Oak Ridge to celebrate new Manhattan Project Park on Nov. 12

Oak Ridge will have two community events on November 12 to celebrate the establishment of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. That proposal has been in the works for years to commemorate the Manhattan Project, a top-secret federal program to build the world’s first atomic weapons during World War II.

The legislation authorizing the park was signed into law in December 2014, and it designated sites in Oak Ridge, Los Alamos, New Mexico, and Hanford, Washington as a new three-site national park.

The Oak Ridge City Council has designated the week of November 9-15 as
“The Manhattan Project National Historical Park Week.”

Events have been scheduled at Oak Ridge High School and in Historic Jackson Square on Thursday, November 12, two days after a signing ceremony in Washington, D.C. The two Oak Ridge events will celebrate the establishment of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park. [Read more…]

Legendary vocalist Pat Boone to perform in benefit for ORHS music department

Legendary vocalist Pat Boone will perform in a benefit for the Oak Ridge High School music program in Oak Ridge on Thursday.

The concert starts at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 22, at the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center.

Boone will be backed by Knoxville swing orchestra The Streamliners.

“The performance of his ‘The Music and The Memories’ show is a benefit for the Music Department at the Oak Ridge High School,” a press release said.

Tickets are $75 VIP (with artist meet and greet), $50 orchestra, $35 side aisles, and $20 upper balcony. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge High School junior varsity volleyball team beat Anderson County for the district championship on Wednesday.

The JV season is now over.

The girls varsity team plays in the varsity district tournament on Tuesday, October 5, at Halls.

ORHS boys cross country wins McCallie Invitational in Chattanooga

The Oak Ridge High School boys cross country team finished first at the McCallie Cross Country Invitational in Chattanooga on Saturday.

The Wildcats also had three of the top five male runners in the 5,000-meter run, or 5k.

Senior Mitchell Poynter of Tippecanoe was the top individual male runner, finishing the 5k in 15:43.57.

Senior Tyler Boullie of ORHS was 14 seconds behind him in second place, finishing the race in 15:57.96.

Boullie was followed by junior Jacob Etheridge of ORHS at 16:22.88. [Read more…]

Treston Henderson was named 2015 Homecoming King at Oak Ridge High School, and Alex Allen was named Homecoming Queen, school officials said Thursday.

The five couples of the Homecoming Court were recognized during Homecoming Night on Blankenship Field on Friday, September 18, and the king and queen were announced. The Oak Ridge Wildcats football team beat the Lenoir City Panthers 55-15 during that game.

On Thursday, Diana Homan at Oak Ridge High School said the five couples recognized on Friday were:

  • Kennedy Baker and Treston Henderson,
  • Ellie Brown and Ian Wilder,
  • Maguire James and Alex Allen,
  • Peter Magill and Gabby Romanoski, and
  • Madison Gilmore and Ben Carlson.

The Homecoming Court are all seniors, and they are selected by the senior class. Nominations are made, and the list is narrowed down to five girls and five boys. The entire school selects the king and queen, Homan said.

Four former Wildcats to be inducted into OR Sports Hall of Fame on Friday

Four outstanding former Wildcat athletes will be inducted into the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame at halftime at this Friday’s game with Lenoir City at Blankenship Field.

The four have been picked by the board of the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame. They are:

  • Lowell Wilson—1953, track, football;
  • Dennis Strickler—1968, tennis;
  • Dave Moore—1972, football; and
  • Regina Kirk—1984, basketball.

This 2015 class covers four different sports in four different decades.

A reception with refreshments will be held at the Soup Kitchen following the game, organizers said.

“Please attend the game and come greet these new members and welcome them as new inductees to the ORSHoF,” a press release said. [Read more…]

ORHS Homecoming Pep Rally

The Oak Ridge High School Homecoming pep rally is on Thursday evening at ORHS.

The pep rally starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, September 17, on the front steps of Oak Ridge High School. The 2015 Homecoming Court will be introduced.

It’s a community event, and it will feature a senior Wildcat football player dance, ORHS cheerleaders, and Dance Cats.

There will also be prize drawings.

The Homecoming football game is at Blankenship Field at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The Wildcats will play Lenoir City.

A September 11 memorial ceremony at Oak Ridge High School paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, and it honored military personnel.

The Oak Ridge Civic Music Association’s season starts September 26 with a concert that features music by Handel and Haydn.

“If variety really is the spice of life, music lovers will especially enjoy the 71st season of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association for 2015-2016 because music director Dan Allcott has planned a season of Baroque to Modern, American Salute to English Invasion, and more,” a press release said.

The opening concert will include Haydn’s Symphony No. 104 “London,” performed by the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra. Then, Oak Ridge Chorus will join the symphony in singing Handel’s Coronation Anthem, “Zadok the Priest,” which will be directed by Seth Maples, the chorus conductor. The soloist for the evening, Wesley Baldwin, cello professor at the University of Tennessee, will perform Elgar’s beloved “Cello Concerto in A minor.” [Read more…]

More changes under reorganization at Oak Ridge Schools

The recent reclassification of positions announced earlier this week has created opportunities for other staff to assume new positions in the Oak Ridge Schools, including at Robertsville Middle School and Secret City Academy, a press release said.

Here are the organizational changes:

  • D.T. Hobby will become the Robertsville Middle School assistant principal, which was open due to Garfield Adams being named the new Robertsville Middle School principal.
  • John Roberts will be the new Secret City Academy (formerly the ORS Alternative School) administrator due to the departure of D.T. Hobby. Roberts is currently an Oak Ridge High School assistant principal.
  • A vacancy will be posted immediately to fill the open Oak Ridge High School assistant principal position.
