Oak Ridge Egg Hunt

The Oak Ridge Recreation and Parks Department will host the 2016 Egg Hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 19.

Hundreds of children are expected to participate in this annual spring event. More than 15,000 candy and prize-filled eggs will be hidden in Bissell Park with a first-, second-, and third-place prize egg in each age group.

This event will be held rain or shine, so participants should dress for the weather, a press release said. If severe weather prevents hiding the eggs outdoors, they will be given away in the gym, and a drawing will be held for the prizes. [Read more…]

Roane Co. school board to discuss director search on Thursday

The Roane County School Board will have a community meeting Thursday to discuss finding a successor to Gary Aytes, pictured above.

The Roane County School Board will have a community meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, February 25, in the O’Brien Theatre at Roane State Community College in Harriman for anyone that would like to address the board about the search for the next director of schools.

The Board is working on choosing someone to be the next director of schools, and applications will be taken beginning next week.

School Board members hope to hire Gary Aytes’ successor by the end of April.

Officials reported that trees were down across Oak Ridge and Anderson County on Wednesday morning, there were several power outages in Oak Ridge, and flooding was reported at some spots in Anderson County.

The flooding, fallen trees, and power outages were reported after a round of storms came through Wednesday morning.

Oak Ridge High School Masquers, the school’s drama program, will present “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” the delightful musical, for four performances in March.

The performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, March 4; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday, March 5; and 2 p.m. Sunday, March 6, at the Oak Ridge Performing Arts Center. The Performing Arts Center is at Oak Ridge High School at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Advanced tickets are $7 and are available at the ORHS office and The Ferrell Shop. At the door, tickets will be $10.

Under the direction of Dana Wham, who has directed, choreographed, or acted in numerous adult and children productions throughout the region, this year’s “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” is a complete operetta, with nearly every line sung, a press release said. [Read more…]

Roane State to celebrate its LEAP grant on Leap Day

Roane State Community College received a workforce development grant last year, and the school will celebrate the LEAP grant on February 29, Leap Day, with mechatronics demonstrations, robotics teams from area high schools, and refreshments.

“Because Monday, February 29, is Leap Day, it’s the perfect time for Roane State Community College to celebrate its LEAP grant,” a press release said.

The $970,000 Labor Education Alignment Program, or LEAP, grant helped Roane State expand its one-year mechatronics program into a two-year degree and to offer dual credit mechatronics course for students at area high schools.

The Leap Day celebration is scheduled from 9-11 a.m. on Monday, February 29, at the college’s Higher Education and Workforce Training Facility in Clinton at 214 Nave Street. The public is invited. [Read more…]

Roane State library hosts book sale March 1-2

The Coffey Library at Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus will host its annual “Love Your Library” book sale Tuesday, March 1, and Wednesday, March 2. The sales are scheduled from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. each day.

The sale will include fiction, non-fiction, hardback books, paperbacks, textbooks, cookbooks, computer software books, children’s books, craft books, and more. Only cash and checks will be accepted. Checks need to be payable to the Roane State Foundation. Prices range from $1-3.

Missing juvenile has been located, CPD says

Alexis Maynard, 17, a juvenile reported missing last week, has been located, authorities said on Monday, Feb. 22, 2016.

A juvenile reported missing last week has been located, the Clinton Police Department said Monday.

The CPD had asked for help locating Alexis Maynard, 17, on Tuesday, February 16. The Police Department reported on Monday, February 22, that she has been located.

“Thanks for your assistance,” the CPD said in a Facebook post.

Vann abruptly resigns as Oliver Springs mayor

In a move that caught town officials by surprise, Oliver Springs Mayor Jerry Vann abruptly resigned Thursday night, shortly after the Town Council’s meeting began.

Just after the roll was called, Vann addressed the Council and others in attendance, telling them that after speaking with doctor and his family he has decided to resign due to health concerns.

After his message, Vann shook the hands of his fellow Council members, the city manager, and the city judge and left the Council meeting room. Officials told our partners at BB-TV that the announcement caught them by surprise.

The Council will have to appoint someone to serve as mayor through the next municipal election.

AC school board to interview Parrott for schools director

Anderson County Schools will have a special-called meeting on Monday, February 29, to interview Tim Parrott, a current employees, for the director of schools position.

If hired, Parrott would replace Larry Foster, who is retiring. Parrott currently works in the Anderson County Schools Central Office as director of career and special education, and he has spent decades in the county school system.

The February 29 meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the Anderson County Schools board room.

The Anderson County Board of Education recently voted to suspend the interview process in its search for the next schools director and to begin working with Parrott on a new contract to succeed Foster.

Only one other applicant applied for the post, and members of a special search committee indicated that Parrott’s resume clearly stood out in comparison.

A deputy state fire marshal has been hired as fire marshal in Oak Ridge.

The selection of Travis Solomon for the Oak Ridge Fire Department post was announced Monday by Fire Chief Darryl Kerley.

Solomon was an employee of the Tennessee Fire Marshal’s office. For the past 13 years, he has served as the deputy state fire marshal in charge of fire and life safety codes for the buildings and facilities at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, a press release said.

Solomon has a bachelor’s degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University, and he has 17 years of experience in fire, rescue, and emergency medical services, having also served with the New Market Fire Department, the press release said. He is currently a captain with New Market and maintains their FireHouse software for records management and state incident reporting. [Read more…]

CLINTON—A Clinton woman walking on Clinton Highway died after two vehicles hit her Sunday evening, authorities said.

Patricia A. Rouse, 50, was walking in the right-hand southbound lane, headed toward Knoxville, when she was hit by two southbound vehicles at about 7:33 p.m. Sunday, the Tennessee Highway Patrol said.

Rouse died at the scene, the THP said. She was apparently walking home, authorities said.

The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured, the THP said. No criminal charges or citations were issued. [Read more…]
