Agle, Fillauer lead in early voting for school board

Angi Agle and Keys Fillauer, the two incumbents for Oak Ridge Board of Education, lead in early voting in Anderson County, according to unofficial results posted on the Anderson County Election Commission website on Tuesday evening.

Agle had 4,591 early votes, and Fillauer, the current board chair, had 4,195.

A third candidate, challenger Myra Mansfield, had 2,992.

Agle and Fillauer also have leads in early voting in Roane County, according to unofficial results posted at 8:33 p.m. Tuesday. Agle leads with 973 early votes, and Fillauer had 960.

Letter: Fillauer a strong leader, dedicated advocate for children

To the editor:

We are writing this letter in support of Keys Fillauer’s re-election to the Board of Education in the coming election.

Keys brings a unique perspective to the School Board. Not only did he teach at Robertsville Junior High School for 27 years and then at Oak Ridge High School for four years, he also coached basketball during his tenure at both schools.

He knows our community and its families well and is a dedicated advocate for our children. His strong leadership on the School Board over the last 15 years has guided the school system through many initiatives such as the remodeling of Oak Ridge High School and the 1:1 computer laptop program. BBB-TV, Channel 12 in Oak Ridge, has posted video from a candidate forum for Oak Ridge Board of Education.

The candidate forum was Thursday, September 29, at the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce.

There are three candidates for two school board seats in the November 8 election. The candidates are the two incumbents, Keys Fillauer and Angi Agle, and challenger Myra Mansfield.

The Progress PAC political action committee has endorsed the two incumbents running for Oak Ridge Board of Education: Angi Agle and Keys Fillauer.

“PAC board members feel these candidates best support the business community’s commitment toward exceptional schools and have expressed a willingness to partner with the Oak Ridge City Council on educational issues,” a press release said.

The Progress PAC endorsements for Oak Ridge City Council candidates will be announced later, said PAC Chairman Steve Whitson, an Oak Ridge resident.

“There are 10 candidates running for seven combined City Council and School Board seats, so decisions to endorse candidates are not made without lots of thought and discussion,” Whitson said in the press release. [Read more…]

Elks Lodge in Oak Ridge to host school board debate Oct. 3

The Elks Lodge in Oak Ridge will host a school board debate at 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 3.

The forum will be moderated by Mike Marsh, and the audience can submit written questions.

The Elks Lodge is at 684 Emory Valley Road in Oak Ridge.

Fillauer, the school board chair, seeks re-election to BOE

Keys Fillauer is seeking to be re-elected to the Oak Ridge Board of Education.

Fillauer has served on the school board for 15 years and has served as chair for the last four years. He also serves as East director for the Tennessee School Board Association Board of Directors.

Fillauer is a retired Oak Ridge teacher and coach. He taught and coached at Robertsville Junior High for 27 years and at Oak Ridge High School for four years, a press release said. Fillauer has been recognized as a member of the All Tennessee School Board, Tennessee Teacher of the Year, and Freedom Foundation Award winner, and he received the Governor’s Outstanding Tennessean Award.

Fillauer has also received the Service Above Self award from the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary Club, the press release said. He is a member of the Oak Ridge Sports Hall of Fame and the Anderson County Hall of Fame.

Fillauer serves as president of a property management business in Cleveland, Tennessee. He is involved in many fundraising efforts, especially for the Ronald McDonald House, the press release said. [Read more…]

The budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1 will be presented to the Oak Ridge Board of Education at 5:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, May 10).

The school board will have a work session to discuss the Fiscal Year 2017 budget at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 12, and a work session to review the budget line by line at 5:30 p.m. Monday, May 16.

Then, the BOE will consider the budget in the first of two readings at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 18. That meeting will include a public hearing. [Read more…]

Anderson County Board of Education Chair John Burrell announced at last week’s school board meeting that he has appointed a search committee to find the next director of schools. The next director will replace Larry Foster, who is retiring at the end of June.

The board voted unanimously to approve the makeup of the committee, which will be chaired by Gail Martin, who is also the committee’s representative for Claxton. Curtis Sexton will represent Rocky Top, while Glenda Langenberg will represent Oak Ridge. Jim Stewart will represent Clinton, Dail Cantrell will represent Andersonville/Norris, and Robert McKamey will serve as the representative for the Anderson County Commission, Dutch Valley, and Norwood. School board extends superintendent’s contract to 2020

The Oak Ridge Board of Education on Monday unanimously extended the contract of Superintendent Bruce Borchers by one year to 2020.

The extended contract, which was approved 5-0, will take effect June 18, 2016, and continue through June 17, 2020.

The board can have a maximum of a four-year contract with Borchers, BOE Chair Keys Fillauer said.

Board member Angi Agle said she would have added more than a year to Borchers’ contract if she could. [Read more…]

School Board endorses recommendation for preschool at Elm Grove

The Oak Ridge Board of Education on Monday endorsed a recommendation to build a new preschool at Elm Grove Park. A new preschool has been on the city’s wish list for years, but this particular proposal is still in the early stages.

The school board received a report from the Joint City/Schools Preschool Planning Committee on Monday and endorsed the committee’s report in a 4-0 vote. The recommendation will now be considered by the city.

There was once a school at Elm Grove Park in east Oak Ridge, and the committee’s report, presented to City Council and the BOE in a work session in October, recommended using that city-owned site, officials said.

“We think that after the factors we discussed, it was the most appropriate site,” Oak Ridge Schools Superintendent Bruce Borchers said. [Read more…]

School Board retreat: Preschool, superintendent evaluation, Access Oak Ridge

The Oak Ridge Board of Education has a retreat on Friday. Among the agenda items are a superintendent evaluation and a preschool update.

The retreat is from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, October 30, in the School Administration Building conference room.

Other agenda items include Access Oak Ridge, Oak Ridge 2020, communications plan and Web page, capital projects, and a legal update.

School board to consider buying $1.36M worth of 1:1 computing devices

The Oak Ridge Board of Education on Monday will consider buying $1.36 million worth of “one to one” computing devices for middle school students and teachers.

The purchase of the 1,636 devices would be through a $1.59 million, four-year CalFirst equipment lease that the school board will also consider on Monday.

The BOE will consider buying 1,520 student devices worth $1,223,600 from Personal Computer Systems, or PCS, in Louisville, Tennessee. The Lenovo 11E Yoga convertible laptops are worth $805 each and would be used by students in grades 5-8.

Teachers in grades 5-8 would get 116 devices worth $135,140 from PCS. Those devices, worth $1,165 each, would be Lenovo Yoga 12s. [Read more…]
