The Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge received six of 18 sustainability awards announced by the National Nuclear Security Administration on Tuesday.

The NNSA said the awards were for innovation and excellence at its national laboratories and sites. They recognize exemplary individual and team performance in advancing sustainability goals through innovative and effective programs and projects that increase energy, water, and fleet efficiency, and reduce greenhouse gases, pollution and waste, a press release said.

“I congratulate the winners of this year’s sustainability awards and all those involved in our efforts to implement environmentally responsible and sustainable operations and projects,” said James McConnell, NNSA acting associate administrator for infrastructure and operations. “NNSA will continue striving to develop new and creative solutions to minimize the environmental impact of our vital national security mission.” [Read more…]

Lake City has Nov. 1 public meeting on changing name to Rocky Top

Lake City residents who want more information about a proposal to change their city’s name to Rocky Top as the first step toward the creation of an amusement destination with a water park, restaurant, and theaters tied together by the area’s coal mining history will get a chance to get that information and share their opinions during a public meeting scheduled for Friday, Nov. 1, at 6 p.m. in the Family Life Center of Main Street Baptist Church.

The Lake City Council will consider the name change on Thursday, Nov. 7. If approved, the change would have to be approved by the General Assembly. [Read more…]

Winning $250,000 lottery ticket sold in Oak Ridge

The Tennessee Lottery said that someone purchased a winning lottery ticket worth $250,000 in Oak Ridge.

The ticket was bought for last weekend’s $55 million jackpot, which no one won. The winning ticket holder has not yet come forward, but we will let you know when they do.

Tom Brokaw, one of America’s best-known journalists, will be in Knoxville on Nov. 13 to give the Baker Distinguished Lecture at the University of Tennessee.

Brokaw is a former anchor for NBC News, and he is also an author and special correspondent for NBC News. He will speak at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 13 in the University Center Auditorium.

The lecture is presented by the Howard H. Baker Jr. Center for Public Policy. It is free and open to the public, but reservations must be made. Seats will be held only until 10 minutes before the event begins. Brown-Forman Donation to Roane Alliance Education Matters

Tennessee Sen. Ken Yager on Thursday announced a new partner for the continued funding of The Roane Alliance’s award-winning Education Matters! program. Yager presented a $5,000 check at the beginning of the Roane County Chamber of Commerce regular monthly board meeting.

Yager presented the check to Allen Lutz, education and workforce development specialist for the Roane Alliance, on behalf of Brown-Forman—the global, multi-billion dollar company that produces and markets Jack Daniel’s Tennessee whiskey.

The Brown-Forman donation comes on the heels of the Alliance’s Education Matters! program receiving an international economic development award earlier this month. The Roane County program won a Gold Award for Excellence in Economic Development (category 25,000-200,000 population) from the International Economic Development Council at their annual conference in Philadelphia. Representatives of Oak Ridge High School, selected as one of the best three public high schools in Tennessee for growth in student achievement, will be in Nashville on Oct. 28, when they hope the school wins top honors at the SCORE Prize event.

Leaders, teachers, parents, and students of Oak Ridge High School, selected as one of the best three public high schools in Tennessee for growth in student achievement, will be in Nashville on Oct. 28, when they hope to win top honors at the SCORE Prize event.

The SCORE Prize, sponsored by the State Collaborative on Reforming Education, or SCORE, is the hallmark award for Tennessee public schools and districts that have made the greatest gains in student achievement. The prize will be awarded during an event that begins at 6 p.m., Oct. 28, at Laura Turner Concert Hall, Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville.

SCORE is an independent, nonprofit, and nonpartisan education advocacy and research institution that works collaboratively to support Tennessee’s work to prepare students for college and the workforce and was founded by Bill Frist, former U.S. Senate majority leader. [Read more…]

Rebekah Nwangwa has been named public affairs specialist for the National Nuclear Security Administration Production Office, or NPO.

In her new position, Nwangwa is responsible for supporting NNSA communications programs through news media relations, employee communications, emergency public information, and community and intergovernmental relations, a press release said. Nwangwa will also oversee real property activities and other activities in the NPO Business and Contract Management organization.

Nwangwa joined the former Y-12 Site Office in 2011 as an intern under the NNSA Student Career Experience Program. She received a dual degree in law and master’s of public administration from the University of Tennessee College Of Law in 2013 and a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Vanderbilt University in 2009. Clinton Library starts autumn with children’s programs

Clinton Public Library is getting into the autumn season with a series of children’s programs.

“Join us for stories about friendly monsters on Oct. 21 and Oct. 23, and Halloween fun on Oct. 28 and Oct. 30,” a press release said. All story time programs begin at 10:30 a.m.

On Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m., the library is celebrating the fall harvest with a “Down on the Farm”-themed Super Story Saturday. [Read more…]

Great Smoky Mountains National Park officially reopened on Thursday, Oct. 17, under federal funding.

The park had been closed for the first two weeks of October during the peak fall tourist season due to a lapse in Congressional appropriations.

The park and its facilities had originally reopened to the public on Wednesday, Oct. 16, due to the donation of funds from the states of Tennessee and North Carolina, who worked in partnership with Blount and Sevier counties. Their funding would have allowed the park to stay open for five days. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce is busy preparing for its annual Christmas Parade to be held on Saturday, Dec. 14. This year’s theme is “Inside Santa’s Workshop” and promises to provide spectators with plenty of music, lights, and beautiful floats, a press release said. Businesses and community organizations have already begun registering for the parade.

The parade will begin at 6 p.m. and will begin at Corporate Center, on the corner of Lafayette and Laboratory Road. From there, the parade will travel down Lafayette to the Oak Ridge Turnpike. It will continue west on the Turnpike to Oak Ridge High School. The judge’s stand will be located in front of the Chamber. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce member businesses are preparing for the 2013 Primetime Tailgate Party, the Chamber’s premiere business showcase and networking event.

Participating businesses have been encouraged to come dressed in their favorite team colors and to decorate their display areas with a football tailgate theme. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 24, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the parking lot of the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce at 1400 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
