The Oak Ridge boys cross country team finished first in its first meet of the season. Oak Ridge Coach Allen Etheridge called it a great start.

Oak Ridge senior Jacob Etheridge was third in the boys 5k (5,000-meter) run, and the Wildcats had four runners in the top 10. Besides Etheridge, they were Reid Dukes (8th place), Dalton Morgan (9th), and Will Jeter (10th).

The Oak Ridge girls cross country team finished third in its first meet of the year, and Coach Allen Etheridge said the girls ran well.

Oak Ridge junior Genevieve Schwartz finished seventh in the girls 5k (5,000-meter) run with a time of 21:31.13.

The A.F. Bridges Cross Country Invitational was in Nashville on Saturday. The Oak Ridge boys finished first. [Read more…]

ORHS Cross Country has fundraiser at Which Wich on Aug. 10

The Oak Ridge High School Cross Country team would like to invite the public to their fundraiser at Which Wich restaurant on Wednesday, August 10, from 5-8 p.m.

The team members will be on hand to welcome you to the Which Wich, a press release said. A portion of the restaurant’s sales during that time period will be donated to the booster club that supports the team’s activities.

“Thank you in advance for your support!” the press release said.

The Oak Ridge High School cross country seniors, along with the rest of the team and the Booster Club, have their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday.

The public is invited. The pancake breakfast is from 8-10 a.m. Saturday, August 6, at First United Methodist Church.

Tickets are $5 each and are available from any team member or at the door. The money raised will help with travel and other team needs throughout the season.

Gashaw Duhamel, who ran cross country for Oak Ridge High School in the fall and track for Tennessee School for the Deaf this spring, has been named one of three male athletes of the year by the Greater Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame.

Duhamel, a high school senior and Oak Ridge resident, was selected based on his track accomplishments, said Jimmy Hyams, sports director at WNML Radio Knoxville.

Also selected were Sevier County pitcher Zach Linginfelter and Fulton High School football/basketball player Kentell Williams, who made All-State twice in two sports, Hyams said.

Duhamel finished second on May 27 in the boys’ state championship 3,200-meter run in Class A-AA in the state track and field championship meet in Murfreesboro. Before that, he finished second in the Class A-AA East Section Finals on May 19 at Christian Academy of Knoxville. [Read more…]

Gashaw Duhamel, an Oak Ridge resident who ran cross country for the Wildcats in the fall, has been signed by the University of Tennessee in Knoxville to run for the Volunteers, and he finished second on Friday in the boys’ state championship 3,200-meter run.

Duhamel attends Tennessee School for the Deaf in Knoxville. He’s reported to be the first athlete from Tennessee School for the Deaf to earn a Division I scholarship.

He finished second on Friday in the boys 3,200-meter run in the Class A-AA state track and field championship meet in Murfreesboro. Duhamel also finished second in the Class A-AA East Section Finals on May 19 at Christian Academy of Knoxville. The top runner in the 3,200-meter race at both meets was Johnathan Chavez, a Knoxville Catholic senior. [Read more…]

Duhamel, AC’s Flatford have second-place finishes

Oak Ridge senior Tyler Boullie finished seventh in the 800-meter run in the state championship track and field meet in Murfreesboro on Friday, and the Wildcats’ 4×800-meter relay team also finished seventh. The Oak Ridge boys finished ninth in the state in Class AAA in the 4×100-meter relay.

Anderson County senior Derek Flatford finished second in the 110-meter hurdles and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles. Senior Gashaw Duhamel, who ran cross country for Oak Ridge in the fall, finished second in Class A-AA in the 3,200-meter run, running for Tennessee School for the Deaf.

In other Oak Ridge finishes, senior Jordan Hardy, who battled a hamstring injury for much of the season, was 13th in the state in the long jump in Class AAA, and sophomore Jose Villegas was 14th in the 3,200-meter run.

Boullie, who had been the number two seed in the 800-meter run, had also been on the 4×800-meter relay team at the Section I finals in Johnson City on May 14. The relay team had been the third seed coming into the state track and field championship. But Boullie did not compete in the 4×800-meter relay at state because he wanted to have a fresh race in the 800-meter run. [Read more…]

Thomas Colburn, a senior at Oak Ridge High School, was recently awarded the AF Bridges State Award of Excellence scholarship.

This $1,000 college scholarship is given annually to a senior student-athlete who best exemplifies the high ideals, ethics, integrity, citizenship and sportsmanship of the TSSAA (Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association).

Colburn is a member of the Oak Ridge Wildcats cross country and track and field teams, and he also was a finalist in an Intel science competition after a two-year project conducted with help from an Oak Ridge National Laboratory mentor.

Senior Gashaw Duhamel was the top runner for Oak Ridge, the runner-up in the Division I Class AAA boys race. It was a 5,000-meter, or 5k, race. Duhamel finished 10th, with a time of 16:20.01 on the muddy course on a chilly, overcast Saturday morning.

Brentwood had two of the top three runners: sophomore Brodey Hasty, who was first with a time of 15:35.09, and junior Taylor Vroon, who finished third with a time of 15:50.85.

Oak Ridge senior Tyler Boullie was 16th, crossing the finish line at Percy Warner Park Steeplechase Course at 16:36.85.

NASHVILLE—The Oak Ridge High School boys team finished second in Tennessee during the 2015 state cross country meet in Nashville on Saturday. Brentwood finished first.

Senior Gashaw Duhamel was the top runner for Oak Ridge, the runner-up in the Division I Class AAA boys race. It was a 5,000-meter, or 5k, race. Duhamel finished 10th, with a time of 16:20.01 on the muddy course on a chilly, overcast Saturday morning.

For the second year in a row, the Oak Ridge High School boys cross country team has won the Region 2-AAA championship. The boys finished first in Knoxville on Thursday.

Oak Ridge senior Gashaw Duhamel finished first in the 5k race. Senior Tyler Boullie finished third, senior Thomas Colburn was sixth, junior Jacob Etheridge was seventh, and senior Daniel Beckett finished ninth.

The Oak Ridge boys team will compete in the state meet on Saturday, November 7, at Percy Warner Park Steeplechase Course in Nashville.
