County denies payment to attorney detained taking pictures near Clinton Middle

CLINTON—With no discussion Monday, the Anderson County Commission denied a payment request from a local attorney who had allegedly demanded money before filing a lawsuit over an incident last fall where he was detained while taking pictures near Clinton Middle School.

Clinton attorney Phil Harber said he was photographing school buses that were parked on Marshall Street in Clinton on Oct. 10 when he was detained. The buses allegedly block the route to his home, and he was reportedly planning to use the pictures in a lawsuit against the city, Anderson County Sheriff’s Department Deputy William S. B&W Y-12 recently signed agreements with two new protégés—BES Technologies and The Molecular Group. The companies join eight other groups currently involved in Y-12’s Mentor-Protégé program.

U.S. Rep. Diane Black, a Republican from Tennessee’s 6th District, visited Oak Ridge National Laboratory Monday afternoon.

Black received an overview of the lab’s research and development activities and toured the Oak Ridge Leadership Computing Facility, the EVEREST Visualization Lab, the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors facility, the Spallation Neutron Source, and the Carbon Fiber Technology Facility.

Beer Board approves short September suspension for Back 2 Brewski’s

The Oak Ridge Beer Permit Board approved a suspension of up to two weeks for a Grove Center bar that was the scene of an April 14 fight involving two men, including one who police said was very intoxicated.

But the beer permit suspension, scheduled to start Sept. 1, could be shortened to one week if Back 2 Brewski’s meets a few requirements, including proving that employees who need training on responsibly serving alcohol complete a course by Aug. 30. [Read more…]

Three taken to hospital after two-car crash on Oak Ridge Turnpike

Three people were taken to the hospital after a two-car collision on Friday morning in east Oak Ridge.

An Oak Ridge Police Department crash report said Edgar L. Cagley, 77, of Kingston tried to turn left from Elza Drive onto Oak Ridge Turnpike in a Hyundai sedan at about 11:09 a.m. Friday, but he did not yield to an eastbound Cadillac sedan driven by Margaret Burnett Martin, 84, of Oak Ridge. Cagley drove into Martin’s path, causing the collision, the report said. [Read more…]

Anderson County Fair starts Monday night

The Anderson County Fair officially kicks off this evening and will run through Saturday on the Fairgrounds in Clinton. Gates open at 5 p.m. today, and children ages 17 and under will get in for free.

In addition, if you can find Kubota of Knoxville owner Ron Krise at the Fair, he has purchased 100 armbands that will allow kids to ride the rides on the midway all night long. The midway opens at 6 p.m. and those armbands will be $20. [Read more…]

Three residents escaped but two cats died in a Monday morning fire in a den and kitchen at a home on West Geneva Lane.

The fire was reported at about 6:36 a.m. at 110 W. Geneva Lane.

The homeowner, Debora Boody, said her mother smelled smoke when she got up to shower in the morning. After she was awakened, Debora Boody went to the den and said it looked black inside, so she opened the den doors and smoke immediately filled the kitchen, an Oak Ridge Fire Department report said. CLINTON—The Anderson County Commission on Monday was unable to resolve a dispute between the county mayor and the sheriff over an annual salary agreement, meaning a judge could be asked to intervene.

Anderson County Mayor Terry Frank has refused to sign the proposed salary agreement for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department. She said it includes about $7.66 million for salaries, which is roughly $1 million more than the $6.63 million approved by commission in June as part of this year’s budget.

“I cannot do anything more than what was passed,” Frank told commissioners Monday morning. “The only way I can sign that is if you go ahead and approve that new $1 million.” [Read more…]

A Y-12 nuclear nonproliferation technology offering significant possibilities in the homeland security field was among those listed on the R&D Magazine 51st Annual R&D 100 Awards. The honor salutes the 100 most technologically significant products introduced into the marketplace during the past year.

The LISeTM, a high-efficiency thermal neutron detector based on the 6LiInSe2 crystal, is the first large, single-crystal semiconductor of high resistivity that contains lithium and directly detects thermal neutrons with high efficiency. The single-crystalline device will be used in handheld nuclear nonproliferation and homeland security applications to find fissile materials. Its simpler, more compact design, and higher efficiency are key improvements that will appeal to users. [Read more…]

Small bedroom fire extinguished on Hamilton Circle

A small fire around an electrical outlet in a bedroom on a multifamily home on Hamilton Circle was extinguished before firefighters arrived Tuesday afternoon, authorities said.

Firefighters found light smoke and evidence of burning when they arrived at 102 Hamilton Circle at about 3 p.m. Tuesday, but they said the fire had not spread. [Read more…]

A Monday morning legislative forum in Clinton will feature Sen. Randy McNally and representatives John Ragan and Dennis Powers. They will update constituents and answer questions about recent legislation, a press release said.

The forum is sponsored by the Anderson County Chamber of Commerce, and it is open to the public. It is scheduled from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Clinton Community Center at 101 S. Hicks St. in Clinton.

Tickets are now on sale for M*A*S*H Bash 2013, Oak Ridge’s one-of-a-kind fundraiser for the Free Medical Clinic of Oak Ridge.

The fun-filled event, fashioned after the M*A*S*H television series, is set for Saturday, Aug. 10, in the Parish Life Center of St. Mary’s Church.
