Basketball: Smith scores career-high 34 as Wildcats sweep Karns

Oak Ridge senior guard Marcus Smith scored a career-high 34 points as the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats swept Karns at home on Tuesday.

Smith also had eight rebounds and five assists during the 82-65 win over the Beavers at Wildcat Arena.

“I was really proud of Marcus,” Oak Ridge Coach Aaron Green said.

Eleven of his points were from the free throw line, where Smith was 11-of-15.

Oak Ridge senior guard JaVonte Thomas scored 18 points for the Wildcats (6-1, 3-0 District 3-AAA) and pulled down 10 rebounds. Senior guard Joe Kesterson added 10 points, with nine of those on three-point shots. Junior guard Isaiah Johnson scored eight, and sophomore forward Jeremy Miller had six points and 10 rebounds. The Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats scored more than 100 points for the first time since 2003 in a 104-19 win over Karns at home on Tuesday.

The girls were led by sophomore Jada Guinn with a game-high 30 points, the most for a Lady Wildcat since Mykia Dowdell, who is now a junior, scored 32 against Central in 2014, according to broadcaster David Clary.

It’s the 11th time the Lady Wildcats (14-2, 6-0 District 3-AAA) have scored more than 100, Clary said. The last time was in 2003 against Alcoa.

Coaches said the 30 points for Guinn, including 17 in the first quarter alone, was likely a personal best. [Read more…]

District 3-AAA girls: Powell gets team effort in 54-28 win over Karns

CLINTON—Three starters got into early foul trouble, but the Powell Lady Panthers got strong performances from the bench to eliminate Karns 54-28 in the District 3-AAA tournament on Friday.

Powell (14-13) had 10 players scoring, compared to five for Karns.

The Lady Panthers move on to play Campbell County in a semifinal game at Anderson County High School at 3 p.m. Saturday. They also earned a spot in the Region 2 tournament with their win over Karns.

Powell was ahead by only three points, 13-10, at the end of the first quarter. But the Lady Panthers went on a 26-8 scoring run in the next two quarters to open up a large lead.

Lady Wildcats hold Karns scoreless in third quarter of 60-26 win

KARNS—The Lady Wildcats held Karns scoreless in the third quarter of a 60-26 win over the Lady Beavers on Tuesday.

The game was closer at the end of the first quarter, which ended with Oak Ridge ahead 16-10. But the Lady Wildcats went on a 19-4 run in the second quarter, and the game was a blowout by midway through the third quarter.

Oak Ridge Coach Paige Green said the Lady Wildcats emphasized defense in the second half. They shut out the Lady Beavers in the third quarter and held Karns to 12 points in the fourth.

Sophomore post Mykia Dowdell, who already had 10 points early in the game, led Oak Ridge (12-3, 6-0 District 3-AAA) with 18 points. Freshman point guard Jada Guinn had 12.

Lady Wildcats have fourth shutout, Hausladen has eight goals in two games

The Lady Wildcats have four shutouts in their first four games, and freshman forward Kate Hausladen scored eight goals in two of them.

Oak Ridge beat Karns 3-0 on Thursday. Sophomore midfielder Zoe Van Hook scored two goals, and senior forward Macy Barclay scored one, Lady Wildcats Coach Jeff Trombly said.

He said Oak Ridge had most of the possession on Thursday and controlled most of the game.

“We were…very pleased with the results,” Trombly said.

The girls soccer team is now 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the district. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge ends regular season at Fulton on Saturday

KARNS—The first game was a blowout. The second wasn’t.

In early January, the Oak Ridge Wildcats rolled over Karns 83-49.

But on Friday night, the Beavers kept it closer, pulling within one point (32-31) late in the second quarter.

But the Wildcats gave themselves a five-point cushion going into halftime and stretched their lead to 16 late in the third. Karns struggled to cut into the Wildcats’ double-digit lead throughout the fourth. [Read more…]

In the first 2015 game at home for Oak Ridge, both teams had a familiar foe awaiting them: the Karns Beavers and Lady Beavers. Both sets of Beavers gave it their all, but neither could withstand the firepower of the Wildcats or Lady Wildcats.

Girls’ Team

The Oak Ridge Lady Wildcats had a tough time with their opponent for the first quarter of the game, but they soon woke up and clobbered the Lady Beavers of Karns by a score of 57-39. Early foul trouble by the Lady Beavers proved to doom them late in the game.

Karns came out of the gate and scored the first two points of the game. For the first six minutes, there would be seven lead changes and three ties. Both teams were back and forth, with neither one gaining the upper hand. [Read more…]
