The first waterfront Nine Lakes Wine Festival will be at Melton Lake Park in Oak Ridge in May.
This two-day festival will offer a Winemakers Dinner on May 19, and a Grand Tasting on Saturday, May 20. There are expected to be 100 Tennessee wines from 20 wineries, live music, and food. [Read more…]

The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge has a new mascot.
The newest addition to the Children’s Museum was recently unveiled at its annual Holiday Gala. As supporters gathered to celebrate the holidays, Board President Tom Beehan, Executive Director Beth Shea, and Marketing Chair Gene Patterson introduced the crowd to Charlie the Curious Bear, the museum’s new mascot.
The image of the cuddly brown bear, with expressive eyes, wearing blue bib overalls and cap, was inspired by student Loren Hart, who took part in an art competition in the Oak Ridge Schools to create the museum’s new mascot. [Read more…]
The Oak Ridge Public Works Department will be performing road repairs on the gravel section of Tuskegee Drive beginning Wednesday, January 18, and lasting until Wednesday, January 25.
The work will require sections of the road to be closed on weekdays between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m., weather permitting. Provisions will be made for residents to access their properties. There will be no through traffic during the closure. [Read more…]

The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society will present a program on global warming and climate change on Thursday in Oak Ridge.
The program, titled “It’s all in the Timing: Impacts of Global Warming on Ecosystems and Phenology,” is scheduled from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 19, in the City Room at Roane State Community College.
It will be presented by Joanne Logan, who is an associate professor at the University of Tennessee and a renowned expert on the subject, a press release said. Logan is an associate professor in the UT Department of Biosystems Engineering and Soil Science. She has studied applied and agricultural climatology for 30 years, and she directs the undergraduate program in environmental and soil siences, the press release said. [Read more…]
Thanks to the work of Safe Kids, the Oak Ridge Police Department, and the Oak Ridge Fire Department, preschool students are now riding safely on the playground with new helmets.
Tribby Kelly, compliance monitor at Oak Ridge Preschool, said students ride tricycles and other wheeled toys at school, and they are now required to wear helmets while riding.
As students had helmet fittings, the officers were encouraging them to repeat the simple words, “Wear it!” [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge High School Choral Ensemble, conducted by Amanda Ragan, impressed the Tennessee House of Representatives as they performed “God Bless America” and “The Star Spangled Banner” in the House Chambers on Thursday, January 12, in Nashville, a press release said.
The ensemble students experienced a full day on the Hill, complete with meeting Governor Bill Haslam, debating the upcoming Tennessee gas tax issue in a mock Senate Session led by Lieutenant Governor Randy McNally of Oak Ridge, and touring the Capitol Building with Representative John Ragan of Oak Ridge. The Oak Ridge Police Department, Oak Ridge Fire Department, and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Safe Kids program are hosting six child passenger seat checkpoints in 2017. The first was scheduled for Saturday, January 14.
These events are held for parents and caregivers to receive education material about car seats, have their car seats checked for any manufacturer recalls, and also have the seats examined for proper installation, a media advisory said. The child passenger seat checkpoint is open to the public, and it is free for participants to attend.

Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson will discuss what the city needs to do to stay competitive in today’s economic development market during a Tuesday lunch.
Watson will be at Lunch with the League from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 17, in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
Watson has been Oak Ridge city manager since August 2010. Before coming to Oak Ridge, he served as city manager of six cities in Texas, Montana, and Arizona. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas, where he received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration, a press release said. On Thursday, the Anderson County Board of Education approved construction of a multi-use facility at Clinton High School, a project estimated to cost around $1.2 million. Ground could be broken as early as March 1 with a targeted opening in August.
The new facility will allow sports teams as well as band members, dance team members, cheerleaders, and others to have a dedicated practice space instead of having to use hallways or the school cafeteria. The facility will also be used by the CHS Robotics team.
Initial plans called for a state-of-the-art sound system throughout the facility as well as men’s and women’s showers and locker rooms. [Read more…]

UT-Battelle, the managing contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, made the final installment of a $250,000 pledge by presenting a $50,000 check in late December to the Emory Valley Center, a community facility that serves people with disabilities, a press release said.
UT-Battelle made the pledge in 2011 when the Emory Valley Center, which provides services and support for adults and children with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities, began a building program to replace its aging structure. The center’s new building is now under construction.

Tennessee Senator Randy McNally, an Oak Ridge Republican who is now lieutenant governor and speaker of the Senate, will discuss public service and growing up in Oak Ridge during a meeting this evening (Thursday, January 12).
McNally’s talk will be at a 7 p.m. meeting of the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association in the Midtown Community Center at 102 Robertsville Road.
McNally, a legislative leader for nearly 40 years, became lieutenant governor and speaker of the Senate on Tuesday on the first organizational day of the 110th General Assembly. He is only the second Republican Tennessee Senate Speaker in modern history and the first from Anderson County in nearly 150 years. [Read more…]
A Clinton man died Tuesday morning in a residential fire at Cedar Grove Mobile Home Park near Clinton, authorities said.
David Earl Floyd, 25, was found after deputies and fire crews were called to a mobile home fire on Cedar Grove Lane about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department said.
Firefighters from the Marlow, Claxton, Andersonville, and Clinton fire departments, along with Anderson County EMS, responded to the blaze. [Read more…]
