Taste of Anderson County offers local food, music; benefits United Way, Free Medical

The Seventh Annual Taste of Anderson County will be at Jackson Square on Saturday, September 19, and it will feature food and local musicians.

Visitors will be able to enjoy a sampling of food from some of Anderson County’s best restaurants, which will showcase their fare in small, taste-sized portions, a press release said.

“This event is a great opportunity for local restaurants to share some of their favorite dishes, while proceeds will benefit the United Way of Anderson County and the Free Medical Clinic,” the release said.

“Tastes” from each vendor will be priced from $1 to $4 per item. Tickets will be available to purchase for $1 at entrances to the event. Attendees may buy as many tickets as they like; in addition, beer and wine will be available for sale. [Read more…]

A June 30 forum will focus on workers compensation reforms in Tennessee.

During the forum, Dr. Robert B. Snyder, medical director for the Division of Workers’ Compensation and Jeff Francis, assistant administrator in the Workers’ Compensation Division, Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development, will present a seminar titled “Overview of Tennessee Workers’ Compensation—2015.”

It’s been organized by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce and scheduled for Tuesday, June 30, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at the Goff Medical Sciences Building, Goff 104, at Roane State Community College at 701 Briarcliff Avenue in Oak Ridge. Firefighters, business owner to lead fire safety seminar for businesses

A business owner and firefighters from Oak Ridge and Clinton will lead a fire safety seminar for businesses in Clinton on Tuesday.

The seminar is titled “Fire Safety and Prevention in Your Workplace and Business.” It will be led by Chip Dooley, owner of Life Safety Inspections in Oak Ridge; Josh Waldo, deputy fire chief for the Oak Ridge Fire Department; and Daniel Adams, firefighter for the Clinton Fire Department.

The seminar is scheduled from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 23, at the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce in Clinton. It’s part of the Chamber’s summer business safety series, and it’s sponsored by Life Safety Inspections.

“The best way to practice fire safety is to make sure one doesn’t break out in the first place,” a press release said. “This means being aware of potential hazards in your business.” [Read more…]

Hibbett Sports store could open in Clinton this summer

Hibbett Sporting Goods Inc., the national sporting goods retailer based in Birmingham, Alabama, plans to open a store in Clinton this summer.

The company announced on Tuesday that it had executed a lease for the new Hibbett Sports store at Centre Plaza, which is on North Charles G. Seivers Boulevard near the Clinch River and across the Boulevard from Hammer’s.

The company expects to employ eight full and part-time workers at the new store. Currently, Hibbett has 62 locations in the state of Tennessee, including one in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

Anderson County Chamber announces business awards, celebrates Friday

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce has announced the winners of its Tribute to Business Awards, and they’ll celebrate in a Friday evening ceremony.

Here are the award winners:

  • Small Business—Allstate-The Erb Agency,
  • Mid-Sized Business—Tennessee Tool and Engineering Inc.,
  • Large Business—Aisin and SL Tennessee LLC, and
  • Woman-Owned Business—Dream Dance Studio Inc.

“Everyone is invited to join us in honoring these businesses for their contribution to the economic growth of Anderson County,” a press release said.

The celebration will take place at the Museum of Appalachia at 2819 Andersonville Highway in Clinton on Friday, June 5. The evening will begin at 6:30 p.m. with valet parking, social hour, photos, wine grab, and live music, the release said. 2015 US 25 Yard Sale returns to Berea, also Clinton, AC

One leg of the US 25 Yard Sale will return to Clinton, Rocky Top, and Anderson County for the fourth time in early June.

The yard sale is scheduled for June 4-6. It stretches 565 miles from Woodfin, North Carolina, and Clinton, Tennessee, to Covington, Kentucky.

“This event has quickly become the nation’s fourth-longest yard sale event,” organizers said.

“Our goal is to get folks off I-75 and get them to slow down and visit our downtowns,” a press release said. “And we encourage people to have a huge yard sale to get folks to visit! Almost very city, village and town along the route participates.” [Read more…]

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce will host a job fair to recruit employees for local businesses and industries on Thursday, April 30, at the New Hope Center. This one-day event, which is scheduled from 3-7 p.m. April 30, allows job seekers to connect face-to-face with local businesses and industries seeking employees, a press release said.

The New Hope Center is at 602 Scarboro Road at the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge.

The Anderson County Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Tennessee Small Business Development Center will host a free workshop for potential and existing small business owners and entrepreneurs who want a better understanding of the business planning process.

The TSBDC advises and assists entrepreneurs and small business owners in our area at no cost to them.

Kellye Wilson, co-owner of Star Farm in Anderson County, will discuss the “Farm to Table” movement and the trend toward organically grown produce during a Wednesday presentation in Oak Ridge.

Wilson will be the featured speaker at a Wednesday luncheon meeting of the Altrusa Club of Oak Ridge. That meeting on Wednesday, March 25, will be at the DoubleTree Hotel.

Volunteers needed to help clean up Norris Lake

The Norris Lake Project Team is looking for volunteers to help with the fifth biannual Five County Norris Lake Cleanup on March 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“Since 2011, volunteers from the counties surrounding Norris Lake have picked up over 15 tons of trash,” said Stephanie Wells, director of the Anderson County Tourism Council. “We continue to conduct two cleanups each year because Norris Lake is not only a recreational destination for residents and visitors, it is an economic driver for all five counties and we need to protect its shorelines.”

There will be several launch points in each of the five counties and numerous locations that volunteers can help by picking up and properly disposing of in trash. [Read more…]
