The Third Annual “Divas for a Cure” Relay for Life event is Saturday, March 4, in Oak Ridge.
It’s sponsored by Team Got Hope, and it is scheduled from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at High Places Community Church in the Grove Center in Oak Ridge.

Indigenous Vibes, a culture-based entertainment group that creates positive vibrations using traditional West African drums, will be the featured performer when the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge hosts its annual International Festival on Saturday, February 18.
Led by Obayana Ajanaku, Indigenous Vibes drummers use the djembe drums to bring the message of diversity, confidence, unity, and pride through their entertainment, a press release said. The festival audience will be invited to participate in dancing to the drum rhythm.
The family-friendly International Festival will present entertainment, crafts, and cuisines from cultures around the world, with musical and dance entertainment on stage throughout the day and crafts for children to make and take home, the press release said.
The festival entertainment will be from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. February 18 at the Children’s Museum, which is at 461 West Outer Drive, with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. [Read more…]

Organizers said they expected about 70 people. Instead, roughly 500 people showed up.
It was the “Standing in Solidarity” event hosted by the Anderson County Democratic Party at Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church on Saturday, January 21.
The purpose was to show support with the worldwide protests of President Donald Trump, said Scott Julius of the Anderson County Democratic Party. He said there were tables from 20 different progressive organizations at the January 21 event.

The ASAP Ambassadors Youth Coalition from Anderson County, Clinton, and Oak Ridge high schools celebrated National Drug and Alcohol Facts week last week. Aiming to increase their peers’ awareness of the dangers of drugs and alcohol, the student-led group organized the event.
Students from the three high schools tested their knowledge on drugs and drug abuse by taking the 2017 National Drug and Alcohol IQ Challenge during their school’s lunch periods. Student contestants answered questions in a buzzer style trivia game related to mental health, marijuana, and other drugs.
With the support of Project AWARE and Chick-fil-A, the event was a crowd-pleasing success, but most importantly, students gained valuable knowledge. [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Public Works Department will be performing right-of-way maintenance on Edgemoor Road beginning Monday, February 6. This work could cause delays for drivers in the area, a press release said.
The maintenance project is estimated to be complete by Friday, February 17, providing there are no issues with weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the press release said. The road work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday. Motorists should expect some delay in the flow of traffic during this time. [Read more…]

The Robertsville Middle School Technology Student Association competed in the 2017 East Tennessee Regional Conference at Roane State Community College in Harriman on Friday, January 27. The RMS regional team consisted of 22 students from sixth grade to eighth grade.

Compliance with this international standard demonstrates the highest level of accuracy for testing and calibration
The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education’s (ORISE) Radiological and Environmental Analytical Laboratory has received A2LA accreditation for ISO/IEC 17025, an international standard that ensures the quality and accuracy of laboratory equipment calibration and sampling analysis. A2LA, short for American Association for Laboratory Accreditation, is an accreditation body that confirms laboratory compliance with ISO/IEC 17025.
To achieve the accreditation, A2LA conducted a rigorous evaluation of the laboratory’s technical competence and quality management systems. The assessment began with a significant gap analysis, which had more than 1,000 lines of inquiries detailing the requirements for a proper management system, a sound quality system, and a competent technical system of sample analysis. The evaluation also required a four-day, onsite assessment performed by an A2LA inspector, a press release said.
“When it comes to laboratory testing and equipment calibration, ISO/IEC 17025 is the highest standard of quality in the world,” said Andy Page, president and chief executive officer for ORAU, the managing contractor for ORISE. “This distinction is a great differentiator for ORISE, and it provides our customers with the assurance that the Radiological and Environmental Analytical Laboratory is able to consistently produce accurate and precise results.” [Read more…]
Chief Danny Humphrey, who serves as Norris public safety director, will retire in March, according to the Norris Bulletin.
Humphrey, who has had a 39-year career in law enforcement, is in charge of the Norris Police and Volunteer Fire Department.
He worked for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department for almost 18 years before he joined the Norris Police force, the Norris Bulletin said. Humphrey was named chief by former Norris City Manager Benny Carden in 1999.

Kinga Unocic, researcher at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has received the 2017 Young Leaders International Scholar Award from The Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society.
Unocic is a materials scientist in the Microscopy and Corrosion Science and Technology group, and she has contributed to the ORNL Bioenergy Technologies Program. Her current research uses transmission electron microscopy methods to study the performance and reliability of materials under extreme conditions, investigate the structure of materials processed by additive manufacturing, and accelerate catalyst synthesis and development for bioenergy technology, a press release said. An official from Roane State Community College will provide an overview of the college’s Middle College during a Tuesday meeting.
Diane Ward, vice president for student learning at Roane State Community College, will be the guest speaker at Lunch with the League on Tuesday, February 7. The program will be held at noon in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, which is located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. The public is invited.
“Middle College is a program where rising high school juniors carry a full college schedule in the morning and a high school schedule in the afternoon,” Ward said in a press release. “The goal is for these students to obtain a high school diploma and an associate’s degree at the same time. First United Methodist Church has its Third Annual Community-wide Valentine’s Dance on Saturday, February 11.
The Valentine’s Day dance is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. February 11 in the Multipurpose Room at First United Methodist Church, which is at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike.
“Come dressed to impress for a fun-filled night of dancing and fellowship!” a press release said.
