AC man charged with murder

A 32-year-old Anderson County man has been charged with second-degree murder and three counts of aggravated assault that seriously injured two people, including the person who died, according to indictments filed in October.

Calvin Brandon Humphrey, of Hickory Valley Road, in Heiskell, east of Norris, killed Jasper Baysinger on January 25, the four-count indictment alleged.

School bus driver arrested following alleged assault on elementary student

Oak Ridge police arrested a 73-year-old school bus driver Friday evening on an aggravated assault charge after he allegedly acted aggressively toward an elementary-aged student, the city said in a press release. Additional charges are pending, the press release said.

Matthew T. Bak of Oliver Springs was taken into custody Friday following an investigation into reports that he acted aggressively toward an elementary-aged student on the bus he was driving on Thursday evening, the City of Oak Ridge said in the press release. Bak’s actions caused all students on the bus to fear for their safety, the press release said.

NNSA invites the public to review and submit comments on the Draft EA. Oak Ridge Senior Center to hold drop-in Veterans Day Recognition

The Oak Ridge Senior Center will be honoring the men and women who have served the United States both present and past with a Drop-in Recognition on Friday, November 10, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All veterans who pre-register by Monday, November 6, will receive a special goodie bag. You are urged to call the Senior Center to register if you plan to attend so staff can have an accurate head count of veterans attending.

Music will be provided by the Golden Eagles along with light refreshments and door prizes, a press release said.

Links between religion, violence, and gender will be discussed during Lunch with the League on Tuesday, November 7.

Lunch with the League is hosted by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge.

The November 7 talk is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

“All are welcome to bring their lunch or purchase a boxed lunch for a nominal fee,” a press release said. “Coffee and tea will be served. The presentation will begin at noon.”

CNS honors Master Machine as small business of year

Consolidated Nuclear Security presented the small business of the year award to Master Machine Incorporated during a recent Partners in Excellence supplier outreach event. The Chattanooga-based business focuses on machining, weld fabrication, and engineering services.

MMI has been a supplier to Consolidated Nuclear Security for more than five years, starting with Y-12 National Security Complex and adding the Pantex Plant in 2022.

“Master Machine consistently demonstrates the ability to identify and implement manufacturing methods needed to address complicated projects,” said Rick Hillert, senior director of Supply Chain Management. The company also made $1 million in plant and equipment improvements to address tool needs for CNS, a press release said.

The company, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, was nominated by Roger Aigner, subcontract technical representative for Packaging and Transportation Engineering at Y-12. In his nomination, Aigner noted: “They are professional, capable, and a pleasure to work with. They understand the CNS mission and are well deserving of this award.”

This is your last week to order Oak Ridge High School WildBand fruit to arrive in time for the winter holidays.

It’s also your last chance to see WildBand perform its award-winning METAL halftime show during the Oak Ridge football playoff game at Blankenship Field on November 3, a press release said. ”The band had strong 4A showings recently at the Walden Ridge and Foothills Classic marching competitions,” the release said. 

The award-winning band, which has a fresh fruit fundraiser, consistently earns superior ratings and top-ranking placements at regional marching band competitions, while also providing the community artistic enrichment through annual concerts and halftime shows at football games, the press release said.

It said the indoor percussion ensemble and winter guard achieve the highest scores and rankings in regional contests, and in 2022, both made it to the finals in regional WGI competitions. The indoor percussion ensemble went on to achieve a historic 10th place finals finish at the WGI World Championship in Dayton, Ohio, the press release said.

Oak Ridge is part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, which commemorates the top-secret federal program to build the world’s first atomic bombs during the second world war. Besides Oak Ridge, the national park includes Hanford, Washington, and Los Alamos, New Mexico.

Hike with ranger, learn about pre-war settlements

You can learn about settlements in the area before Oak Ridge was built during World War II during a hike with a national park ranger on Saturday, November 25.

The hike is organized by the National Park Service. Oak Ridge is part of the Manhattan Project National Historical Park, which commemorates the top-secret federal program to build the world’s first atomic bombs during the second world war. Besides Oak Ridge, the national park includes Hanford, Washington, and Los Alamos, New Mexico.

The hike on the North Boundary Greenway is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 25, at the east quarry trail head.

Man sentenced to 8 years in drug death

A 36-year-old Anderson County man was sentenced Wednesday to eight years in prison for delivering fentanyl and heroin to a 33-year-old Campbell County man who died about three years ago. The sentence was part of a plea agreement that led to the dismissal of a second-degree murder charge filed against Timothy Wayne Altum, who has a Rocky Top address.

In a plea agreement approved Wednesday, Altum also received two 12-year sentences on drug charges. One was for possessing more than 0.5 grams of methamphetamine for sale, and the other was for having heroin for sale.

Lunch with League: Global warming at a local level

A research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on Tuesday will discuss the expected impacts of climate change on extreme weather and cities.

Melissa Allen-Dumas is a research scientist in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Household hazardous waste collection is Saturday

The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation mobile household hazardous waste collection service will be in Anderson, Cheatham, and Wilson counties on Saturday, October 7.

“Tennesseans are encouraged to bring household hazardous waste—including cleaning fluids, pesticides, swimming pool chemicals, and more—to a designated drop-off location,” a press release said. “A person does not need to live in the county to participate.”
