Parking lot sweeps at ORHS designed to ensure safe, healthy campus, principal says

The random parking lot sweeps conducted several times per year at Oak Ridge High School with officers and police dogs are meant to help ensure a safe, healthy campus, an official during one sweep Friday.

The school conducted the Friday sweep with help from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and Oak Ridge Police Department and several canine officers.

Officials said it was a successful operation, although they declined to give specific information, including because the searches involve juveniles.

It was the first parking lot sweep since new ORHS Principal Martin McDonald replaced David Bryant, who retired this summer. [Read more…]

U.S. Attorney Killian resigning from ET post to join national law firm

KNOXVILLE—William C. Killian, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee, has submitted his resignation to President Barack Obama effective December 5. He is joining a national law firm.

Killian was sworn into office October 4, 2010, after he was nominated by Obama and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate. He served on the following subcommittees of the Attorney General’s Advisory Committee: Terrorism and National Security, Civil Rights, and Healthcare Fraud Working Group, a press release said.

Federal cases that originate in Oak Ridge are heard in the Eastern District of Tennessee, which has offices in Knoxville and uses courtrooms there. Among the cases heard there in the past few years, for example, are the case of three anti-nuclear weapons activities who broke into the Y-12 National Security Complex in 2012, the trademark lawsuit against Lake City when it changed its name to Rocky Top, and a methamphetamine manufacturing conspiracy in Anderson County. Man arrested after robbery reported in Claxton

A 35-year-old Clinton man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after a robbery was reported in Claxton, authorities said.

Anderson County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to Bull Run Park on New Henderson Road at about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on a report of a robbery of an individual. A Claxton woman stated she had been robbed at gunpoint by someone she had known for about six months, Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said.

Bradley Ray Perkins, 35, of Fowler Lane in Clinton, allegedly called the victim and asked to borrow some money for food, Lucas said. She met Perkins at the park, where he was reported to have displayed a handgun and robbed her of $250, Lucas said. [Read more…]

A wanted fugitive was arrested Wednesday afternoon in a joint operation by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and the Oak Ridge Police Department. The operation involved the deployment of the ORPD SWAT team at a home on Robertsville Road.

ACSD Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said deputies received information that Jesse Lee Shackelford, 32, was in the home. Shackelford was wanted on seven outstanding warrants that included felony charges and was reported to be armed with a handgun, Lucas said.

Deputies and officers surrounded the home, and ORPD SWAT was called to the scene. ORPD SWAT members entered the residence and arrested Shackelford without incident, Lucas said. He said Shackelford was found to be armed with not one but two handguns.

Additional charges for drug and weapons offenses will be forthcoming, Lucas said. Shackelford was also wanted in Knox County on warrants. [Read more…]

Booms heard Wednesday were explosives training for officers at UT Arboretum

The booms heard in Oak Ridge on Wednesday were from explosives training for law enforcement officers at the University of Tennessee Arboretum on South Illinois Avenue, an official said.

Twenty-nine officers from across the country are training in a 10-week National Forensics Academy course offered by the UT Law Enforcement Innovation Center in Oak Ridge. That course includes crime scene investigation, and one aspect of that training involves investigating car bombs, suicide bombers, and improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, said Don Green, executive director of the Law Enforcement Innovation Center. On Wednesday, an explosives ordinance team from the Knoxville Police Department used explosives to show officers what they would have to go through at that type of scene.

Updated: Two charged in Friday shooting that injured two

An Oak Ridge man has been charged in the shooting that left two people seriously injured in the Scarboro neighborhood on Friday, authorities said.

Tyler Earl Gulley, 22, of Hampton Road, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault in the alleged shooting. He is accused of shooting Daniel Rose in the left foot. Also wounded in the shooting was Josie Wisman, who was hit in the abdomen, according to an arrest warrant filed in Anderson County General Sessions Court.

Officers found one handgun at the scene, the Oak Ridge Police Department said in a press release Tuesday.

