Oliver Springs police said they found two horses—one dead, the other alive but in poor condition—last week.
Few details have been released, but investigators said they are waiting on test results to see if any charges will be filed.
In the meantime, the owner has surrendered the surviving horse to Horse Haven of Tennessee.
Jan Follansbee
The Collierville woman who was reported missing after last being seen in Oak Ridge on Wednesday has been located, authorities said.
Jan Follansbee, 58, was found safe at a relative’s house on Sunday, Jan. 26, said Sgt. Detective Jason Smith of the Loudon County Sheriff’s Office.
Follansbee had been reported missing after leaving her mother’s home on Dasher Lane in Oak Ridge on Wednesday. She had left on an errand.
Follansbee lives in Collierville in Shelby County in west Tennessee, and she has two daughters who also live there. A sister in Knoxville had reported her missing.
Paul White
Sheriff Paul White is seeking re-election as Anderson County sheriff. White was first elected in 2006 and re-elected in 2010.
White is a veteran law officer with 38 years of experience, a press release said. His first five years were with the Oliver Springs Police Department, where he served as a police officer and patrol sergeant. The remaining 33 years have been with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department, where he advanced through the ranks from patrol deputy to commanding the Patrol Division and Court Services.
During his career, White had the opportunity to hold almost every position within the Sheriff’s Department and at one time was appointed “acting sheriff,” the release said.
“Having served under the last five administrations, Paul White had the unique opportunity to observe and utilize many ideas and practices as to how the Sheriff’s Department could best serve the needs of Anderson County,” the release said. [Read more…]
The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office is seeking the public’s help in finding Jan Follansbee, center, a Collierville resident who was last seen in Oak Ridge on Wednesday.
The Loudon County Sheriff’s Office is seeking help in finding a woman who was last seen in Oak Ridge on Wednesday.
Barbara “Jan” Follansbee, 58, left her mother’s home at 102 Dasher Lane in Oak Ridge between 6 and 7 p.m. Wednesday, authorities said. Follansbee said she was going to Walmart.
Follansbee has brown hair, is about 5’6”, and weighs about 135 pounds. She was wearing sweat pants and a red sweater and red jacket when she left her mother’s home on Wednesday, according to a report by Loudon County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Detective Jason Smith. She left in a maroon 2008 Honda Accord with a license plate number 718-VXR. [Read more…]

The Clinton Police Department is investigating a shoplifting incident at Walmart that quickly escalated to aggravated assault on Monday.
While shoplifting is nothing new at the big-box retailer, the store’s loss prevention associate called police to the store shortly before 3:30 p.m. Monday after a man allegedly threatened him with a box cutter while stealing women’s underwear. The loss prevention associate confronted a man who was walking out the store’s front door with two packages of plus-sized women’s underwear valued at a little more than $25 without paying for them. A Knoxville man died in a Wednesday night crash on Bethel Valley Road east of Spallation Drive at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, authorities said.
John Kirkpatrick was driving eastbound in a 2001 Honda CRV when it apparently went off the south side of Bethel Valley Road and hit a tree, the Oak Ridge Police Department said after an initial investigation. Kirkpatrick was the vehicle’s only occupant, and he was found dead at the scene, a press release said. [Read more…]
The Anderson County Commission rejects a proposal for a non-binding referendum in August on whether federal prisoners should be housed at the expanded county jail.
CLINTON—Anderson County commissioners rejected a proposal on Tuesday to ask voters in August whether federal prisoners should be housed at the expanded county jail.
The vote was 10-4 against the proposal for the non-binding referendum.
Earlier this month, the Anderson County Legislative Committee had recommended that the full commission consider the referendum, which was proposed by Anderson County Commissioner Dusty Irwin. He represents District 3, which includes the Andersonville, Fairview, Norris, and Glen Alpine precincts, and Irwin’s constituents live in the district that includes the Anderson County Detention Facility in Clinton. Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation is donating $20,000 worth of much-needed equipment to the Oak Ridge Fire Department and Roane County Sheriff’s Office, a press release said.
Events are planned in Oak Ridge on Wednesday and Lenoir City on Thursday to celebrate the donations of the life-saving tools, the release said.
The ORFD is receiving a thermal imaging camera, worth more than $10,000.
“The donated camera will detect body heat and hot spots in burning buildings, allowing firefighters to reach victims quickly and put out deadly fires,” the release said. [Read more…]

A Jeep pulling a trailer hauling an ATV eastbound on Tri-County Boulevard on Monday went off the road near Edmonds Drive and knocked down a railroad crossing signal.
The ATV flipped and landed next to the vehicle after the crash, which occurred at about 5:50 p.m. Monday.
No injuries were reported. The Oliver Springs police and fire departments responded as did the Anderson County Emergency Medical Services. [Read more…]

According to information released by the state on Friday, Anderson County led the state in the number of meth lab seizures in 2014.
Authorities in Anderson County made 83 meth lab busts in 2013. Anderson County is one of two East Tennessee counties that ranked in the top five for meth lab seizures in the state during the 2013. The other was Monroe County, which ranked fourth. [Read more…]

Workers at the East Tennessee Technology Park, the former K-25 site, were asked to shelter in place for about 30 minutes early Thursday afternoon as police officers searched for an armed person who had been reported to be traveling from the Clinton area to west Oak Ridge.
It was the same search that led to a brief lockdown at Jefferson Middle School at about 1 p.m. Thursday, said Mike Koentop, U.S. Department of Energy spokesman in the Oak Ridge Office.
“It was not related at all to any DOE activity,” Koentop said. “Steps were taken as a precaution.” [Read more…]
Jefferson Middle School
Jefferson Middle School was briefly locked down early Thursday afternoon as police searched for a person armed with a handgun at a nearby business.
The Oak Ridge Police Department began searching for the person at about 12:30 p.m. Thursday after receiving information that the individual, who is not identified in a press release, had just left the Clinton area and might be on the way to the west end of Oak Ridge.
“Oak Ridge police personnel from the Patrol, Criminal Investigations, and Administration divisions immediately deployed throughout the city to locate the individual, and at approximately 12:52 p.m., information was received that the individual may have been in a vehicle in the Home Depot parking lot in Oak Ridge,” an ORPD press release said. “Oak Ridge police unmarked units identified a vehicle matching the description of the individual’s vehicle in the parking lot and requested the Jefferson Middle School initiate a lockdown, as it was nearby.
