children in Oak Ridge. She enjoyed an active social life, and she was an avid sports fan, enthusiastically supporting Oak Ridge High School, the Lady Vols, and her grandchildren’s sporting events. Always athletic, she played basketball for her high school team, she was an avid golfer at the Oak Ridge Golf and Country Club, and in her later years, she enjoyed exercising with her friends at Body Recall. She supported a number of community activities, including the Oak Ridge Arts Center, and she was proud of her service for many years as a volunteer driver for FISH. [Read more…]

Ida Page Maddox, age 83, of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday, April 14, at her home.

She was born April 20, 1929, in Fayetteville, Tenn., the daughter of John Calvin Goodrich and Lida Lee Bruton Goodrich.

Mrs. Maddox retired from the city of Fayetteville, where she was the city court clerk for 20 years.

In 1995, she moved to Oak Ridge to be near her family. While in Fayetteville, she was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and upon her move to Oak Ridge became a member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. She enjoyed the company of her canine companions and reading, and she was an avid follower and supporter of national politics. She also greatly enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Daniel Burr Owsley

Daniel Burr Owsley, best known as “Mr. Dan,” born Sept. 26, 1938, passed away suddenly on April 15.

Though he was formally employed by and retired after 34 years of service at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, in occupation, Mr. Dan wore a title of “jack of all trades.”

He married the love of his life, Catherine Mary Owsley, in 1990, and with her came three boys: Neal, Nicholas, and Nolan Smith, whom he raised as his own. In addition to his three stepsons, and without biological children of his own, Mr. Dan took a large role in helping to raise and minister to a countless numbers of children throughout his life. He truly was a father to the fatherless, and he dedicated his time to children who needed additional love and support. This can be most easily confirmed by taking a snap shot of his post-retirement past times from teaching at “Mother’s Day Out” to driving the children’s “choo choo” train at the local mall. U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander on Wednesday joined senators opposing one amendment that would have expanded background checks for potential gun purchasers and another to ban assault weapons.

New gun-control measures are being considered four months after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Wednesday’s votes were considered major defeats for supporters of tougher gun laws.

A Tennessee Republican, Alexander said he instead supports a proposal offered by senators Chuck Grassley, a Iowa Republican, and Ted Cruz, a Texas Republican. He said the Grassley-Cruz amendment would strengthen federal prosecution under existing gun laws and clarify which records must be included in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Oliver Springs native Janelle Arthur will perform again tonight on “American Idol” as she competes in the Top 5.

Following tonight’s show, America’s votes will decide who goes home and who gets to return to the stage next week. The popular televised singing competition on Fox is broadcast on WTNZ, Channel 43, and it starts at 8 p.m. tonight and Thursday.

Separately, a scholarship has been established in Arthur’s name to be awarded annually to a Roane State Community College student pursuing a music degree. The scholarship will be administered by the Roane State Community College Scholarship Foundation. [Read more…]

President Barack Obama’s budget request for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1 includes $326 million for the Uranium Processing Facility project at the Y-12 National Security Complex, federal officials said this week.

The president’s proposed budget, which still has to be considered by Congress, was released last week. The National Nuclear Security Administration released details on Monday.

United Way will announce 2012 campaign results in annual meeting Thursday

It’s been a challenging year, and the United Way of Anderson County is scaling back its annual meeting this year and reducing expenses.

The campaign results from 2012 will be announced at an annual meeting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge, a UWAC member agency. The meeting is open to the public with advance reservation. It will include a brief networking and continental breakfast, followed by the annual business meeting and campaign recognition. [Read more…]
