Want to learn how to improve your home so you’ll get a significant return on your investment when you sell it? How to lose weight by better understanding and managing calories and metabolism? How to treat painsl and disorders in the neck, shoulders, back, wrists, hands and feet?

Would you like to know more about modern techniques in psychotherapy, the history of India, America’s first professional songwriter Stephen Foster, the history of spying in the U.S., and evidence that human-induced climate change is really happening?

Are you interested in courses on topics such as archaeology that provides a glimpse of prehistoric Native American life in Tennessee, Native American religion and culture, the effects of growing cities on the environment, and the story of American novelist Harper Lee and her influential book “To Kill a Mockingbird”?

These are among the courses offered during the summer 2016 term of the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning (ORICL), starting June 6 and ending August 5. All courses offer excellent lectures and thought-provoking discussions but have no homework or tests. [Read more…]

Would you like to better understand how 3D printing works, how to write computer code with the software Scratch and how people mine data of importance to you? Or do you just want to learn how to relax?

Nineteen candidates for Oak Ridge City Council, School Board

Ten candidates have qualified to run for Oak Ridge City Council in the November 4 municipal election, and there are nine candidates for Oak Ridge Board of Education—a total of 19 candidates.

It’s the largest field of candidates in recent memory, and it’s not immediately clear when, or if, there has been a field as large.

The deadline to qualify as a candidate in this fall’s municipal elections in Anderson County was noon Thursday.

There is a mix of incumbents and newcomers in Oak Ridge, Clinton, Rocky Top (Lake City), Norris, and Oliver Springs.

Oak Ridge

In Oak Ridge, two incumbents, including Mayor Tom Beehan and Mayor Pro Tem Jane Miller, are not seeking re-election. Meanwhile, the other two incumbents whose terms expire this November, Anne Garcia Garland and David Mosby, are running for another four-year term.

In addition to Garcia Garland and Mosby, the other Oak Ridge City Council candidates are:

  • R.G. “Rick” Chinn,
  • Warren L. Gooch,
  • Gary L. Love,
  • Pedro J. Otaduy,
  • Aditya “Doc” Savara,
  • Ellen D. Smith, and
  • Eric Tobler.

How would you like to see 10 award-winning films from 10 countries? Find information on your ancestors on the Internet? Learn about female Pharaohs in ancient Egypt?

Better understand tax law changes, Medicare, long-term care services, and investment fundamentals? Get a new perspective on Jesus, the Trinity, and the Quakers? Learn to analyze dreams and play better bridge?

You can take courses on any of these and other topics by registering for the fall semester of the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning, or ORICL.

The early registration deadline is Aug. 27 for the fall semester, which starts Sept. 22 and ends Dec. 12. Members should register by Aug. 27 to have the best chance of getting preferred classes and trips. [Read more…]

Thursday deadline to qualify for municipal elections across Anderson County

Thursday is the deadline to qualify for municipal elections across Anderson County, and so far, there appears to be a mix of incumbents and newcomers in Oak Ridge, Clinton, Rocky Top (Lake City), Norris, and Oliver Springs.

Eleven people, including the four incumbents, have expressed an interest in running for four seats on Oak Ridge City Council in November, and seven candidates have qualified so far.

Meanwhile, three people, including one incumbent, have qualified to run for three seats on the Oak Ridge Board of Education. A total of nine potential candidates, including the three who have qualified, have picked up petitions to run for Oak Ridge school board.

The November 4 election is the last in a series of three elections this year. The deadline to qualify is noon Thursday, August 21. A candidate needs 25 verified signatures on a nomination petition to qualify.

Want to know how to improve your bidding in the game of bridge? Play easy songs on the guitar? Take better photos with your digital camera?

These are among the practical courses offered during the winter-spring 2014 semester of the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning, starting Feb. 3.

You can also take ORICL how-to courses on drawing, painting with watercolors, designing earrings, using the computer for genealogical research, retiring successfully, and speaking French, German or Spanish.

The early registration deadline is Jan. 8, 2014, for the winter-spring semester, which ends April 25. Members should register by this date to have the best chance of getting preferred classes and trips. [Read more…]
