Anderson County Chamber has Job Fair on Wednesday, Oct. 26

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce will host a Job Fair to recruit employees for local businesses and industries on Wednesday, October 26. The Job Fair is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. at Anderson County High School, which is at 130 Maverick Circle in Clinton.

This one-day event allows job seekers to connect face-to-face with local businesses and industries seeking employees, a press release said.

Job Fair exhibitors to date include: 3M, Aisin Automotive Casting Tennessee, American Employer Group, Anderson County Sheriff’s Department, Clayton Homes, Eagle Bend Manufacturing, East Tennessee Personal Care Service, Emory Valley Center, Express Employment Professionals, Greenfield Senior Living, Health Markets, Home Helpers of East Tennessee, King University, MAG-USA, Inc., Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU), Powder Cote II, Protomet Corporation, Regions Bank, Roane State Community College, Sears, SL Tennessee, Techmer PM, TempSystems/TSI Industrial, Tennessee College of Applied Technology-Knoxville, Tennessee Truck Driving School, and WoodmenLife. The City of Oak Ridge is one that prides itself on the interest, knowledge, and involvement of its citizens in local government. Oak Ridgers are always willing to add a different perspective, technical information, and just darn good opinions on topics that affect them.

On January 12, 2015, the Oak Ridge City Council will appoint citizen volunteers to fill vacancies on boards and commissions that have occurred due to term expiration and attrition from the board membership.

Applications must be received in the City Clerk’s office by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 31.

Over the past years, the City Council has found it sometimes challenging to fill the vacancies of its various boards. People are busy, and getting busier! Some feel that many governmental matters require special knowledge. Others have not thought of providing their talents to shape their community. [Read more…]

ORISE accepts apps for summer research with Homeland Security

The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education is accepting applications for the 2015 U.S. Department of Homeland Security Summer Research Team Program for Minority Serving Institutions, or MSI. The program engages faculty and student teams in research that provides opportunities to better understand the mission and research needs of DHS and to strengthen the talent pool of scientists and engineers, a press release said.

ORISE administers the program for DHS through ORISE, which is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities for the U.S. Department of Energy.

The 10-week summer research program provides faculty and student teams from Minority Serving Institutions with opportunities to conduct research at the university-based DHS Centers of Excellence. The DHS Science and Technology Directorate Centers of Excellence network is an extended consortium of hundreds of universities generating ground-breaking ideas for new technologies, while collaborating to serve DHS’ many mission needs, the press release said. Friday deadline to apply for city boards, commissions

The deadline to apply for Oak Ridge boards and commissions is Friday, November 7. The applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday.

With less than a week remaining, city staff would like to encourage those who are interested in serving on a board to complete the 2014 Boards and Commissions Application, which is available on the City Clerk’s website, or residents can obtain paper copies in the City Clerk’s Office located in Room Number 109 in the Municipal Building, a press release said.

The election for these boards in the end-of-year recruitment will take place at a special meeting of the Oak Ridge City Council scheduled for Monday, December 15. [Read more…]

The job fair is scheduled from 2-8 p.m. Thursday, October 16, at Roane State Community College’s Higher Education and Workforce Training Facility at 214 Nave Street in Clinton (at the Anderson County Fairgrounds). The Oak Ridge Public Library has announced a new service for the community and new online photograph collections. With Reference by Appointment, individuals can obtain one-on-one, in-depth assistance with research, résumés, or online job applications with a trained professional at no cost.

Anyone may schedule an appointment to meet with a librarian for assistance in the use of the library’s many resources. A librarian can help format résumés, search census records in Heritage Quest, assist with databases searches in Tennessee Electronic Library, suggest research material for a school or work project, and help with basic computer skills. No library card is needed in order to take part in this service. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge kindergarten early enrollment ends March 29

A change in Tennessee law now requires students to turn five years old on or before Aug. 31, 2013, to enroll in kindergarten this fall, but Oak Ridge Schools is taking applications for early enrollment.

The applications will be accepted through Friday, March 29. This will be the beginning of a two-part registration process that will be completed just prior to school starting for the 2013–2014 school year, a press release said. [Read more…]

Secret City Festival applications now available online

World War II Re-enactment

The Secret City Festival in Oak Ridge includes one of the largest World War II re-enactments in the South.

Preparations for the 11th Annual Secret City Festival are under way, and applications are now available online.

Vendors and exhibitors can visit www.SecretCityFestival.com and download an application to become involved in this year’s event, which will take place June 21-22 at A.K. Bissell Park.

Applications are available for arts and crafts, exhibitors, and food vendors.
