The Oak Ridge Senior Center will soon be offering free classes for area seniors to get assistance with personal electronic devices such as tablets, laptops, and smart phones, a press release said.
There are two programs that will be offered: Tech Savvy Saturdays, a drop-in program offered by local students, and an individual class offered through the East Tennessee Human Resources Agency, or ETHRA. [Read more…]

Grace Lutheran Church will celebrate its 15th Annual Pet Fest and Blessing on Saturday, October 1.
This year’s event will provide a chance to spend a productive day with your pet while you gather important information about the services and associations available to pets and their owners, a press release said. The Blessing of the Animals is held in the pavilion behind the church at 3 p.m. The church will also hold a Bake Sale, Rummage Sale, and Silent Auction to raise funds for all the participating rescue groups. Boy Scouts and other volunteers will walk your pet while you shop.
Activities will take place from 1-5 p.m. and parking will be available for the mobility-impaired at the church or in the Woodland Elementary School parking lot behind the church. [Read more…]
The Green McAdoo Cultural Organization will be hosting its final concert of the Jazz on the Hill series on Saturday, October 1. The Knoxville Jazz Orchestra will perform.
The event is open to the public. You are can bring your families, blankets, lawn chairs, etc.

On Saturday, September 10, Jack Bailey of Oak Ridge and Demeco Ryans of Bessemer, Alabama, received the University of Alabama’s Paul W. Bryant Alumni-Athlete Award during halftime of the Crimson Tide’s first home game against Western Kentucky.
The award, presented by the University of Alabama National Alumni Association, was bestowed on the two men at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa.
Bailey, past district governor of Rotary District 6780 (which has 3,200 Rotarians in 65 clubs in East Tennessee) and a graduate of Oak Ridge High School, is the first male track and field athlete to receive the award in its 29-year history.
Ryans played football for the Crimson Tide from 2002 to 2005 and in the NFL for 10 years.
The award honors them for “their exceptional accomplishments regarding character, contributions to society, professional achievements, and service to their fellowman.” Past recipients include Bart Starr, Ozzie Newsome, Lee Roy Jordan, Bill Battle, Mal Moore, Joe Namath, and Sylvester Croom Jr. [Read more…]

The 2016 United Way campaign at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory raised $900,000—an increase of $30,000 over the 2015 campaign.
“This is a fantastic and generous offer of support from our employees, management, volunteers, and everyone who has been associated in one way or another with this year’s United Way effort,” said campaign chair Sharon Kohler.
The $900,000 total included a corporate contribution from UT-Battelle. Kohler credited the lab’s Leadership Givers, who contribute a certain percentage of their salary per pay period, for providing 65 percent of the total designated by staff through payroll deduction. There were 22 new Leadership Givers joining this year. [Read more…]

As of Friday, September 23, there were still 11 households that might not have a place to live when Applewood Apartments closes on September 30, according to an organization that helps homeless families in Anderson County.
The closure of the 13-building apartment complex on Hillside Road and Hunter Circle in the Highland View neighborhood was announced in early August.
Andy O’Quinn of Trinity Out-Reach Center of Hope, or TORCH, which is based in Oak Ridge, said he is “extremely proud” of the way the community and its organizations have worked together to help Applewood residents, but there is still work to do.
“At the moment, we are looking for landlords that would be willing to rent by the month to a few people that who receive a disability check and will be getting into income-based housing but need a place to go in the meantime,” O’Quinn said in a Friday status report. “We are also seeking two- and three-bedroom rentals below $550. for our working families. The League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge is having three candidate forums in October.
The first will be on Tuesday, October 4, at the Oak Ridge High School Amphitheater. This will include the candidates for the Oak Ridge Board of Education and the Oak Ridge City Council. It will be from 7 to 9 p.m. October 4 with candidates being briefed at 6:45 p.m.
The second forum will be on Thursday, October 6, at Roane State Community College City Room on the Oak Ridge campus. This will include the Oak Ridge candidates for the Anderson County Charter Commission. To begin the forum, there will be a short presentation from a subject matter expert on the process of reviewing and changing a county charter. This forum will be from 7 to 9 p.m., with candidates being briefed at 6:45 p.m. [Read more…]

The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society’s Fall Plant Sale will be Saturday, October 8, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the UT Arboretum, which is at 901 South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.
Fall is the ideal time to add plants to the landscape, a press release said. To help satisfy that need, Beaver Creek Nursery, East Fork Nursery, Riverdale Nursery, Sunlight Gardens, as well as the UT Arboretum Society’s members and friends, will offer a variety of high quality plants at this sale.
Cash, checks, and credit cards will be accepted for payment.

To help senior drivers hone their safety skills, Methodist Medical Center is sponsoring an AARP Driver Safety Program on Thursday, September 22, and Friday, September 23. The program is from 1 to 5 p.m. each day in the Cheyenne Ambulatory Center’s conference room, which is located at 944 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
The eight-hour classroom refresher course is designed to help drivers 50 years and older to improve their skills. Most auto insurance carriers are required to offer discounts for drivers who complete this accredited course.
The course explains the age-related changes that occur in vision, hearing, and reaction time and provides useful driving safety tips for handling these changes. Certified AARP instructor Jack Cowen will be presenting this course through a combination of group discussion and video activities. [Read more…]
After a short hiatus, the Mother Goose interactive program for babies, toddlers, and preschoolers has returned to Oak Ridge. Sessions are held on the first and third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. with leader Father Goose Michael Raymond and his little sidekick, son Benjamin. The first session was held on Thursday, September 1. Due a previous scheduled event in September only, the second session will be held on the fourth Thursday, September 22. There is no cost.
Mother Goose of Oak Ridge meets in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, or ORUUC, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike, next to Summit Medical.
Mother Goose is a group experience that focuses on the pleasure and power of using rhymes, simple songs, rhythmic activities, musical circle games, parachute play, and more for parents and their babies and young children. [Read more…]

Children and teens from ages 6 to 16 tried their hand at Morse code recently with ham radio operators at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge, learning to communicate on amateur radio as they also participated in celebrating the 100th birthday of the country’s national parks.
Jim and Ronnie Bogard, both amateur radio operators with FCC licenses, welcomed children on a recent Sunday to the museum’s Discovery Lab, where they had set up portable radio equipment and a mobile antenna. Jim Womack (KC4RD) also set up an amateur radio station in the museum’s Living Light Solar House.
“We focus on Morse code, teaching the children to key, so they can send messages. It is like a secret language to kids,” said Jim Bogard (KY4L). “Kids will hear two-way Morse code contacts from all over the U.S. and can have fun sending their names in Morse code. There are also opportunities to talk on the microphone with other amateur radio stations.”
Amateur radio operators will be at the Children’s Museum’s Discovery Lab from 1-4 p.m. each third Sunday of the month. [Read more…]
