Super Hero Family Fun Day with filmmaker Brett Culp to benefit ADFAC on Saturday

“Superman moments…” that’s what filmmaker Brett Culp calls those times when we’re inspired to overcome challenges or do something more for our neighbors. “Look to the Sky” tells the true and uplifting story of young people from around the country who are making a real difference and inspiring hope for us all.

A charity screening of this film will be the culmination of a fun, family friendly super hero day to be held Saturday, October 28, from 11 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Grove Theater in Oak Ridge. “Look to the Sky” will be shown in the Grove Theater beginning at 1:30 p.m., with all proceeds going to Aid to Distressed Families of Appalachian Counties, or ADFAC. ADFAC has a heroic 30-year history of serving under-resourced families in our community, bringing hope and light wherever they go.

Culp will be making an appearance and joining us for this community event. As stated on Culp’s website, “Culp is the personal cinematographer for Hollywood stars, music icons, hall of fame athletes, and royal families.” [Read more…]

Barbershop Harmony Society presents ‘I’m Going South’ at Grove Theater in September

A show in Oak Ridge in September will feature the Southern Harmony Brigade chorus and other singers.

The show is titled “I’m Goin’ South,” and it will be presented by the Greater Knoxville Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society.

The show is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Saturday, September 9, in the Historic Grove Theater in Oak Ridge.

The show was announced by the Smokyland Sound Barbershop Harmony Chapter.

An Evening Out to benefit Child Advocacy Center of Anderson County

Some of East Tennessee’s most exciting performing artists will share one stage in Oak Ridge in a concert to raise funds for the Child Advocacy Center of Anderson County, or CACAC, a press release said.

The event attracts a cadre of talented singers, songwriters, dancers, and performers from the area, the press release said. This year, it’s scheduled to start at 6 p.m. Friday, April 28, at the Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road in Grove Center.

Two of the area’s most talented performers will be highlighting the evening, the press release said. Kelle Jolly, “The Tennessee Ukulele Lady,” is one of East Tennessee’s most celebrated jazz musicians and a WUOT personality, the release said. Dominick White, a baritone with the Marble City Opera Company, will share his talent in the evening of fun.

Other singers, plus dance ensembles, will be performing including tango, lindy hop, and Greg Carney’s hip-hop. The emcee of the evening will be Zach Farrar who will also be handling the live auction.

“This event makes a difference in the lives of children,” said Sally Avery, president of the CACAC Board of Directors. “An evening of entertainment while supporting the kids, it is the event to be at this year!” [Read more…]

“The Pink House: A Tale of Two Faces” will be presented on Saturday, March 11, at 7:30 p.m. at the Grove Theater.

This traveling, semi-animated variety show hosts eminent local musicians in an ongoing epic about an artist and his various misadventures, a press release said.

The show is illustrated by Desmond Darko of Oak Ridge. It is voice-acted by Darko, Courtney Harvey, and Austin Puckett.

The Oak Ridge High School Fusion Orchestra performed on the “Blue Plate Special” radio show on WDVX FM 89.9 on Friday. Here are photos from the show.

The groundbreaking fusion orchestra is now in its second year at ORHS, and it is the brainchild of ORHS Orchestra Director Doug Phillips, a press release said. According to Phillips, the class is a result of his doctoral studies during the past seven years at one of the top music universities in the world: Boston University.

“The class is a unique way to teach orchestra students for several reasons,” Phillips said. “First, in a traditional orchestra, all of the students are guided by notes on a paper that tell them exactly what to do and when to do it, how loud to play it, when to stop, etc., while the teacher acts as an overseer and dictates of all activities. The Wednesday meeting of ORION, an amateur science and astronomy club based in Oak Ridge, will feature Bogdan Vacaliuc of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and a discussion of citizen science and radio astronomy.

The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 16, at the historic Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road in Oak Ridge.

ORION was founded in April 1974 by a group of scientists at the United States Department of Energy facility in Oak Ridge. Its purpose is to promote learning and inquiry throughout the cities of Oak Ridge and Knoxville, and the counties of Anderson, Knox, and Roane, a press release said.

A free community Thanksgiving Dinner will be hosted at High Places Community Church/Grove Theater on Thursday, November 24.

The dinner is hosted again by a grassroots group of individuals, a press release said. The dinner is scheduled from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Thursday, November 24, at High Places, which is at 123 Randolph Road.

An assistant professor of environmental geology at the University of Tennessee will talk about chemical oceanography in Oak Ridge on Wednesday.

The title of the presentation by Drew Steen, of the UT Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, is “Heterotrophic Organisms in the Deep Marine Sediments” or “What to Do When You’re Hungry but You’re 100,000 Years Late for Dinner.”
