The 2013 Ralph Einstein Hadassah’s Youth Aliyah concert will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church. This is an annual event that features performances by young area musicians.

This year’s program includes 11 performers ranging in age from eight to 17 who won an audition in March. Among the judges were Dan Alcott, music director of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, and Martha Anderson, principal clarinetist with the Oak Ridge Symphony and Oak Ridge Schools music teacher.

Two students were also selected to perform with the Oak Ridge Symphony in the Annual Family Concert. These students are Jenna Walters, 14, of Knoxville, on viola, who studies with Hillary Herndon, and Meghan Mayes, 17, of Seymour, who is a voice student of Marjorie Stephens.

Lora Doherty, 17, a veteran of Youth Aliyah concert who is graduating this year, has been invited to join the program. Lora has been appearing at Youth Aliyah concert since she was 11. Lora is a student of Sue Eddlemon.

This year, the group has also included a special performance by an alumna of Youth Aliyah concerts. Efrat—a professional violinist, violist, singer, arranger, and composer—now works as a recording artist, performer, and teacher with some of today’s most respected musicians in styles ranging from classical to blues. She is also a member of the Americana group Spuyten Duyvil.

Students will perform music by Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Christian Bach, and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among others. Instruments will include cello, harp, piano, viola, violin, and soprano, accompanied by piano.

Youth Aliyah, one of the programs sponsored by the philanthropic organization Hadassah, addresses the needs of Jewish children and adolescents all over the world with special needs. The local chapter of Hadassah sponsors the concert each year to raise money to benefit these children worldwide. Donations can be made at the church entrance.

More information on all the Hadassah programs can be obtained at www.hadassah.org.

The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
