Sewer rehabilitation continues for the month of August 2015 with Morgan Contracting, working under contract for the City of Oak Ridge, rehabilitating the city’s sewer collection pipes within city easements in yards and in roadways. Residents should have already received letters on colored paper (green for Morgan Contracting) and door hangers providing general information and the applicable contractor’s contact information.
Motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists are urged to use extra care and caution when traveling on the streets with sewer work areas, a press release said. Temporary road repairs will be made and loose gravel should be expected until the patches are permanently paved.
All construction work is subject to change based on such unknowns as weather, equipment and access issues. The construction work schedule for the month beginning August 3 is as follows: [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Public Works Department continues to use state-of-the-art technology to perform inspections of the city’s sewer system, a press release said.
This technology employs a sonar machine that emits a repeating series of tones, similar to a musical scale. In open areas, it can be heard over long distances. While harmless, the tones emitted by the machine are low enough in frequency that residents nearby may be able to feel and, in some instances, hear them. [Read more…]

Anderson, Carter, Sumner, and Unicoi counties align with 15 established communities
NASHVILLE—Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Commissioner Kevin Triplett announced last week that Anderson, Carter, Sumner, and Unicoi counties have been added to Retire Tennessee, the state’s retiree recruitment marketing program. That brings the total number of active Retire Tennessee counties to 19, a press release said.
“It’s great to officially add four new counties to this important state program,” Triplett said. “Tennessee has much to offer people making retirement decisions based on quality of life and cost of living. Our state has the lowest cost of living in the Southeast and second lowest in the nation, no state income tax, and low property tax. Add to that, the state’s breathtaking scenic beauty and unparalleled hospitality, and it’s only natural Tennessee would rank high among the population relocating after retirement.”
The four counties join Cumberland, Franklin, Hamblen, Hamilton, Hardin, Jefferson, Loudon, Maury, Putnam, Rhea, Roane, Robertson, Sullivan, Warren, and White counties as Retire Tennessee counties. Now in its ninth year, Retire Tennessee inspired more than 10,000 inquiries from potential retirees last year. Tennessee is one of only four states with retiree recruitment as a formal program and continues to gain momentum as a potential retirement destination for more than 78 million baby boomers. A man who had threatened to commit suicide with a gun at a home on Robertsville Road gave up his weapon after several hours of negotiations on Thursday night, authorities said.
The Oak Ridge Police Department received the call at about 8:42 p.m. Thursday, a press release said.
“As tactical officers stood by, an ORPD crisis negotiator spent several hours persuading him to come outside to speak with officers,” the release said. “When the man came outside, he insisted he had no intention of harming himself, and voluntarily handed a firearm over to them for safekeeping. After officers verified his wellbeing, he was allowed to return to his home.”
