Oak Ridge Rowing hires head coach for Atomic Rowing programs

Shannon Moore has been hired as the head coach for Oak Ridge’s Atomic Rowing programs, the Oak Ridge Rowing Association said Saturday.

Moore will direct the developmental and competitive programs for junior novices, men’s and women’s varsity, and adult rowing programs, the ORRA said in a press release.

Moore was a decorated rower for Ohio State University, was a member of the US Rowing National Team, and medaled in both the women’s 4+ and women’s 8+ races in the USRowing National Championships during her amateur rowing career, the press release said.

It said Moore has 17 years of coaching experience, including international, collegiate, and competitive club and high school programs. [Read more…]

ORAU announces recipients of 2015 Pollard Scholarships

Oak Ridge Associated Universities has awarded five William G. Pollard Scholarships of $2,500 each toward undergraduate studies for the 2015-2016 academic year. The recipients of this year’s scholarships are Cory Anderson, Rachel Baxter, Christopher Friend, Bailey Kitts, and Caroline Thomas.

Each year, ORAU awards these scholarships to employees’ children who display exceptional achievements in their high school or undergraduate studies. Applicants must submit official transcripts from all high schools and colleges attended, three references (at least two of which must be from teachers), and a 500-word essay describing the student’s professional and personal interests.

Sudarsanam Suresh Babu

Sudarsanam Suresh Babu, an authority in the production, design, and performance of transforming materials into parts, has been named the 11th University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor’s Chair.

Babu will serve as Governor’s Chair for Advanced Manufacturing. He begins on July 1.

Babu, a professor in the Welding Engineering Program in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at The Ohio State University, directed a National Science Foundation Industry and University Cooperative Research center focused on materials joining for energy applications. [Read more…]
