ETTP Preservation Meeting

National Park Service employee Jeff Durbin, left, outlines three options for preserving the North Tower at East Tennessee Technology Park, the former K-25 site. Also pictured, at right, are Oak Ridge Mayor Tom Beehan and, second from right, City Manager Mark Watson.

A decade worth of discussions over whether to preserve a part of the historic K-25 uranium-enrichment building in west Oak Ridge could conclude at the end of this month.

A final plan has not been presented, but a final memorandum of agreement could be drafted by May 31, said Susan Cange, acting manager of the U.S. Department of Energy Environmental Management program in Oak Ridge.

Willow Brook Elementary

Mardee Miller, the former principal of Willow Brook Elementary School, was removed from her position on May 7. The school's front entrance is pictured above.

It’s still not clear why former Willow Brook Elementary School Principal Mardee D. Miller was removed from her job last week, but a letter released by the Oak Ridge school system Thursday provides a few details.

In the May 7 letter, Oak Ridge Superintendent Tom Bailey told Miller he was placing her on paid administrative leave after an investigation of “inappropriate treatment” of a student during state testing.

“I have come to the conclusion that I no longer have confidence in your ability to effectively or efficiently perform the duties of an elementary school principal in the Oak Ridge schools,” Bailey told Miller in the hand-delivered letter.

Union County mayor wants to withdraw from PlanET

PlanET Forum Oak Ridge

Regional leaders rank community issues during a recent PlanET forum at the Flatwater Grill in Oak Ridge.

Union County Mayor Micheal Williams wants the county to withdraw from a regional planning organization that recently held a series of public forums and drew some opposition from property rights advocates, including in Oak Ridge and Anderson County.

Named PlanET, the five-county organization includes Anderson, Blount, Loudon, Knox, and Union counties. Oak Ridge Mayor Tom Beehan is chair of its board of mayors.

“Union County is a rural county and is much smaller, as far as demographics are concerned, than the other counties which make up PlanET,” Williams wrote in a May 1 letter to the Knoxville Regional Transportation Planning Organization. “I feel that Union County would be better served if we promote ourselves as an individual county instead of grouping with the larger ones and being left behind.”
