Westcott’s 95th birthday will be celebrated Jan. 21

The family of Ed Westcott, the official government photographer in Oak Ridge during World War II, is inviting the community to celebrate his 95th birthday on Saturday, January 21.

The birthday celebration is at 2 p.m. January 21 in the Wildcat Den at Midtown Community Center at 102 Robertsville Avenue in Oak Ridge.

Westcott was the only authorized photographer in Oak Ridge during the Manhattan Project, a top-secret federal project to build the world’s first atomic bombs—before Germany could. Oak Ridge was a production site for the Manhattan Project, and the city, which was then known as Clinton Engineer Works, enriched uranium for the first atomic bomb used in wartime. [Read more…]

Free women’s self-defense seminar is Saturday

Progressive Martial Arts Academy in Oak Ridge has a free women’s self-defense seminar on Saturday.

The seminar starts at 2 p.m. Saturday. It’s a two-hour edition of the course, and space is available, said David Corrigan, owner and chief instructor at Progressive Martial Arts Academy.

Interfaith Dialogue to discuss favorite books on Monday

Members of the Oak Ridge Interfaith Dialogue group each have at least one favorite book that they find important and interesting, and at a Monday meeting, they can share these books with interfaith friends.

All those who attend will be encouraged to bring a book with them to display for the meeting. A few members have agreed in advance to present on a selected book at the meeting, which will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 9, in the Entry Forum of the Jewish Congregation at 101 West Madison Lane in Oak Ridge.

Starting Monday, 12 local restaurants to participate in ADFAC’s Dine & Donate

Starting on Monday, 12 local restaurants will participate in ADFAC’s “A Year of Dine & Donate.”

On Dine & Donate Mondays (the second Monday of each month), the restaurants listed below will donate a significant portion of their daily sales to ADFAC.

A Tuesday program will focus on the construction of the city that is now Oak Ridge through Ed Westcott photographs.

The program is titled “The Building of the Atomic City—the Ed Wescott Photographs.” It will be presented by Emily Hunnicutt, Ed Westcott’s daughter, and Don Hunnicutt, Westcott’s son-in-law.

Westcott was the official photographer for the federal government in the city, which was once known as Clinton Engineer Works, during World War II. Oak Ridge was built as part of the top-secret Manhattan Project, a program to build the world’s first atomic bombs, before Germany could.

The Tuesday program is at noon at the University of Tennessee Resource Center at 1201 Oak Ridge Turnpike. It includes a lunch, and it’s sponsored by Friends of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, or FORNL. This meeting is open to the public. [Read more…]

First United Methodist Church celebrates renovation in open house Sunday

First United Methodist Church has an open house today to celebrate a recent renovation.

The open house is from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, January 8.

During the $600,000 renovation, the church upgraded audio visuals in both worship spaces, erected two new signs, and completely renovated the youth loft, second floor restrooms, hallways, welcome center, and classrooms. [Read more…]

Children’s Museum closed due to snow, city centers opened at noon

The Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge is closed today (Saturday, January 7) due to the weather. The Amateur Radio Kids Day scheduled for this afternoon is canceled.

The museum will call those who had birthday parties scheduled for today to reschedule.

“The safety of our visitors and staff are important to us,” the Children’s Museum said.

Oak Ridge City Manager Mark Watson delayed the opening of the Civic Center, Scarboro Center, and Senior Center until noon. The library also opened at noon.

Senior Advisory Board to continue discussing move to Civic Center

The Oak Ridge Senior Advisory Board on Monday is scheduled to continue discussing the move of the Oak Ridge Senior Center to the Oak Ridge Civic Center.

The meeting starts at 9:30 a.m. Monday, January 9, in Room 54 of the Senior Center, which is at 728 Emory Valley Road.

Since the presidential election, a variety of explanations have emerged for the victory of President-elect Donald Trump, a win that surprised many political analysts and pollsters. These explanations have addressed demographic, cultural, and political shifts.

Jon Shefner, head of the Sociology Department at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville will examine these explanations, offer his own analysis, and think about the way forward in this new political landscape at Lunch with the League on Tuesday, January 3. ORNL researcher to discuss stream ecology research on Tuesday

Oak Ridge National Laboratory researcher Natalie Griffiths will talk about stream ecology research she’s been involved in and the lessons to be learned from her research at the upcoming Emory River Watershed Association, or ERWA, Annual Meeting on Tuesday, January 3, at the Obed Wild and Scenic River Visitor Center.

The 6 p.m. meeting will also feature a report on the Crooked Fork project by Mike Sale. There is no charge for attending the meeting, and there will be a potluck supper. The objectives of the Oak Ridge Panhellenic Alumnae Association are:

  • To promote interfraternity friendships and cooperation
  • To publicize the high ideals, purposes, and accomplishments of the fraternity system
  • To further interest in community service and philanthropic efforts

Oak Ridge Panhellenic is made up of a cross section of community-spirited women who meet monthly to exchange idea, learn from programs presented, hold business meetings, and have fun. Programs range from gardening ideas, overview of bee keeping, visiting resources in the community, and dining at local restaurants. There is a wide range of ages among its members.
