Grace Lutheran hosts candle lighting service on May 7

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and in observance, Grace Lutheran Church will host a candle lighting service in support of those challenged by mental illness, substance use disorders, and other brain disorders. The service will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 5 p.m. in the church sanctuary, which is at 131 West Gettysburg Avenue in Oak Ridge.

This is a free community event, and everyone is invited to attend. A special invitation is extended to family members, caregivers, community support organizations, and the healing professions.

According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), more than 60 million American adults experience mental illness in a given year. About 13.6 million of those live with a serious mental illness such as schizophrenia, major depression or bipolar disorder. [Read more…]

Today: ASAP helps ORPD, CPD take back expired, unwanted prescription drugs

You can dispose of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs today in Oak Ridge and Clinton.

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 30, at the Oak Ridge Police Department and Clinton Police Department. Allies for Substance Abuse Prevention of Anderson County and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration are helping with the event.

It’s the 11th time in six years that an event like this has been held, a press release said.

You can bring your pills for disposal to the ORPD at 200 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge or to the Clinton Police Department at 125 West Broad Street in Clinton. The DEA cannot accept liquids, needles, or sharps, only pills or patches. The service is free and anonymous. No questions will be asked, the press release said. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge mayor to give ‘State of City’ talk at Lunch with League on Tuesday

Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch will give his “State of the City” address at the next Lunch with the League on Tuesday, May 3. The talk is scheduled to start at noon in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, located at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Gooch was elected to the Oak Ridge City Council in November 2014 and later selected by Council members to serve as mayor.

Gooch received his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee with high honors, and he has practiced law with the Knoxville firm Kramer Rayson since completing his legal education at the University of Tennessee College of Law in 1977. [Read more…]

Volunteers needed for Roane State Community Garden; learn more at April 28 meeting

Volunteers are invited to assist with the Roane State Community Garden, located near the college’s main campus in Harriman.

An informational meeting is scheduled for Thursday, April 28, at 4:30 p.m. in the Walden Ridge Conference Room on the main campus. The conference room is located within the student lounge.

The garden is open to everyone in the community along with all Roane State students and employees. Expert farmers and beginners are welcome. [Read more…]

Atomic City Sportsmen Club has annual golf tournament on June 18

The Atomic City Sportsmen Club has its 15th Annual Golf Tournament on June 18 in Oak Ridge.

The golf tournament starts at 8:30 a.m. June 18 at Centennial Golf Club at 101 Centennial Boulevard.

The entry fee is $75 per person and $90 on the day of the event (strictly enforced).

There is lunch, range balls, a goodie bag, and door prizes.

Arts and Antiques in the Square on Saturday

The merchants of Jackson Square invite you to join them this Saturday, April 30, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. for Arts and Antiques in the Square.

Artisans and dealers of vintage and antique items will be on hand to showcase their wares for purchase, a press release said.

CWU celebrates reconciliation, grace, friendship on May 6

Church Women United of Oak Ridge invites the public to its May Friendship Day celebration on Friday, May 6.

The celebration will feature a worship program titled “Finding Grace at the Table.” The program focuses on the table as a place for reconciliation and the need to recognize God presence in every person.

CWU will present Key Woman Awards to Mary Stephens and Judy Cohan for their dedicated service at Oak Valley Baptist Church and United Church, Chapel on the Hill, respectively, in addition to their contributions within the wider Oak Ridge community and Church Women United. [Read more…]

Glow Ninja 5K Run returns to Oak Ridge May 7

Registration is now open for the Third Annual Glow Ninja 5K race in Oak Ridge on Saturday night, May 7.

The “glow race” will kick off with the sounding of a gong at 8 p.m. Martial Arts demonstrations, hosted by event sponsor Progressive Martial Arts of Oak Ridge, will start at 7 p.m. To register for the race, visit www.ninja5k.com.

The race features a board-breaking opportunity for each participant at the finish line, which is one of the highlights each year.

“Progressive Martial Arts will be on site leading exciting, new demonstrations, and everyone is encouraged to dress up ninja-style for the event,” organizer Terri Reedy said. “Events like this one are sweeping the country because people are looking for something fun to do as a family. The executive director of the Los Alamos Historical Society will discuss Los Alamos and the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge on Tuesday.

Heather McClenahan is the featured guest speaker at the May 2016 membership and public meeting of the Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association. The meeting will star at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 3, at the Midtown Community Center at 103 Robertsville Road.

Her presentation is titled “Los Alamos and the Manhattan Project: 1.5 Million Years of History in One Hour.” [Read more…]

Girls Inc. receives funding from Panhellenic Council for Operation SMART

Girls Incorporated of Oak Ridge has received a generous contribution from the Panhellenic Council that will support the Girls Inc. Operation SMART program, a press release said.

“This contribution provides funding for the agency to fulfill its mission of inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold by encouraging the development of girls in the STEM fields,” a press release said. “The Operation SMART program helps girls develop an enthusiasm for and skills in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Through hands-on activities, girls explore, ask questions, persist, and solve problems. The funding provided girls with vegetables to plant, Legos and a Lego table, owl pellet dissection kits, lab equipment, a wooden workbench, and other STEM supplies to enhance the program.” [Read more…]

Community Matters leaders report back at ORHS on Sunday

The leaders of the Community Matters series of forums held last fall will report back on what they’ve learned at Oak Ridge High School on Sunday.

The informational session is scheduled from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday, April 24. All Oak Ridge residents are invited to attend.

This event will feature community leaders including Oak Ridge Mayor Warren Gooch, Police Chief Jim Akagi, ORHS Principal Martin McDonald, and leading pastors in town, all to continue the conversation begun last fall, a press release said.

“In the last couple of years, communities around the country have engaged the conversation sparked by Black Lives Matter,” the press release said. “In some communities, this has looked like protest. In others, it has looked like study and reflection.” [Read more…]

Some of Oak Ridge’s history before the 1930s will be discussed at the AAUW Oak Ridge Branch’s general meeting on Monday, April 25, when David Hackett, ethno-historian, will talk about the Emery Trace, which ran through Oak Ridge in the 18th century and made connection with the more well-known Natchez Trace. He will talk about the road’s origins and role in shaping the nation as well as its potential for heritage tourism, a press release said.

A lunch catered by The Soup Kitchen will be provided at the meeting at 11:30 a.m. at a cost of $8. Soup and sandwiches and cookies will be available. Reservations may be made by calling Marjorie Congdon at (865) 483-3120 or Mary Uziel at (865) 483-1043.

Anyone attending is asked to make a reservation to ensure enough seating at the meeting. It is not necessary to purchase lunch to attend, and people are welcome to bring sack lunches. [Read more…]
