The City of Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge Schools, and Community Wellness and Safety Fair is scheduled for Wednesday, April 5, at the Oak Ridge Civic Center.
The fair is open to all Oak Ridge city employees, Oak Ridge Schools employees, retirees, and their families. The entire Oak Ridge community is also invited to participate.

The Third Annual “Divas for a Cure” Relay for Life event is Saturday, March 4, in Oak Ridge.
It’s sponsored by Team Got Hope, and it is scheduled from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, March 4, at High Places Community Church in the Grove Center in Oak Ridge.

Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers has been nominated by Anderson County Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention as a candidate for the 2017 Anderson County Ally of the Year Award.
Candidates were nominated by community members based on their passion for creating a healthier and more productive Anderson County. These candidates are united by one goal: to use their leadership, influence, and communication skills to raise funds to help prevent and reduce substance abuse in Anderson County, a press release said. Each dollar raised by the candidates will count as one vote. The person with the most votes will be named ASAP’s Anderson County Ally of the Year and be recognized at a luncheon on February 3. A new dental practice opened in Oak Ridge in the fall.
The dental practice is called Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry of Tennessee, and it’s in the Professional Village on East Division Road in central Oak Ridge. It’s owned by Dr. Adam Wohl, who graduated from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the UT Health Science Center College of Dentistry in Memphis in May.
Dentistry runs in the family. Wohl’s father, Barry Wohl, was a periodontist in Oak Ridge for a long time before retiring 20 years ago. He practiced next to Dr. G.R. Birdwell on Laboratory Road and built those buildings. Adam Wohl said his grandfather was a dentist in Connecticut, and a few cousins are also dentists.
Wohl, who is from West Knoxville, has ties to the area, and he said everyone was good to his father here. [Read more…]
The Oak Ridge Police Department, Oak Ridge Fire Department, and East Tennessee Children’s Hospital Safe Kids program are hosting six child passenger seat checkpoints in 2017. The first was scheduled for Saturday, January 14.
These events are held for parents and caregivers to receive education material about car seats, have their car seats checked for any manufacturer recalls, and also have the seats examined for proper installation, a media advisory said. The child passenger seat checkpoint is open to the public, and it is free for participants to attend.

UT-Battelle, the managing contractor for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, made the final installment of a $250,000 pledge by presenting a $50,000 check in late December to the Emory Valley Center, a community facility that serves people with disabilities, a press release said.
UT-Battelle made the pledge in 2011 when the Emory Valley Center, which provides services and support for adults and children with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities, began a building program to replace its aging structure. The center’s new building is now under construction.

Briar Mays said she started noticing it last September—her right leg and hip were hurting.
During warm-ups and workouts as a freshman member of the Roane State Community College women’s softball team, Briar said she had to use her arms to pull her legs up for some exercises.
Physical therapy was recommended and undertaken, but that didn’t help ease the pain.
Still, the 18-year-old former standout for Forrest High School’s softball team in tiny Chapel Hill, Tennessee, finished out last fall’s season for the Roane State squad, playing left field.
It was only after an MRI in January that Briar received the devastating news: she had cancer. [Read more…]

At the Rocky Top City Council meeting last week, Mayor Michael Lovely, Police Chief Jim Shetterly, and City Manager Michael Foster presented a check for $500 to Stephanie Strutner, executive director of Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention of Anderson County Inc., to support the Family Drug Treatment Court of Anderson County.
“The Family Drug Treatment Court has been under development for a number of years based on best practices from effective programs from across the country,” Strutner said. The program is geared toward rehabilitating not only adolescents through the Juvenile Court system, but their family unit as well, a press release said.
“This program offers the possibility to break the generational cycle of substance abuse many of our juvenile offenders experience,” Juvenile Court Judge Brian Hunt said. “It also offers hope—hope that these adolescents can stay out of jail as adults and become contributing members of their community.” [Read more…]
No matter the length, every child’s life leaves an impression on a parent’s heart. That’s why the Walk to Remember was established 16 years ago. The national event brings together parents, nurses, and caregivers who’ve lost children. It is a time to celebrate the lives of children who’ve passed away, a time to share memories and remember the life of a child.
Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge will host the Walk to Remember on Sunday, October 30, from 2-4 p.m. at the University of Tennessee Arboretum, located at 901 South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge. (The walk will be canceled in the event of rain.)
Whether you are a parent who has lost a child of any age or a nurse or caregiver of a child, all are invited to attend the walk, bring mementos, and take part in a remembrance ceremony, a press release said. Walk to Remember is a free memorial walk sponsored by Methodist Medical Center. You can get rid of unused, unwanted, or expired prescription or non-prescription medicines on Saturday. It’s National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day.
You can drop off the medications at locations in Clinton, Norris, Oak Ridge, Oliver Springs, and Rocky Top.
The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications, a press release said.
Oak Ridge and Anderson County participate by encouraging residents across the city and county to properly dispose of their unused, unwanted, or expired prescription or non-prescription medicines, the press release said. Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention (ASAP) of Anderson County has partnered with the Oak Ridge Police Department and other law enforcement agencies throughout the county to give two convenient options to residents for proper medicine disposal. The Oak Ridge Breast Center now offers 3D mammography or digital breast tomosynthesis, the newest advancement in breast screening technology. It allows radiologists to see around and between breast tissues with greater clarity than ever before, a press release said. These more defined images may help detect cancer earlier and the x-ray exposure and screening procedure is performed like a traditional 2D mammogram.
