Centennial golf bunkers could be renovated for $128,000

Twenty-nine bunkers, or sand traps, could be renovated at Centennial Golf Course for $128,000 under a resolution to be considered by the Oak Ridge City Council tonight.

The Golf Course Fund would be used to pay for the repairs at the city-owned golf course. The work would be done by First Place Finish Inc. of Oak Ridge, with help from Signet Golf Associates.

Smith seeks re-election in November

Oak Ridge City Council member Ellen Smith has announced she is seeking re-election in November.

An environmental scientist, Smith was first elected to City Council in 2007. She is one of three incumbents seeking to keep their seats in the Nov. 6 election.

Oak Ridge City Manager Mark S. Watson will speak to the Kiwanis Club on Tuesday.

The meeting starts at noon, and the program begins at 12:10 p.m. at the Super China Buffet, a press release said. Topics that could be discussed include city functions, the city staff, the city manager’s office and its activities, and local areas of interest and concern.

Frank announces county staff changes, a focus on jobs, prosperity

New Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank announced staff changes Tuesday and pledged to focus on jobs and economic prosperity.

Frank said she will no longer work at her family-owned business, Nature’s Marketplace, and will push to make government more transparent while trying to cut illegal drug use in Anderson County.

Frank is Anderson County’s first female mayor. She was sworn in Friday evening and took office at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 1.

Frank makes personnel change, Beauchamp laid off

In her first high-profile personnel change, new Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank confirmed Tuesday afternoon that Anderson County Grants Coordinator Alan Beauchamp has been laid off due to an office restructuring.

“I was forced to do that to have assistants in the office,” said Frank, who was elected Aug. 2 and officially took office at 12:01 a.m. Sept. 1.

Frank said there were no longer be one full-time grants coordinator. Instead, Richard Burroughs, her chief campaign volunteer, will serve as both grants coordinator and chief of staff.

Developer could request tax incentives at Alexander Inn

An unnamed business could request tax incentives to redevelop the historic but run-down Alexander Inn, city officials said Friday.

The Oak Ridge Industrial Development Board could hear a few brief summary of the proposal during a meeting this afternoon, although few details are publicly available. The potential owner or developer could request tax increment financing, or TIF, which uses new property tax revenues generated at a site to pay for improvements.

First elected in 2007, Hensley is one of three incumbents seeking re-election this fall. The election also includes two other candidates, Trina Baughn and Kelly Callison.

School supply, book drawings for Clinton library users in September

Children who use their library card at the Clinton Public Library in September can enter a drawing to win a backpack full of school supplies, and adults can win a tote bag filled with books, a press release said.

The drawings are being held in honor of Library Card Sign-Up Month.

Oliver Springs has free smoke detectors for city residents

The Oliver Springs Fire Department has free smoke detectors available for city residents.

The smoke detectors were obtained through a Federal Emergency Management Agency grant program, a press release said.

New Anderson County mayor, property assessor sworn in today

Business owner Terry Frank, Anderson County’s new mayor, will be sworn in at 5 p.m. today in the Circuit Courtroom at the Anderson County Courthouse in Clinton.

The new property assessor, John K. Alley Jr., will also be sworn in.

An Oak Ridge planning commissioner who sought an appointment to City Council last year is running for election to the seven-member legislative body this year.

The candidate, Kelly S. Callison, is vice chair of the Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission. He is also the chief operating officer of Information International Associates Inc.

Oak Ridge bans horses at Haw Ridge Park

Starting Saturday, horses will no longer be allowed on trails in Haw Ridge Park in Oak Ridge.

Horses have significantly damaged trails, especially the small, narrow ones common in the park, a city press release said. The animals have eroded trails, left manure piles, and damaged bridge and boardwalk structures, the release said.