They searched the area and executed a search warrant at 101 Hampton Road, where two firearms were recovered, a Glock 26 9mm and a Glock 22 40-caliber, authorities said.

The ORPD arrested Gulley that evening for the shooting that morning, the ORPD said. Gulley was located at his home on Hampton Road and detained without incident, said the arrest warrant, filed by Oak Ridge Police Department Detective William Weaver. [Read more…]

Controlled burns scheduled on Oak Ridge Reservation

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office is starting a controlled burn of a small forestland area on the Oak Ridge Reservation for prescribed burning at the East Tennessee Technology Park and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Beginning Monday, November 16, weather permitting, a controlled burn was expected to take place on approximately four acres south of West Bear Creek Road near the DOE Central Training Facility southeast of ETTP.

The planned burn is being conducted as an effort to reduce the risk of wildfires and will be overseen by the State of Tennessee Division of Forestry, which maintains fire control equipment, certified burn managers, and trained personnel at the burn area with the support of the Oak Ridge Fire Department and the ORNL forester, a press release said.

California Ave. temporarily closed, power out after SUV hits utility pole

A mother and her son were taken to the hospital with injuries reported to be non-life threatening after a small sport utility vehicle hit a utility pole on California Avenue, flipped, and landed on its top Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The single-vehicle crash was reported at about 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. The SUV was reportedly driving north on California Avenue when it crashed.

Authorities temporarily closed a short section of California Avenue at West Arrowwood Road as utility workers repaired the pole.

In a text alert at 10:08 a.m. Tuesday, the Oak Ridge Police Department said there was a power outage in east Oak Ridge from California Avenue east, and it could affect traffic signals. The signal at Melton Lake Drive and Oak Ridge Turnpike was reported to be out.

At about 11 a.m., the Oak Ridge Electric Department said there was damage to a substation as well.

“As a result, power is expected to be off east of Florida Avenue on both sides of the Turnpike, including residents and businesses along East Emory Valley Road, for the next few hours in order to make the necessary repairs,” the Electric Department said.

The ORED reported at about 12:30 p.m. that power had been restored on the east end of Oak Ridge.

AC man flown to burn unit in Chattanooga after setting himself on fire Sunday

An Anderson County man was flown to a burn unit in Chattanooga after reportedly setting himself on fire with gasoline in Claxton on Sunday, authorities said.

The 36-year-old man poured gasoline on his head and set himself on fire Sunday morning, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said in a report. He was apparently having medical and other issues, Anderson County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Mark Lucas said.

The self-immolation was reported on Palm Lane near Claxton Elementary School at about 9:20 a.m. Sunday.

Lucas said the man was transported to the football field at Claxton Elementary School by Anderson County Emergency Medical Services, where a Lifestar medical helicopter picked him up and flew him to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville. The man was transferred from UT to a burn unit at Erlanger Health System in Chattanooga by Lifestar.

Lucas said he didn’t know the man’s condition at that time.

There were no injuries, and no hazardous or radioactive material was released in a small fire at Manufacturing Sciences Corporation on South Illinois Avenue on Monday morning, officials said.

The was reported in a dust collection system of an oxide processing area at Manufacturing Sciences at about 9:30 a.m. Monday.

“All non-essential personnel were evacuated from the building, and the fire was quickly contained,” said Jeff Jansen, Manufacturing Sciences vice president and general manager. “During this time, the facility maintained negative ventilation, and no hazardous or radioactive material was released to the public.”

About 40 people were evacuated, said Tim Waddell, Manufacturing Sciences business and facilities operations manager. [Read more…]

A family escaped and pets were rescued from a house fire on Delaware Avenue on Saturday afternoon.

The fire was reported at 12:09 p.m. Saturday.

Resident Jessica Millette said a neighbor banged on the door and yelled: “Get out! Get out!”

She went to investigate and saw flames at the back door of the house at 401 Delaware Avenue.

“I yelled, ‘Get out! Get out!,'” Millette said. “There’s fire!” [Read more…]
