Dolores “Dee” M. Young

Dolores “Dee” M. Young, age 90, of Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at her home.

Dee was born April 14, 1923, in Indianola, Penn., to the late Steven and Esther Matalay. She graduated from high school in Hickory, Penn., and moved to Oak Ridge in 1945 and was employed at K-25 and was married to Joe Young June 28, 1946, in a ceremony held at Chapel on the Hill. Dee attended the University of Tennessee, was president of Toastmasters Club, president of Aglow Christian Women’s Organization, and later president of The Oak Ridge Christian Women’s Club. For more than two decades, she was the owner/operator of her home/boardinghouse for the professionals, students, and doctors who came to Oak Ridge to work for ORAU and ORNL. Dee was active in Heritage Church for more than 25 years, and in later years she attended the Oak Ridge Alliance Church. Her special interests were politics and above all, mentoring the many people who called her for her prayers and nurturing sprit. [Read more…]

Wallace Russell Gambill

Wallace Russell Gambill, born Feb. 28, 1931, died on Jan. 25, 2014.

Raised in and near Chattanooga by his parents, Alton L. and Ethel R. Gambill, Wally is survived by his wife, Bobbie Jean Ward of Clinton; his ex-wife, Patricia Miller of Chattanooga; his sister, Susan G. Sammons of Atlanta; his two daughters, Linda Voychehovski of Chattanooga and Eve Friedli of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; and his granddaughter, Sophia Voychehovski of Atlanta.

Wally graduated with honors from the McCallie School in Chattanooga in 1948, and also with honors from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta in 1952, with a B.S. degree in chemical engineering. He was initially employed as a design engineer by Union Carbide in Charleston, W.V., where he worked with C.H. (Charlie) Gilmour, a well-known heat transfer specialist of the time.

After moving with his family to Oak Ridge, Tennessee in 1956, Wally began a 34-year career as a research engineer with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. [Read more…]

Caitlyn Aileen Jordan

Caitlyn Aileen Jordan, age 21, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2014, in her mother’s arms. Caitlyn was born in Knoxville on Sept. 25, 1992. Caitlyn entered this world a fighter, much like how she left it.

Caitlyn attended Oak Ridge High School and was very involved with Special Olympics. She enjoyed time with her family, swimming, bowling, attending Camp Koinonia, and listening to her favorite singer, Reba McEntire. In 2006, Make-A-Wish Foundation sent Caitlyn, her brother, and her parents to Disney World, where Caitlyn enjoyed meeting Minnie Mouse and riding the rollercoasters. Caitlyn’s sky blue eyes and sparkling smile lit up every room she entered. Caitlyn was truly a joy to every person who knew and loved her. [Read more…]

Romance F. Carrier, formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2014, at the Jefferson City Health and Rehab in Jefferson City.

Romance was born July 26, 1935, in Wheeling, W.V., to the late George and Mildred Lorentz Frederichs. She attended the University of Michigan and received her master’s degree from the University of Tennessee. Romance met the love of her life William L. Carrier at the University of Tennessee and they were married May 16, 1958. They moved to Oak Ridge, and she was employed with Union Carbide and retired from Martin Marietta in 1998, where she was employed as an information analyst. Romance and William enjoyed traveling with trips to Japan, Moscow, Italy, Puerto Rico, Canada, and many states here in the United States. Romance was a member of First United Methodist Church and enjoyed painting and took many art classes after her retirement. She loved to read and spent time volunteering at Recording for the Blind here in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

Colton Alexander Stout

Colton Alexander Stout, age 20, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Colton was born July 30, 1993, in Oak Ridge, the son of Monroe Stout Jr. and Tracy Lynn Powers Stout. He was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School.

Colton was employed with the Campbell County EMS as an emergency medical technician. He had worked as a volunteer at the Marlow Volunteer Fire Department and as a substitute teacher with the Anderson County School System. He was a member of the Anderson County Rescue Squad. Colton enjoyed riding his motorcycle and ATVs and the great outdoors. He particularly enjoyed being with his family and friends and playing video games.

William S. Lenihan Jr.

William S. Lenihan Jr., age 91, of Oak Ridge, died peacefully on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014.

He was born in 1922 in Boston, Mass. Mr. Lenihan attended Boston Latin High School and Tufts University prior to World War II. He was one of the original engineers working on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University at the very inception of the project.

He came to Oak Ridge in 1943 as a young engineer and helped design and build the massive K-25 Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He married his fiancée, Christine, in 1946.

In the late ’50s, he was transferred by Union Carbide to Ohio facilities. In Cleveland, he worked on fuel cell technology for the Apollo and Gemini NASA projects developing several metal patents.

In 1968, Union Carbide transferred Bill and his family back to Oak Ridge where four of his five children graduated. Chris also taught for many years at Oak Ridge High School. He received a M.S. in Finance from the University of Tennessee and became an analyst for the Plans Division of Union Carbide in the early ’70s. He retired in 1995. Mr. Lenihan was a longtime member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, where he was a leader of the Knights of Columbus and served in many volunteer capacities. [Read more…]

Mildred Audrey Scruggs

Mildred Audrey Scruggs, a loving mother and grandmother and a kind and gentle person to all, passed away Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Methodist Medical Center.

She was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Bose Mountain (Lycoming County) Penn., the daughter of LeRoy A. and Ceba Ann West Null.

Mrs. Scruggs was a member of the Oliver Springs Church of Christ. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, and oil painting. She was also an avid collector of owls.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Clifton Scruggs, and infant daughter, Barbara Ann Scruggs, as well as seven sisters and three brothers. [Read more…]

Leo was a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed fishing. Dick loved his dogs, and telling stories about his younger days.

Rev. John Lewis Rhoads Sr.

Rev. John Lewis Rhoads Sr., age 86, of Kingston, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2014, at his home.

He was born Dec. 23, 1927, in St. Albans, W.V., the son of George Lucien Rhoads and Margaret Volmer Rhoads.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Coast Guard.

Rev. Rhoads was a minister with the Holston United Methodist Conference for 40 years, serving many churches during his service to the church. He enjoyed traveling and writing poetry. [Read more…]

Charles Frederick Baes Jr.

Charlie Baes—beloved husband, father, and friend—passed away in his sleep on Sunday, Jan. 26, 2014, at his home in Oak Ridge.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1924, in Cleveland, Ohio, to Charles Frederick Baes and Edna Irene Ridenour.

He married his sweetheart, Julia Rodriguez, on Jan. 9, 1948, in Los Angeles, Calif. They spent 57 wonderful years together in marriage and raised three children. Their tender and deep affection for each other lasted until Julia’s passing in 2005.

Charlie demonstrated through his actions that his love for family was of supreme importance in his life. Together, Charlie and Julia created lasting memories taking family vacations and traveling to Honduras, where Julia was from. [Read more…]
