Obituary: Roger Lee Hinkle

Roger Lee Hinkle, age 59, a resident of the Frost Bottom Community in Anderson County, passed away Thursday, Feb. 6, 2014, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Roger was born on Feb. 22, 1954, in the New River section of Campbell County. He grew up and lived in New River until his move to Atlanta, Ga. He later moved to Dalton, Ga., and began his employment in the carpet manufacturing industry. He was employed as a supervisor at Cornet Carpet Mill of Dalton until his retirement in 1997. Following his retirement, he and his family moved back home to Tennessee.

He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with them and especially a grandson, Roger Andrew Richard.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Maxine Hinkle Phillips and by a son-in-law, Daryl Richard. [Read more…]

Marjorie McMaster Quinn

Marjorie “Marge” McMaster Quinn of Oak Ridge died on Feb. 3, 2014.

Mrs Quinn was born July 25, 1923, in Oak Park, Ill., to parents Lois Woodcock and Robert McMaster. She graduated from Oak Park/River Forest Township High School and attended MacMurry College for women in Jacksonville, Ill., for two years. She then worked for the F.B.I. in Chicago from 1943 to 1947. It was here that she met her future husband, Henry A. Quinn. They married in September 1947 and moved to Oak Ridge, where he was senior resident agent out of the F.B.I. Knoxville division.

Mrs. Quinn was an active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church since 1967, where for more than 20 years she was the newsletter editor, sang in the choir, and volunteered in the woman’s organization serving in several capacities.

She was chaplain of the local NARFE chapter when it was first organized, was active in the Oak Ridge Woman’s Club, and was on the organizing committee of the Oak Ridge Christian Woman’s Club. [Read more…]

Hilda Telitha Allen Jenner

Hilda Telitha Allen Jenner, age 88, of Oak Ridge, passed away Feb. 4, 2014, peacefully in her sleep at her home.

She was born in a coal mining camp called Cotula in Campbell County on Sept. 19, 1925, to parents Lucy Retha Dossett Allen and William McKinley Allen. Known as Telitha to her family and Hilda to her friends, she graduated high school as the salutatorian of her class in Jacksboro before attending business school in Knoxville.

She came to Oak Ridge in the early 1940s and worked as a secretary during the Manhattan Project while living in Beacon Hall, one of the dormitories set up for women. It was while working in Oak Ridge that she met her husband of 63 years, Clyde V. Jenner, who preceded her in death. Hilda and Clyde enjoyed square dancing in the early years in Oak Ridge and were members of the ’43 Club later in life.

She was active with her daughters in both Girl Scouts and Camp Fire Girls when they were young. Hilda was a past president and officer of the Oak Ridge Women’s Club, where she remained an active member and committee chair. She was also an avid bridge player and could typically be found playing bridge at the Oak Ridge Senior Center on a weekly basis. [Read more…]

Deborah Faye Hoskins Sutton Lane Hull left us on Feb. 2. She was born on Feb. 18, 1932, in Bowens Creek, Ky.

She was a waitress, bar tender, mom maker, a wife and a mother to all. She was known as “Momma Faye.”

She will be dearly missed by all she touched in life. She is proceeded in death by her parents Allie Mae and James Hoskins, first husband Carl Sutton to cancer in 1954, second husband Ernest Lane, daughter Doris Sutton, sons David Sutton and Donald Lane, all of which were killed by a drunk driver in 1964, sister Wanda Young, and her third husband Ronald King Hull to cancer on Oct. 4 2013. Corene Ward Cottrell, age 77, of Powell, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2014, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

She was born Feb. 28, 1936, in Harriman, the daughter of Earnest and Arvina Curtain Ward.

Mrs. Cottrell was a member of New Salem Baptist Church in Clinton.

She enjoyed gardening and fishing. She was an avid crafter, enjoying many mediums, especially crocheting and making hand-made teddy bears. She was also an accomplished seamstress and tailor-made clothes for others. [Read more…]

Wanda Bowman Hagood, age 89, formerly of Oak Ridge, and a resident of The Bridge of Rockwood, died Monday, Feb. 3, 2014, at Roane Medical Center.

She was born July 25, 1924, in Persia, Tenn., the daughter of David W. and Leona Orr Bowman.

Jesse “J. W.” William Webb, age 74, of Oak Ridge, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2014, at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center.

He was born June 5, 1939, in Ware Shoals, S.C., the son of Jesse Robinson Webb and Lula Mae Turner Webb.

Mr. Webb retired from Sears, where he was a sales associate. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church of Oak Ridge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Webb, and sister, Hazel Crossno. [Read more…]

Bobby Lavurne Tichenor, age 75, of Knoxville, passed away Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at Park West Medical Center.

He was born July 29, 1938, in Lebanon, Va., the son of Melton L. and Nell McCloud Tichenor. Mr. Tichenor served with the U.S. Army and retired after 36 years of service in the Army Reserve and the National Guard.

He retired from Lockheed Martin Energy Systems, where he worked at the Y-12 plant. He was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church as well as the Loyal Order of Moose #1316 and the Fraternal Order of Eagles #2514.

Mr. Tichenor loved camping, hiking and RV-ing. He was an avid UT football fan, attending all the home games. He was known for his cooking while tailgating. [Read more…]

Donna Penland Richardson of Harriman went to be with the Lord suddenly on Sunday, Feb. 2, 2014, at the Roane County Medical Center.

She was born Feb. 5, 1955, in Oak Ridge to Jackie and Edwin Penland. Donna was a graduate of Oak Ridge High School and Middle Tennessee State University with a degree in business administration and office management. She was a professional certified secretary and was employed with Oak Ridge National Laboratory until taking a medical retirement due to MS. Donna loved and participated in western square dancing, reading, working puzzles, computer games, playing cards, and was an avid University of North Carolina Tar Heel sports follower. [Read more…]
