‘Classical June’ at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church starts Sunday

Always seeking to further the art and appreciation of classical music, Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church Director of Music Wendel Werner has announced that during the month of June various classical pieces will be the featured music during the 10 a.m. Sunday worship services. Everyone is invited to attend. ORUUC is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike in Oak Ridge.

Featured on June 2 will be a performance of “The Flower Duet” from Léo Delibes’ opera Lakmé sung by Saffron Mills and Anne Scott. On June 19, featured pieces by Schubert and Mozart will be sung by Saffron Mills. Services on June 16 and 23 will feature classical pieces played by Charlotte Bowers and will include some four-hands music played by Charlotte and her mother. ‘Girls of Atomic City’ author at Lunch with League on Tuesday

Denise Kiernan, author of “The Girls of Atomic City: The Untold Story of the Women Who Helped Win World War II,” will speak at Lunch with the League on Tuesday.

The program begins at noon Tuesday in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

“The Girls of Atomic City” is the true story of the young women during World War II who lived and worked in Oak Ridge, one of the Manhattan Project’s secret cities. Through their efforts were crucial to the development of the world’s first atomic bomb, the vast majority of Oak Ridge residents did not know what they were working on until the atomic bomb known as “Little Boy” detonated above Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945. Roane State official to discuss financial aid during AAUW meeting

A Roane State Community College official will discuss financial aid for college students in a noon meeting on Monday at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

‘VolsTeach Program’ at Lunch with League on Tuesday

“VolsTeach” will be the focus of a presentation by university faculty member Peggy Bertrand, the guest speaker at “Lunch with the League” at noon Tuesday in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.

“VolsTeach” is a University of Tennessee program targeted to undergraduate math, science, or engineering majors who are interested in expanding their professional skills and exploring a career in secondary teaching. Without any additional credit hours, students can graduate in four years with a degree and obtain licensure as highly qualified teachers in their respective content areas. The 2013 Ralph Einstein Hadassah’s Youth Aliyah concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. This is an annual event that features performances by young area musicians.

This year’s program includes 11 performers ranging in age from eight to 17 who won an audition in March. Among the judges were Dan Alcott, music director of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and Martha Anderson, principal clarinetist with the Oak Ridge Symphony and Oak Ridge Schools music teacher.

Two students were also selected to perform with the Oak Ridge Symphony in the Annual Family Concert. These students are Jenna Walters, 14, of Knoxville, on viola, who studies with Hillary Herndon, and Meghan Mayes, 17, of Seymour, who is a voice student of Marjorie Stephens. [Read more…]

Free community meal at Unitarian Universalist Church today

The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church has a free community meal this evening, a press release said.

It’s the Stone Soup Ministry meal, and it’s held the last Friday of every month in the Social Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Church. Food for the free monthly meal is provided by the ORUUC congregation with financial help from Oak Ridge community members. [Read more…]

The paintings by regional artist Rickey A. Beene will be displayed in the church sanctuary. They are portraits of his neighbors in Petros in Morgan County.

Sing with Sweet Honey in the Rock vocalist Friday

A member of the vocal group Sweet Honey in the Rock will lead a Friday evening session of singing songs from African and African-American traditions, a press release said.

The songs will be led by Ysaye M. Barnwell, a composer, arranger, author, and actress who has performed on more than 25 recordings with Sweet Honey in the Rock as well as with other artists.

“Everyone who attends will share the common experience of learning in the oral tradition and singing rhythms, chants, traditional songs from Africa, and a variety of songs from African-American culture,” the press release said. “All are welcome, and no experience is necessary. Come and be moved by the power of the music and community.”

‘Separation of Church and State’ discussed at Lunch with League

A retired professor of philosophy, religion, and community health will discuss the separation of church and state during a Tuesday presentation at Lunch with the League.

Paul W. Sharkey, who has a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Notre Dame and a postdoctoral master of public health degree from the University of Southern Mississippi, will be the featured speaker at Tuesday’s lunch, which starts at noon in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church.
