The Clinton City School Board voted Thursday to recommend Curtis Isabell to the City Council as the successor for former Board member R.C. Hutchins, who resigned his post earlier this year.
The City Council could vote next week on the board’s recommendation to serve the rest of Mr. Hutchins’ term, which expires in December 2014.

Senate Republicans on Thursday voted against ending debate on the nomination of Chuck Hagel to be the nation’s next defense secretary.
Hagel is a former Republican Senator and a Vietnam War veteran, but his nomination has been opposed by conservatives and pro-Israel forces. The Senate voted 58 to 40 to end debate, two votes short of the 60 that were needed.
Senators Lamar Alexander and Bob Corker, both Tennessee Republicans, voted against ending the debate.
Traditional Irish Arts of Knoxville has organized a weekend of Irish music, culture, and fun at the Grove Theater in Oak Ridge and Boyd’s Jig and Reel in Knoxville, and it starts today.
It’s the 5th Annual Tune Junkie Weekend, and it will feature workshops, sessions, and a showcase concert.

Starting Friday, the Oak Ridge Police Department will conduct an intensive eight-day pedestrian crosswalk safety operation that will focus on drivers who fail to yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, a press release said.
Known as Operation Drive Safe 2013, the operation starting Friday will focus on a particularly dangerous location on Emory Valley Road, the press release said. It’s meant to improve pedestrian and traffic safety in the city.

The Tennessee Veterans Business Association awarded the 2013 “Veterans Work” Award to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Keith Joy, ORNL Small Business Programs director.
The award was presented during a recent banquet at the Knoxville Convention Center.
The annual award honors a company that works with and hires veterans. ORNL works to consistently meet or exceed its small business goals for veteran-owned small businesses, as well as those in all socioeconomic categories, a press release said.

Oak Ridge Associated Universities has partnered with Oak Ridge National Laboratory to bring students and scientists together through a weekly program called Science Saturdays.
Students in grades 8-12, along with their parents, are invited for six Saturday morning presentations in February and March where they will learn about a variety of engaging science topics through interactive presentations and hands-on activities.

U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander on Wednesday announced he will be an original cosponsor of a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
“For eight years as governor, I balanced Tennessee’s budget, and other states balance their budgets—I don’t see why Washington can’t do the same,” said Alexander, a Tennessee Republican.
The second-term senator said the federal government is borrowing 42 cents of every dollar it spends, and that’s money the country dosen’t have.

A report released Wednesday said the automatic federal spending cuts set for March 1 would require furloughs at the Y-12 National Security Complex and a shutdown of the High Flux Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
The report was issued by Democrats on the House Appropriations Committee.
It said Y-12 would have to furlough 700-1,000 of its 4,500 employees for up to six months, and there would be hundreds of layoffs at national laboratories, universities, research facilities, and private sector companies that rely on grant funding from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science for energy research, the report said.
